Building an extension to Duke Point Nanaimo will increase Freight revenues and increase ridership substantially. BC’s 2022 Freight Analysis identified that developing a rail connection to Duke Point would create strong synergies between the port, local industries, and the Island Rail Corridor. But did you know that connection would also supercharge ridership? In the ongoing Direct Demand Model ridership study, conducted by Restore Island Rail in partnership with Integrated Travel and Arizona State University, one key variable measures ridership gains from proximity to major ports of travel. Ferry and airport passengers are among those most likely to use transit, especially when it connects them directly to key Island destinations as the Island Rail Corridor does. While a Duke Point extension doesn’t yet exist, the combined boost in freight volumes and passenger ridership it would bring makes it an investment well worth pursuing. Be aware On April 28, a presidential order directed Sean P. Duffy (USA), Secretary of Transportation, to take a stricter stance on English-language proficiency standards. And so, English-language proficiency for all Commercial Driver Licences (CDL) is currently under strict scrutiny. This applies to Canadian CDL as well while driving on US soil. 🚨 CBSA Systems Outage – Contingency Procedures in Effect 🚨 Canada Border Services Agency | Agence des services frontaliers du Canada has been down for extensive period. A contingency has been declared, which means all affected parties must revert to paper processes until further notice. Impacted Systems 🚫 E-Manifest 🚫 CERS 🚫 All EDI transmissions with CBSA Single Window system (Some partial functionality may be restored, but most remain unavailable.) For shipments requiring Partner Government Agency (PGA) clearance, most electronic transmissions are not flowing from CBSA to PGAs. Action: Prepare and submit paper packages. Once stamped, the driver can proceed with the stamped notice. For Canadian Food Inspection Agency loads - ✅Form CFIA/ACIA 5272 (Request for Documentation Review) is required. The form is available online and must be completed and submitted with documents to the NISC email. ✅Once a stamped release is received, you may provide it to CBSA/driver. Note: The online CFIA Tracker is not updating at this time. Key Reminder Tomorrow, September 30th is a Federal holiday in Canada (National Day for Truth and Reconciliation). Delays should be anticipated - get paper submissions prepared today wherever possible.
