Kevin Marler ☁ reposted thisYour first hires set the tone. When a founder calls me about their first external hire, it’s never about the CV. It’s about the story we want to tell candidates, the patterns we’re setting for the team, and the signals we send about how this company operates. I recently worked with a startup making its first engineering hire. No JD existed. No interview process. They weren’t sure what “success” looked like in the role. We sat down and mapped it out together, not just the skills, but how the person would actually influence the company, what decisions they’d make, and how the team would interact. We built the process around that. The result? The candidate knew exactly what they were walking into, the team understood what “great” looked like, and the hire set a precedent for every future team member. Early-stage hiring isn’t about speed or volume. It’s about clarity, ownership, and creating a candidate experience that reflects who you are as a company. #canadiantech #startuphiring

Kevin Marler ☁ reposted thisHot take on hiring models 👇 More recruiters ≠ better recruiting. Throwing multiple recruiters at the same role often creates noise, not signal. When too many people are sourcing in parallel: 💭 You lose control of the narrative. Different recruiters pitch the role differently, emphasize different things, and sometimes oversell or misrepresent it. 💭 Credibility suffers. A recruiter who doesn’t truly understand the industry, function, or level can’t have a meaningful conversation with senior candidates. The candidate experience degrades. Nothing makes a company look more disorganized than a candidate being contacted three times about the same role by different people. Great hiring isn’t about volume. It’s about alignment. Hiring is not a race to flood inboxes. It’s a reputation-building, trust-building exercise that compounds over time. I always tell potential clients, if I'm not the best fit for you, I will help you find someone who will be. You'll be far more effective with recruitment when you build a relationship with a recruiter that knows your business, knows your team, and can drop in when needed. 🫶

It’s hard to put into words what this journey has meant. What I will miss most are the people. The collaboration, the energy, and the shared commitment to doing great work have made these years truly memorable. I feel incredibly fortunate to have worked alongside such talented colleagues and leaders across regions, cultures, and teams — many of whom have become friends. There are far too many people to thank individually after such a long journey, but I’m especially grateful to Kevin Simzer for his partnership, leadership, and support over the years. I’ve learned a great deal from working together and truly valued the opportunity to contribute alongside him. Trend has been more than a role; it has been a community and an important part of my life for a long time. Together we’ve navigated growth, change, challenges, and successes, and I feel privileged to have been part of such a special organisation. To everyone I’ve had the privilege to work with along the way — thank you. I hope our paths cross again, and I look forward to staying in touch. As I make the move back to the UK, I’m carrying with me many great memories and friendships that I value enormously.

Kevin Marler ☁ liked thisKevin Marler ☁ liked this“Build something new” vs. “Build something better.” I was reminded of this last week at our partner Kombo Team's webinar: Three Bets Product and Engineering Leader in HR tech should make right now. Uber, Airbnb, and Slack built something new. Zoom, Linear, and Superhuman built something better. Category creation vs disruptors. I think a lot about whether HiringBranch is a better assessment or a new way of qualifying candidates. Here’s my case for why we err on the side of category creation. Traditional assessments measure proxies for communication ability, personality traits, situational judgment, and cognitive aptitude. HiringBranch actually has candidates demonstrate skills in realistic job simulations. This is meaningful because we didn’t just build a faster or better-looking assessment. HiringBranch replaces "what would you do in this situation?" with "show me.” Our sales prospects have to form a new mental model of what our product even does. These all tell me that we have built something new. I’m taking feedback. What do you think? It’s not clear cut case (contrary to what many of us founders would like to believe!).

Spotlight on Canada’s Engineering & Science Hiring Trends – 2026 If you’re a STEM professional, now is a great time to be searching for opportunities in Canada. One of the most exciting shifts I’m seeing in the market is the surge in demand for experts who can help companies unlock the potential of artificial intelligence (AI), not just in tech, but in traditional engineering and science roles too. Right now, roles like AI engineers, machine learning researchers, and power systems engineers are among the fastest growing. Why? Canadian companies across industries are accelerating their adoption of AI and automation, while also investing in green infrastructure and major construction projects. In fact, civil engineers remain highly sought-after as infrastructure projects; from highways to sustainable energy, drive growth across the country. On the science side, the expansion of AI and digital technologies means that skills in data analysis, cloud engineering, and software engineering are commanding premium salaries, especially in Toronto and Calgary. The demand for professionals who can blend traditional science expertise with advanced technology is only getting stronger. Whether you’re an early-career engineer or an experienced scientist, Canada’s hiring trends are clear: adaptability and tech-savvy skills will set you apart in this competitive, rapidly evolving landscape. If you want to know more about engineering and science career opportunities, or you’re curious about how Kelly can help you navigate these trends—connect with me! #EngineeringJobs #ScienceCareers #HiringTrends #CanadaJobs #KellyCanada

Time Kills Hires: Every recruiter knows it, but how can you fix it? At Linxus Group Inc., and with one of our key client partners, we recently launched a very "unique" recruiting structure designed around a simple premise: Streamline hiring the right candidates AND increase retention. Notice what's missing? "Make tons of money." That's intentional (and you will see why later). We focused on solving a core problem every recruiter knows too well: Time is your biggest enemy. The moment a candidate applies or you reach out, the invisible clock starts ticking. The more time that passes, the lower the likelihood of a successful hire. Slow processes lead to lost interest, or candidates accepting offers elsewhere. Time truly kills hires. The Early Results Are Shocking (in a good way!) While this new system is still in the "testing" phase, the initial data is incredible: Before this system: The average "no-show" rate for interviews and first days was a staggering 70%. Now: The interview no-show rate is down to 15%, and (knocking on wood) the start date no-show rate is currently 0%! The main driver? Speed and efficiency. Initial outreach to Interview: Under 3 days Initial Interview to Offer: Under 5 days Candidate Feedback Speaks Volumes We've anonymously asked candidates: "How has this process been compared to other hiring processes you've gone through?" The overwhelmingly positive feedback highlights the value of this approach and the main theme of the responses has been: “It’s great. Very quick.” The "Secret" Wasn't Radical The craziest part? There were no massive, expensive changes. It was a few minor process tweaks. Essentially, we improved efficiency by simply being more efficient. We removed bottlenecks and prioritized a seamless, respectful candidate experience. The best outcome: the client is saving a lot of money, and we aren't wasting our resources chasing candidates for months (see, here is the money part...) We're excited to watch this structure mature. If your company is struggling with high drop-off rates or slow time-to-hire, it might be time to rethink how you value a candidate's time. If you are looking for ways to hire more effectively and transform your candidate experience, let's connect today: MLuke@LinxusGroup.Com #Recruiting #Hiring #Efficiency #TalentAcquisition #CandidateExperience #LinxusGroup #HR #RecruitmentStrategy #TimeToHire
