Super Smash Bros purists often turn off items in a smash duel, hoping to rely on their skills rather than the luck of the perfect item drop to demolish their opponents.
Fans of the series for generations, however, have left items on in order to use some of the most broken tools available to eviscerate their friends, little cousins and siblings. Below are some of the most broken Smash Bros items that have ever graced the game, along with which installment had the most broken version of that item.

The super scope from Super Smash Bros. Meleewas an interesting item in that it could be charged into a devastating shot or just spammed to lock multiple opponents in a line in front of the player.
While the damage output wasn't absurd, the long wait while players drained every single shot into a player in front of them has led to many rage-quits in Super Smash Bros. Melee, and the ability to essentially get a free 25 percent on three other opponents was just too tempting of an offer.

In the first Super Smash Bros. game, every player would immediately panic trying to rush to a Pokéball which dropped on the ground, as the Pokémon available in the first game, except for Goldeen, were so strong that it usually meant an instant KO if a player was able to use it.
A player could have a swarm of Beedrill take over the screen, Blastoise blasting opponents off the ledge or Starmie chase down an opponent and stun lock them for the player to then smash them with an attack. No air dodging also meant players had limited options for what to do in these scenarios.
8 Ray Gun - Super Smash Bros.
Long Distance Lockdown
In the first Smash Bros. game, the ray gun was more powerful than its current iteration. It stunned opponents, reached all the way across the stage and did 10 percent per shot. With 16 shots available, well-timed snipers could just add 160 percent damage to one opponent while potentially launching them off the stage at the same time.
The sound it made while shooting matched the powerhouse this weapon was, and after all this damage, players could still toss the item and straight up KO an opponent they just lasered to oblivion.

The Gust Bellows, when held by the right player, is one of the most devastating items in all of Smash history. The item allows players to use the amount of ammunition this bag of wind contains, which can lead to multiple KOs for the player, as any opponent near the end of a stage can be pushed off with no chance of recovery.
Smart players can also retain the item after KOing an opponent and use it again at the right time despite health percentages to push them off the stage again, making this one of the most memorably frustrating items to face and continue to face in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.
6 Deku Nut — Super Smash Bros. 4
Stuns Before Guns
Unleash your inner Sheikah by using the Deku Nut item on opponents. This powerful item essentially makes it like a player has broken another player’s shield, stunning them hard enough to create whatever scenario the player needs to net a KO or, at the very least, land the hardest smash attack possible.
In the air, this item will not stun an opponent, but instead net a large percent of damage and has a high knockback, potentially KOing them outright. Smart players can hold onto the item for the right moment to strike, and when they are able to stun, can charge up a crazy special or smash attack and net a KO or even push them off the stage.
5 Flipper — Super Smash Bros. Melee
Make Recovery Impossible
The flippers which players got access to in Super Smash Bros. Meleewere some of the most antagonizing items ever dreamed of. Players could snag one of these and toss it at the right place over a ledge to ensure no player could make it back with perfect button coordination.
While most players would just zone out other people in a random part of the map, resourceful players understood the pure terror this item could create, as it didn't deal much damage but being placed in the right spot would guarantee a KO. Players could also use it to funnel other players into specific parts of smaller maps, leading them to a well-timed smash attack.
4 Beetle — Super Smash Bros. 4
Throw and Win
The beetle is a surprisingly broken item in the Smash Bros Franchise, as it looks non-intimidating, but hides a deadly secret. This little guy, when thrown at an opponent, can simply carry them into the sky and KO them outright, especially when a player is hit on higher parts of the map.
The hard part is actually landing the item on the other player, but once a player sees it work once, they'll know how oddly powerful and broken it can be.
3 Golden Hammer — Super Smash Bros. Brawl

Super Smash Bros. Brawl introduced a special version of the infamous hammer from the Smash games, which swung faster than the original and could actually make the player float if they hit the attack button fast enough. It lasts a good amount of time as well, and it's almost impossible to get past it's swinging to hit the player and interrupt them without a move that has invulnerability.
Players must just try and stay high and out of the way while this item lasts, otherwise the player holding this powerful item will simply KO every opponent with this speeding train of hammery.
2 Smash Ball - Super Smash Bros. Brawl
Final Smashes Were Broken
The introduction of Final Smashes in Super Smash Bros was awesome, but no player ever believed the mechanic was a balanced one. When it was introduced, players could only get a final smash by hitting the Smash Ball, an orb which flew around the stage for players to try and break first.
Some characters are better at this task than others, and for those characters, they then got access to the original final smash attacks, which ranged from high damage to instant KOs depending on the character. An item that gave players access to techniques that were broken, just a combination of fun but unfair game mechanics, which has been more balanced in Ultimate.
1 Hammer — Super Smash Bros.
The OG Broken Item
Every player knows the tune of this item being picked up because it has meant the demise of players for decades now. In the OG Super Smash Bros. game, no item was as strong, cheap and frustrating as the hammer.
Players pick it up, and because the original game simply had fewer options to choose from, they would just have to run as players chased after them with this hammer that could easily KO opponents at 70 percent. The hammer also could nullify projectiles which came at the player using it, meaning one of its weaknesses wasn’t even consistent. But it was all worth it to make your cousins weep at Christmas.
