What about if we will set it to false for libraries (i.e. when output.library is set) by default and true for application, I think it will work, and also we have the option to control it

How about putting it under * module.generator.javascript.anonymousDefaultExportName*? The optimization option is more intended for improving JS bundle output, but this option seems more about spec alignment. |
Add a new `optimization.anonymousDefaultExportName` option (default: false) that controls whether webpack emits code to set `.name = "default"` on anonymous default export functions and classes per ES spec. Previously this behavior was unconditionally enabled (since 5.106.0), adding ~140 bytes of unmangleable code per anonymous default export. Library authors and most applications don't need this spec compliance fix-up, so it is now opt-in. Closes #20822
Move the option from optimization to module.generator.javascript as it is about spec alignment in code generation rather than bundle optimization. Default to true for applications and false for libraries (when output.library is set).

Here is a problem, if you have "javascript/auto" and set anonymousDefaultExportName, it will not work, ideally we need to pass this option to HarmonyExportExpressionDependency from parser option and use it here
Move the option from module.generator.javascript to module.parser.javascript per review feedback. Reading it in HarmonyExportDependencyParserPlugin ensures the merged parser options for the correct module subtype (javascript/auto, javascript/esm, etc.) are used, instead of reading the global generator config which misses subtype-specific overrides.

…tName (#8242) Webpack 5.107 introduces a new JS parser option that controls whether webpack sets .name to "default" on anonymous default-export functions and classes (per the ES spec). The fix-up was added in 5.106 but the extra Object.defineProperty calls inflate bundles, so the option defaults to true for applications and false for libraries (when output.library is set). The .name fix-up for anonymous default exports (introduced in 5.106.0) is unfriendly to ES library bundling — it injects unmangleable Object.defineProperty calls that inflate output size, while library consumers never rely on .name === "default". Changing the default to true in a minor release could also be a breaking change for ES libraries. Therefore optimization.anonymousDefaultExportName now defaults to false, and we plan to revisit defaulting it to true in webpack 6 for full ES spec compliance.
