Child and adolescent obesity has become a major public health problem around the world. Pediatric obesity arises when factors including preconception and prenatal exposures, as well as broader changes in the food and physical activity environments, disturb regulatory processes.
Globally, at least 39 million children < 5 years and 150 million children aged 5-19 years are overweight or obese. The World Obesity Federation has estimated that 206 million children and adolescents aged 5-19 years will be living with obesity by 2025, and that number will grow to 254 million in 2030.
Children and adolescents with obesity are more likely to have obesity in adulthood than those without obesity. Obesity in childhood has a strong association with adult mortality and morbidity, according to the Childhood Obesity Task Force and the European Association for the Study of Obesity. And the longer the child has obesity, the greater the risk of developing related comorbidities over time.
