Final Fantasy XIV does so many things right. Whether it’s the hardcore scene, having some of the most challenging raid content on the planet, or the more casual variety, such as crafting & gathering or simple world boss trains, there’s something here for everybody.

One thing that’s universal, though, is a player’s ability to emote. Emotes are in almost every type of online video game, not just MMORPGs, and each one showcases both how you feel in the moment and how you want to express yourself. With the latest 7.55 patch for Dawntrail, we got a brand new emote that’s a little more subtle, but important enough to have in your catalog.

What is the Look Back Emote?

Like any MMORPG on the market, expressing yourself is one of the key components to the experience. Whether it’s having a specific visual look, a big mount to hop onto or a pet/minion at your side, there’s generally something for everyone.

Final Fantasy XIV is no different, having a plethora of ways to best represent your avatar. The way Square Enix gives the player so many different options, with everything mentioned above, along with glamour outfits, both purchased in the game’s cash shop or obtained image, along with emotes.

The latter is a key component to the Final Fantasy XIV experience, as you’ll find countless players idling in main city hubs like Limsa Lominsa dancing or performing some sort of action.

The Look Back emote is the latest emote introduced in patch 7.55 of Dawntrail’s expansion, something that fortunately can be obtained by everyone, at least to a certain degree. It’s a static emote, one that doesn’t have to loop or reset, and can be used anywhere at any time.

How to Get the Look Back Emote

With the release of patch 7.55 of Dawntrail, Square Enix has introduced various new content for players to dig through, and you’ll be able to earn the Look Back emote through this.

Occult Crescent: North Horn

The first option is, without doubt, the best way to obtain the Look Back emote, simply because it means interacting with the new content of the Occult Crescent, specifically the North Horn.

This is the big drop in patch 7.55, introducing a second Field Operation zone within Occult Crescent. This adds an extra twenty Knowledge levels to get through, along with new FATES, Critical Engagements and, of course, a challenging dungeon at the end.

The latter is the most important aspect as the Look Back emote is tied directly to the Forked Tower: Magic dungeon. This is only accessed after getting through the entire story of the North Horn, handed to you by both Ketenramm and Archive. This involves various quests:

  • Occult Reunion
  • The North Horn Beckons
  • A Confluence Conundrum
  • Aetherial Oddities
  • A Familiar Issue
  • The Observant Servant
  • In the Shadow of the Tower

After completing the last quest, which requires a Knowledge level of 40, it will unlock the Forked Tower: Magic dungeon. There are two different variations: Normal and Extreme. If you’re looking for a challenge, definitely try out the latter, but if you’re looking for a quick and fast means of obtaining the emote, participate in the normal variant.

This is a fairly easy dungeon that doesn’t require much pre-existing knowledge of the fights, but definitely make sure to get into a group so you can be resurrected if you die. Each fight, along with the chests hidden in the dungeon, contain Arcane Amulets, around 13 per run.

These Arcane Amulets are required to purchase the Ballroom Etiquette – Rearward Regards item from the Expedition Antiquarian (X: 39.4 Y: 38.7). This unlocks the Look Back emote. This will take about three or four runs of Forked Tower: Magic normal.

Marketboard

If you aren’t up-to-date with the expansions or simply don’t want to grind both South Horn and North Horn, there’s an alternative option: open your figurative wallet. Head to your local marketboard and you will be able to purchase the Look Back emote.

This is because most of the cosmetic items from Occult Crescent, both in the North and South Horns, are completely tradeable, allowing players to earn a little gil on the side if they plan on grinding, and others to benefit off of it.

At the time of writing, it is a bit pricey given the content is fairly new, but it will only go down in price as we approach the next expansion, Evercold.
