Still not doing great and need a lot of help but have no ability to even sort that out. Ope!

But hey, I'm on the concom I guess you could say for a convention this weekend and that's been a pleasant distraction thought now I'm in the frantic "OMG I have so much to do and so little time to do it" phase of con prep.

Contingency Con is a small free online Person of Interest con that will take place almost entirely on Discord. Should be fun.

I put together two vid shows for it and will be playing one at 10 a.m. and 8 p.m. on Friday and the second one at 10 a.m. and 8 p.m. on Saturday. (Streaming on Watch2Gether, chatting in a text channel on Discord.)

"Beginnings . . . " features early POI vids mostly made while seasons one and two were airing (with a couple from season 3).

"Harold, God, Root, and the Machine" features vids about . . . those people/entities I guess you could say though the "God" section isn't so much about God as it is the songs used for vids mention God ("God's Gonna Cut You Down" and "Take Me To Church" and so on).

Both are just under an hour long (I aimed for 50 minutes and things were going well but then hey, someone submitted a premiere! And there were other developments like that.

I nattered more on my other fannish pseud account on here which I should try to remember to use.

I'm still writing and posting fanfic, my AO3 stats have me at almost a million words. Yikes. At least a couple people love my writing so that's gratifying. I just see how much I have to learn but I'm having fun with it.

A year ago around now or a bit earlier or later Kevin was probably telling me he was going to take a nap. I was distracted and hyperfocused on projects all day. I probably should've checked on him sooner when he didn't come upstairs to make supper.

I thought about waking him up to show him a graphic I worked on. God I posted a ton on November 11, 2024 I was posting thread after thread on Bluesky about things. (sigh.)

if i make it through this day i will have made it a year without him and that seems fake and like it should not be a thing.

It's an important weekend to call your members of congress about Medicaid (could call on Monday as well). (My healthcare is all paid for by Medical Assistance here in MN which is Medicaid; each state tends to have their own name for it, which adds to some confusion.)

This post has some good info and scripts.

Thanks to everyone making the calls. <3

I still think the May the Fourth Star Wars thing is kind of silly, but sure-- there are weirder things or ways to celebrate stuff.

Back in 2022, I quite spontaneously threw together a YouTube playlist of some of my favorite Star Wars fanvids. And then I did it again in 2023. No repeats between those two 90 minute playlists. My dad died two days after May the Fourth 2023 and the following year was rough, but I did put together a shorter hour long playlist with a theme ("Be Ready & Be Brave") for 2024 about rebellion and resistance and whatnot; I did repeat some vids on that playlist.

The past year has been even harder on quite a few fronts.

. . . that some people first noticed a baseball player lob a summer sausage at another baseball player in celebration. And for some reason I later tried to document this nonsense in a whole series of posts . . .

Happy More Joy Day!

In case you aren't familiar with it: SDWolfpup's More Joy Day posts here on Dreamwidth and the More Joy Day Fanlore entry. Basically it's a day where some folks make an effort to spread a little joy. We could all stand to have more of that, right now. Here's today's post where people will be sharing what they're doing for More Joy Day 2025.

I made a fanvid playlist for More Joy Day last year and I've done it again this year. Before I get to this year's playlist (and accompanying watch parties), let me tell you about it and what this all means to me (you can, of course, skip my rambling and jump to the details on the watch parties and playlist).

In which I talk about joy (and grief) and fanvids and vid shows/playlists. )

And now, without further ado (good lord there was a lot of ado), my fanvid playlist for More Joy Day 2025 . . .

I need to be reminded that some good has come out of my existence or might again.

I never got up the courage to ask people to post nice memories or comments or whatever about me for my 50th birthday (or Kevin for his 60th) but right now I really need to be reminded I've mattered at all to anyone and that maybe I still have things to offer this world.

Grim way of explaining things, but here we are.

Comment here with memories or nice things or whatever I guess. Say those nice things you might say if I'd died because I feel like I have died. (Or write to me privately if you prefer.)

If you don't have an account on Dreamwidth, you should be able to post anonymously or with OpenID (there should be a "reply" link at the bottom right of this post) though you can sign it in the body of your message unless you really do want to be anonymous.

