I was working in Corporate Communications at Mercedes-Benz AG at the time, helping build the company's first global online presence. My argument was simple: the internet would create an entirely new kind of presence — one where communications and marketing could, for the first time, truly work as one. And where organizations could reach anyone, anywhere, in real time. Thirty years later, I would change very little of that. What I got wrong: I underestimated how hard organizations would resist that shift. Digital was supposed to become a discipline. In many places, it's still treated as a channel. With AI, I recognize the pattern. Everyone is focused on what it can do. Far fewer are asking what it changes — about how we lead, how we communicate, how trust works. The better question is rarely "how do we use this?" It's "what does this change?" #AI #Communications

That’s the beauty of this rivalry: consumers win either way.

On the drive back to Montvale, New Jersey, this photo was taken in Washington, D.C. No filters. No social media. Just a camera - and the feeling of being close to something special. Today, a new S-Class will be unveiled. Curious to see how it raises the bar once again.

Michael Kuhn hat dies geteiltCongrats Thomas Zimmermann on this important milestone for autonomous mobility! Great to see the partnership with the City of Hamburg setting a strong example of how innovation and responsibility go hand in hand.Michael Kuhn hat dies geteiltAn important milestone for autonomous mobility in Germany, and beyond. We’re proud to share that Freenow by Lyft has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the City of Hamburg, formalising our role as the city’s first chosen partner to support the transition of the taxi sector toward autonomous vehicles. Together with the city, we’re helping move autonomous taxis from controlled testing into real-world operations, within a clear and responsible public-private framework. This partnership is built on trust. My sincere thanks to Senator Anjes Tjarks and the City of Hamburg (Freie und Hansestadt Hamburg) for their confidence and openness to innovation. Hamburg is not only a city leading in sustainable mobility, but also our hometown, which makes this step especially meaningful. Our focus is clear: combining innovation with responsibility. We’re introducing autonomous technology step by step, prioritising safety, and integrating it seamlessly into existing mobility systems with the local taxi industry as an active partner from day one. 📖 Read more background in our today’s press announcement and FAZ piece by Christian Müßgens (links in comments).

Michael Kuhn hat dies repostetMichael Kuhn hat dies repostetThe year is 1886. Carl Benz registered the patent for the world’s first automobile, ushering in the era of modern individual mobility. That same year, Gottlieb Daimler created the first four-wheeled motor car. The rest, as they say, is history. We have told this story countless times, yet it never loses its magic. This year marks 140 years of pioneering spirit and engineering excellence – a milestone that shaped not just an industry, but human progress. Fast forward to 2026 and the original patent is now part of UNESCO’s Memory of the World Register. Over the decades, we’ve introduced icons like the supercharged models of the 1920s and 1930s, the 300 SL, the G-Class and the SLS, along with many others. Some have become synonymous with desirability, while others, such as the S-Class, have set the technological benchmark. Our Mercedes-Benz 300 SLR “Uhlenhaut Coupé” holds the title of the most valuable car in the world, and the Mercedes-Benz Museum is one of the most popular museums in the automotive world. And just last year, the electric CONCEPT AMG GT XX broke over 25 records. The list of incredible achievements is long, with each one as impressive as the last. Today, we are in the midst of the biggest product and technology launch programme in the history of Mercedes-Benz, redefining individual mobility once again, while staying true to the values that have brought us here. That spirit, which drove Carl Benz and Gottlieb Daimler over a century ago, still drives us today. So, nothing has changed, yet everything has. As we celebrate new products, innovations and breakthroughs, we never forget where it all started. Mercedes-Benz is not just another car brand. We are the inventor of the automobile.

Over the past years – and especially this year – you have shown what true transformation means: confidence, determination, passion, resilience, and above all, unity and team spirit. I will take this spirit with me as I move forward, and I wish the team all the very best. Bosch Mobility CTO Mathias Pillin: “The industry overcommitted to electrification and created too many solitaires.” In an interview, Mathias Pillin, CTO of Bosch Mobility, cautioned that the auto industry’s rapid push into EVs has led to fragmented architectures and costly complexity — particularly in Europe. 🔎 Key insights from Pillin: Expectations of a fast BEV tipping point have not been met. OEMs created too many unique EV platforms (“solitaires”), slowing scale and raising costs. China’s standardized, off-the-shelf approach has enabled faster, cost-effective scaling. 🌍 Bosch’s strategy in a volatile market: Multi-powertrain portfolio: ICE, EV, hybrid, and hydrogen. €3 billion invested in semiconductors and electromobility (2021–2023). Over 20,000 engineers in India focusing on software, AI, and mobility. No. 1 in China for electric powertrains by volume, while still a leader in ICE systems. 🚛 Diesel remains relevant, especially in long-haul and heavy-duty applications, while fuel cells and hydrogen are emerging solutions. Volkswagen Group ranks #1 as the most innovative global automotive group, according to recent AutomotiveINNOVATIONS study 2025. German OEMs increased their innovation share from 22.8% to 24.3% year-over-year, signaling a clear upward trend. With concentration on innovation efforts in fewer, more impactful areas—such as premium and performance EVs, software integration, and autonomous driving.

