Fast forward to being hired to (re)launch websites/digital properties for Rogers, Workplace Safety and Insurance Board, LexisNexis Canada, and Lerners LLP., plus some private clients. I have a good handle on what works, what to avoid, and how to get them noticed once launched ... plus I really enjoy the work, which is a lucky thing to say these days. If you need my help on an upcoming project similar to the above, please contact me. Happy to sign an NDA if needed. I prefer remote so I can make best use of my time/your budget, but hybrid works too. Consulting, part time, or a contract. I don't need pizza or a gym membership, just a fair $ rate is fine. I'm not a "yes man" and don't need to be micromanaged. We'll respectfully disagree on things a few times along the line. It's because I'm transparent and direct, and will 100% care about your project's success, and how to represent you well with external vendors and the target audience. John Carson reacted on thisJohn Carson reacted on thisI wanted to share a job rejection email I received from a CEO (and founder I believe) last week. For some context this person had given me a date and time range they could interview, I said I would be there at that date within that range. I show up and the office is locked up, lights off. I finally get ahold of the CEO. They tell me there was some miscommunications and that we’d interview the next week. Monday comes and the day passes. I ask for their availability. This is the message I received. I post this to say: Employers, recruiters, and CEOs everywhere, this is never okay. This is never appropriate. To essentially laugh in the face of someone who has a glimmer of hope in today’s job market is not only unprofessional, but deplorable. I get it, sometimes the CEO isn’t well spoken, or is just “nonchalant”. Hire someone to handle it then. A recruiter, an HR manager, an EA(I’m looking for work and would love to connect btw😉), anyone. One of the things I love about scuba diving is how present it forces you to be. You slow down, focus, take in your surroundings and, for a little while everything else gets quiet. It’s a great reminder that wellness can simply be about doing something you love that allows you to disconnect, recharge and enjoy the moment. Whatever the rest of your summer looks like, I hope you find some time to do something that brings you joy. Enjoy the rest of your summer!

John Carson liked thisJohn Carson liked thisA 56-year-old client of ours interviewed for a job in June. Three rounds. Then the “not a cultural fit” email. Everyone he met was younger. Much younger. He suspected his age played a part. But he responded graciously and moved on. A few weeks later, he landed an Operations Director role with a company that valued his experience. Guess who reached out this week? Yep. The company from June. Was he still available? Their hire didn’t work out. The recruiter spilled the beans. Privately of course. Said she’d been pushing for him all along. Their new hire couldn’t handle the pressure. Quit after 8 weeks. Oh. So NOW you want the guy who’s seen some shit. The same guy you weren’t sure would fit in eight weeks ago. He hasn’t gotten younger. Apparently, “cultural fit” becomes a lot more flexible when somebody needs to overhaul the operation. Unfortunately, he’s busy. Working for the company that didn’t need a failed hire to appreciate him. Was age the reason you passed? Only you know. Maybe employers need to spend less time wondering whether a candidate will fit in at happy hour. And more time figuring out whether he can keep you from needing a drink. Built in 1893, there is a search on to hire a new General Manager for one of the oldest, most storied theatres in Canada. One the best decisions I've made since moving to Kawartha Lakes was to join the Board of Directors at the FLATO Academy Theatre, the cultural gem of the area, to help shepherd the theatre as it enters an important new chapter. The Academy Theatre Foundation is looking for a strong, capable leader to help shape what comes next. This is a significant leadership opportunity for someone who can bring together strategic thinking, business and operational leadership, audience development, community engagement and a genuine passion for the performing arts. The next General Manager will help steer the Theatre’s next phase of growth, strengthen its long-term sustainability, build audiences and partnerships, and help ensure this historic venue continues to play a vital role in Kawartha Lakes for generations to come. Previous General Manager experience is an asset, but we’re equally interested in accomplished leaders whose experience demonstrates that they are ready to step into the role. The Saskatoon Chamber of Commerce just did something that most advocacy organizations don't bother doing anymore. They built a real case. Peer benchmarking. Data. Specific asks. No vague "we need better accountability" language. Just: here's where Saskatoon ranks, here's what peer cities do, here's what it costs, here's the ask. Saskatoon spends $1.42 per resident on its audit function. Calgary spends $2.23. Vancouver spends $3.35. That gap isn't a footnote. It's a deliberate governance choice. The uncomfortable truth about reports like this one is that they're only as powerful as the political will behind them. Excellent research dies quietly all the time. The document doesn't create momentum. The people who refuse to let it sit on a shelf do. So the question isn't whether this report is good. It is. The question is who on Council picks it up and runs with it. That's the ask that doesn't appear on page 14, though I'm sure Jason Aebig made the ask in City Chambers when he presented it. Well done 👏