Reminder there is such a page already for Kevin over here-- hearing people say nice things about him actually probably means more to me right now but I also really need to hear things about me I just hate asking.

Holiday Tunes and Yule Logs and such . . .

Last year's holiday mix and a bunch of other older Christmas mixes are up on both Spotify & YouTube in case you're interested. Pretty good selection of mostly Christmas tracks if I do say so myself. (Some tracks are missing from each, though often they are different ones.)

YouTube:

Spotify:

Jon Solomon's 25 Hour Holiday Marathon starts in about 90 minutes as I type this and I enjoy it:

The Current plays a good array of tunes on both their regular station (today and tomorrow) and on their holiday stream.

Locally the Yule Log is back on 45 again this year (it returned last year after a hiatus):

And there are many Yule Logs on YouTube. I have an unlisted playlist of over 400 Yule Log or Yule Log adjacent videos and you're welcome to poke through it. It's not organized and I've not vetted them so quality varies and some may be offensive. I have a thread on Bluesky where I'm sharing some of the better or more interesting ones.

Would love to hear any good stories or memories people have about my most excellent husband Kevin G. Austin. Can leave comments here or email me at lakrahn@protonmail.com or send pictures there too for that matter.

I've made this post public and am even allowing anonymous comments though if you do post anonymously, you can say who you are in the body of the comment (if you like).

It's that time yet again when Amazon has a bunch of dales. (Yes, I know Amazon is problematic AF. But if you do shop there, I very much appreciate it when you use my links as I get a cut of what you spend.)

There are a bunch of "buy 3 for the price of 2" deals and "buy 2" deals that can make these deals even more affordable. And I'm also seeing quite a few coupons (you just have to select the checkbox next to them).

If you want to check if something is a legit deal, I recommend using CamelCamelCamel (which is also great for price watching).

Here's a link to my post about a previous sale since I expect many of the same deals may repeat you may want to check that page for more deals (some won't be deals again, but some. might).

Will probably add more deals every so often.

Mostly focused on movies & TV on 4K Blu-Ray, Blu-Ray, and DVD. With some additional deals as I run across them.

I'm a big fan of physical media for a lot of reasons and with these deals you can sometimes get both physical media and digital/streaming copies for the same price or sometimes even less than purchasing or renting for streaming.

Auction post now has links to the individual items as well as lot titles.

https://laurel.dreamwidth.org/2325209.html

Auction ends on Wednesday the 25th of September. As with the previous auctions, most items need to be picked up in Medina/Hamel, MN. Some are listed as available to be shipped; if you really want something shipped that isn't listed as shippable, you can ask them and see if they can do it.

The Minnesota Twins baseball team has been struggling a lot lately— part of it is because multiple key players have been out with injuries. Not much can be done about that. But it has been frustrating to watch.

I was puttering around on BlueSky when a mutual from there (& Twitter) got my attention with a post letting me know that the rally sausage had returned! (I had not turned on the game so had missed this big news.)

Sure enough, the Twins brought back the summer sausage (or a summer sausage) and suddenly they were hitting homeruns and they actually scored 10 runs in the game (!!!). Amazing. (The summer sausage appears to be wrapped in multiple plastic bags which really has me wondering if they somehow have the original rally sausage, but maybe they’re just being overly careful with a new one. Who knows?) (I haven’t checked if beat reporters got to the bottom of this postgame yet.)

And I just realized this post will seem weird if you missed my previous posts on this subject or don’t follow baseball (and specifically Twins stuff). Ah well. I do not have it in me to track down links right now.

(Who am I kidding, this is weird even if you are familiar with the saga.)

There's a new zine that does a good job of explaining why wearing a mask is important:
"Why We Mask: It's Not Just a Cold" by Laurel Lynn Leake

And there's a slightly older zine that covers a bit more ground which is also great:
"What's Up With COVID and How To Protect Yourself 2024 Edition" by Hazel Newlevant

Both are well worth your time. Can read online or print them out to read and/or distribute. They cover all sorts of stuff I think of as common knowledge but which I've learned really very much are not. I like that they cover it in easy to read format, but have links to their info sources. Citations, yay!