A few weeks after our Podcast with Ralf Brandstätter on Volkswagen Group Strategy for China ‚In China, for China with China Speed‘ we now move West to take a look at the US-Business for Volkswagen. In my talk with Dr. Kjell Gruner - CEO of Volkswagen Group of America we discover, that the US Business is as challenging as the Chinese . - Customer and market acceptance of Electric Cars is far behind all planning assumptions. - The midterm Outlook has been halfed recently … - New Tax regulations within the US are likely to have even more negative Impact . - Customer needs and wants of US Customers towards Cars are still ‚misread‘ by European Engineering Teams - the present and upcoming US Tariff Regime clearly poses a Strategic hurdle or even threat for EU companies to continue growth in the US. Thanks for the great conversation Dr. Kjell Gruner !

AI applications are growing much faster than we all may have thought before. On the WAIC this year the first discussion about common guardrails came up. EU - as always - is first with regulations, the AI ACT. But of course it should be of common interest to grant an ethic and social standard. A uniform set of rules is beneficial; a patchwork quilt hinders future development enormously. I had a very good discussion with Alexandra Ilina about the impact on the automotive industry. Thank you very much for the fruitful discussion Alexandra.

I recently sat down with Frank Mertens from Electrified Media / Electrified Magazin to discuss how electric mobility is reaching an exciting new phase for Volkswagen. The next generation of our vehicles will make it easier than ever for more people to switch to e-mobility. A great example is the upcoming ID. Polo, which brings one of our most iconic nameplates into the #electric era while retaining the design, usability and character that people expect from a #Volkswagen. Along with the #ID. Cross, it’ll be priced from around 25,000 euros. We believe that these models have the potential to trigger a noticeable boost for electric mobility across Europe, opening the door to a much broader customer base. We’re already seeing strong momentum: ➡️ in 2025, our BEV sales increased by more than 49 per cent in Europe and 61 per cent in Germany. We expect this growth to continue, driven above all by our expanding portfolio of cars that really appeal to people. You can read the full interview: https://lnkd.in/dxjwn4AQ It was a great conversation about the future of electric mobility!

What convinced a ZF veteran to leave and start over? The realization that decentralized data infrastructure could achieve what centralized platforms never could: trust at scale. Thomas Rösch, CEO of Cofinity-X, joins "Under the Hood: Automotive Storytelling" to share the Catena-X origin story. And it's a great story. Three insights that stood out: 1️⃣ "It's like a USB stick now" → When 28 companies agree on connector standards, data sharing becomes plug-and-play. No more months of interface debates. 2️⃣ The network effect requirement → "If we get only 50 German companies, it's not an ecosystem. We need worldwide participation." Gaining traction is not always easy, but the shift in the automotive industry towards collaboration helps tremendously. 3️⃣ Cross-industry expansion → The same infrastructure works outside of automotive. Thomas' advice: "Believe and make it. That's really the story. So that's what I did, let's say my whole career. So if I believe in something, I really make it happen." 🎧 Listen to hear how belief and persistence built an ecosystem that's reshaping industrial data exchange. Is Europe playing "football on a steep slope" when it comes to its automotive industry? ⚽🇪🇺 Dr. Stefan Hartung, Chairman of the Board of Management of Bosch, powerfully highlights the immense competitive pressure faced by European automotive suppliers. With non-European competitors enjoying price advantages of 15-35% due to lower energy and labor costs, our industry is facing an uneven playing field. A Roland Berger study for CLEPA - European Association of Automotive Suppliers warns that without action, Europe risks losing up to 23% of its automotive value creation in the next five years, potentially leading to the loss of 300.000 to 500.000 jobs across the supply chain. This isn't just about economic loss; it's about safeguarding European know-how, technological leadership, and industrial capacity. We cannot afford to stand by and watch. As Dr. Hartung states, we need to restore fairness in competition. Other major markets already protect their industries with local value creation requirements. 💡 The solution? European Local Content Requirements (LCRs). This isn't about shunning free trade, but about ensuring a level playing field and strategically supporting our own. What would this entail? Defining an "EU-made" vehicle by criteria such as assembly in the EU and significant percentages of EU-made components, particularly for critical technologies like e-powertrain and electronics. Implementing LCRs across various policies, including: - Public procurement and fleet renewal schemes. - Linking public funding and incentives (like purchase incentives) to EU-made vehicles. - Giving supercredits to EU-made vehicles in CO2 regulations (e.g., counting an EU-made BEV as 1.5 vehicles, and an EU-made PHEV/REX as 1.4 vehicles) to reflect their better carbon footprint during production. - Preventing circumvention by introducing screening criteria for foreign direct investments, including thresholds for local sourcing and technology transfer. This comprehensive approach will protect existing capacities and incentivize the development of critical, currently underdeveloped European supply chains. It's time for Europe to act decisively. Whenever European public money is used, it must contribute to European production. This is an act of strategic autonomy and a call for clear preference for those who choose Europe. cc Bosch España SERNAUTO Ricardo Olalla Guerra #MadeInEurope #EUIndustry #Automotive #LocalContent #FairCompetition #EuropeanEconomy #CLEPA #Bosch #IndustrialPolicy