The new updated SARS-CoV-2 vaccines for 2024-2025 have been approved and are readily available. Both CVS & Walgreens have appointments available as do other places I'm sure. St. Paul Corner Drug currently has a limited supply of the Moderna vaccine and will update the appointments section as they get the others in I'm sure (I recommend them if you want to get vaccinated outside or in your car or home, though they also have more safety precautions indoors than most).

The main thing you need to know is that you should get the updated vaccine! The sooner the better for most folks. If you want to hear me natter in much more detail, read on, but people need to not let worrying about details keep them from getting the new vaccines. They're very safe, they're all good. The most important thing is to get them. Vaccine finder. Not sure if this Novavax finder is still working, but then Novavax was approved more recently so may not be out there yet; previously Costco was a fairly reliable place to get it.

Measles & Whooping Cough outbreaks, what fun )

Back on August 26th, an estimated 1 in 19 Minnesotans were infectious with SARS-CoV-2. Good times. Things are not great! In the U.S. as of September 2nd there was more transmission in the U.S. than during 91.6% of the pandemic. Awesome. (That's per Pandemic Mitigation Collaborative's data models. Can read more on this from Mike Hoerger on Twitter but you have to brave Twitter (bleah). So grateful for their work.

There aren't many reliable ways to get data on the state of things with COVID-19, but wastewater is currently the best way. The Minnesota Wastewater Surveillance Study at the U of M is great. The CDC is (amazingly enough) still providing national wastewater surveillance data.

Data on deaths can be found on the CDC site, but given how little testing is done at hospitals and whatnot, the estimates are low. Even so, I bet you didn't know 100 Minnesotans had died of SARS-CoV-2 in the last three months. These are preventable deaths and I will continue to rage about that too.

Finally, a good black mask option! )

It is weird in 2024 to have a police drama as your favorite TV show of all time. I know it is. I wondered if I would rethink my ranking of the show, upon revisiting it. Maybe it wasn't as good as I remembered? Maybe in light of what I now know and think now about the police, I wouldn't like it as much.Read more... )

Homicide: Life on the Street, probably my favorite TV show of all time, is now streaming on Peacock. FINALLY. The show has never been on any streaming service and hasn't even aired on cable or anything like that in ages.
In which I natter about this a lot )

The Shout Factory complete series DVD set is still available while other older sets are out of print and harder to find. (I'm happy to loan out DVD sets, as I've said many times in the past.)

This latest auction is another one like that first auction of art & glassware where some items are from my folks’ estate and some are being auctioned for other folks.

Here’s the link: https://www.k-bid.com/auction/54650

By default you should see items sorted by “Closing Soonest” which should put them so lots are in order starting with lot 1 and continuing onward.

Some items in this auction belonged to my parents, some were actually mine or my brother’s. Some items were passed along to my folks by relatives or came to them after their deaths (the license plates were part of my Grandpa Olson’s collection, for instance). Most items can be shipped (winning bidders pay actual UPS shipping costs straight to UPS). Auction ends August 6th (by default pieces are to be picked up in Medina, MN on August 8th but as I said shipping is possible for most items).

Thanks again to everyone who is bidding on items & spreading the word about these auctions.

Here are the lot numbers I’m told are from my folks’ estate:

Joe Mauer

laurel: Picture of Laurel Krahn wearing navy & red buffalo plaid Twins baseball cap (Default)
I started a post about Joe Mauer going into the Baseball Hall of Fame last week, but it got long (shocking) and is not quite ready so instead I'll share a three and a half minute video which I love.

This was put together in time for when the vote results were announced for who would be going into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 2024. It was Joe's first year of eligibility and while many people thought he had a shot of making it into the HOF on the first try, lots of others thought it might take a couple of years (it's a strange process).

Joe did get in on the first try, which is amazing (I cried a lot over this). They played this video on MLB Network and it's a nice nutshell view of Joe's career & why he was a special player.

I'll write more about Joe Mauer later, I'm sure. Well, mostly I just need to refine what I wrote already.