Sharp diagnosis. The observations from my perspective support this analysis. There is a very common misunderstanding leaders of (you called it legacy) auto makers share. Software native decision makers know they can iterate fast and release often, based on a well elaborated, foundational architecture, providing a successful long line. (e.g. unix philosophy - writing code once in high-quality using it for a long time in a very modular way) Automotive native decision makers recognise the possibility of fast iterations and frequent releases - and misinterpret that as an invitation to strategic Odyssey. “The car of the future won’t be defined by engine, chassis or panel gaps — but by code.” That’s how my VISION Mobility interview starts — and it sums up the industry’s problem rather neatly. We all talk about software-defined vehicles, yet half the industry is still busy building five different versions of the same half-baked foundations. Everyone reinvents the middleware, the protocols, the glue layers… and then wonders why development crawls while others ship features at frightening speed. As I said in the interview: the real shift isn’t another infotainment OS or app store. It’s a robust, open platform and a virtual vehicle you can develop on years before hardware exists. Start early, iterate continuously, hand over seamlessly. No rewrites. No prototype purgatory. Just actual progress — so teams can focus on what really differentiates a car… and not on rebuilding 1990s plumbing. Leading one of Germany’s largest energy providers, Georg Stamatelopoulos is not just powering industries like automotive, metals, and food - he’s also providing energy to millions of households. But in an era of economic uncertainty, his vision requires something rare: growth, not downsizing. As the energy transition accelerates, EnBW is expanding its workforce to meet the rising demands of a cleaner, more connected future. How does EnBW intend to expand beyond its traditional regional footprint while successfully navigating the complex regulatory and market environments across Europe? While renewable energy generation continues to get cheaper, the cost of building and expanding the necessary networks is skyrocketing. This imbalance poses a significant obstacle to the future of clean mobility as it is inextricably linked to renewable energy and a reliable power grid. Without an ample supply of renewable energy and a stable grid, the environmental benefits of electric vehicles will remain unrealized. So, how can we ensure that these two complex transformations are effectively integrated and are driving real change? New technologies such as software-defined vehicles (SDVs), connected cars, autonomous driving, and smart infrastructure are significantly increasing energy demand while also creating strategic opportunities for EnBW to drive innovation at the intersection of mobility and intelligent energy systems. What opportunities does this convergence offer for shaping the future of sustainable infrastructure and smart mobility? 📍 Hall B3, Booth C20, Munich Exhibition Center 📅 September 8, 2025, 13:30 – 14:45 🔗 Join us in person—or virtually if you can’t make it. Until Sunday, Munich will be the Mecca of the mobility industry, with the IAA MOBILITY and side events like ZUKUNFT NAHVERKEHR where visitors can experience the future of transportation. 🎤 I had the opportunity to moderate a panel at IAA Mobility titled "Better Safe Than Sorry – Financing the Future of Mobility". The discussion brought together Dr. Philipp Wackerbeck (Strategy&), Susan Sahl Poynor (Allianz Partners), Ronny Seidel (BNP Paribas Personal Finance) and Lawrence Hamilton (Lucid Motors) to explore how we fund innovation in mobility, and what risks and alliances shape that journey. 💡 While there was broad consensus on the importance of collaboration and long-term vision, it’s clear that the path forward is anything but straightforward. From shifting regulatory landscapes to the tension between profitability and sustainability, the panel not just gave answers, but also raised questions that have to be answered in the future. And perhaps that’s exactly what we need: 𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗵𝗼𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗱𝗲𝗯𝗮𝘁𝗲𝘀. Stepping off the stage and into the exhibition halls, one thing became abundantly clear: this year’s IAA is overwhelmingly focused on #electrification. EVs are no longer the future, they’re the present. And yet, the political statements made during the event stood in contrast. Both Chancellor Friedrich Merz and Bavaria's Prime Minister Markus Söder emphasized the importance of “technology openness”. But walking through the booths, it was hard not to feel that the industry has already made its choice. Thanks to the panelists for their insights and to everyone who joined the conversation. The questions raised—on stage and off—deserve ongoing attention and discussions. #IAAMobility #Electrification #MobilityFinance #TechnologyOpenness #EVTransition #FutureOfTransport #MobilityPolitics #Regulation
