The interconnectivity between Marvel projects has arguably waned a little in recent years, as the franchise has gone through something of a transitional period of late. Gone are the days when every new MCU movie would segue seamlessly into the next via a strategically crafted post-credits scene or two. That said, with all the heavy lifting required to pivot away from the aborted Kang arc, both Thunderbolts* and The Fantastic Four: First Steps did resurrect the tradition somewhat by obliquely teasing Avengers: Doomsday during their own credits. Fans will be pleased to know that Spider-Man: Brand New Day does the same.

With the latest outing for Tom Holland's wallcrawler serving as the final Marvel movie to release before the fifth Avengers extravaganza, there was a strong feeling going in that it would feature some kind of set-up for the imminent rise of Robert Downey Jr.'s Doctor Doom. Sure enough, Brand New Day does indeed slip in a subtle nod to what is on the horizon for Earth's Mightiest Heroes as they battle to save the multiverse yet again. That said, we are living through a very different era of Marvel, so the movie's foreshadowing is less on-the-nose than fans are used to, and it may leave some scratching their heads as they leave the theater.

Make Sure to Stick Around Until the Very End

Yes, Spider-Man: Brand New Day has one post-credits scene. There is no mid-credits scene, but there is a short yet intriguing reward for those who elect to hang back until the very end of the credits. Be warned, this scene takes on a very different form from the end credits tags in previous Spider-Man films. There are no Chris Evans, Skrulls, or Tom Hardy crossovers this time around. Instead, this tag scene is a very slight sequence, without any cameos, familiar faces, or even any actors at all. Barring a voiceover from Jacob Batalon, that is.

Specifically, the post-credits scene takes the form of an update from Ned Leeds' Spidey Tracker app. The app, which is a running gag throughout Brand New Day, was created by Ned to help people keep track of where their friendly neighborhood superhero is. In the post-credits scene, though, something curious happens. As the app attempts to pinpoint the webhead's location, it zooms out of Queens, then New York, then the US, and then the whole world, rendered in glorious 8-bit detail. After a moment of glitching and buffering, the app drifts over to the right of the planet and stops in what appears to be an empty part of outer space. "Location found," the app announces.

This naturally leaves fans with a lot to ponder, not least how much of a genius Ned must be to make an app that can track Spidey's location across the solar system and not just the planet. Most fans will likely take this as some kind of vague hint as to what's going to unfold in Doomsday, although some might be confused as to how this is possible considering that Tom Holland has not been announced as part of the film's cast. On the other hand, those who are familiar with the comics Doomsday is based on may have an inkling about what is really going on here. The truth is that this scene may not be so much a set-up for Avengers 5 as it is a sneaky bit of foreshadowing for Avengers 6.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day's Post-Credits Scene May Be Teasing Avengers: Secret Wars, Not Doomsday

So, where is Spider-Man? Given what fans know of Doomsday's comic book inspirations, the most obvious suggestion is that Ned's app has tracked Peter Parker to Battleworld. In the 2015 Secret Wars comics, this was the amalgamated realm made up of various merged realities created after Doctor Doom gained mastery over the multiverse. On the page, this allowed the main universe's Peter and the Ultimate universe's Miles Morales to unite, but fans are hoping that the screen adaptation will result in a reunion for all three Spideys from No Way Home. It certainly seems safe to assume that the MCU's Battleworld will be a blend of the X-Men and Fantastic Four's universes and Earth-616.

Keeping with the same source material, another potential option is that the app has tracked Spidey to a life raft. After the destruction of the multiverse, Reed Richards creates life rafts — ark-like ships designed to protect select heroes and villains deemed more important than others from the cataclysm. These include Spider-Man, Black Panther, Captain Marvel, and Star-Lord (a lineup that also wouldn't be out of place in the MCU). In the comics, when Spidey and the others emerge from their life raft, they find themselves in Battleworld and set about trying to restore the multiverse to what it was. In the MCU, it's possible that the life rafts are engineered to protect the multiverse's Anchor Beings, a concept introduced in Deadpool & Wolverine. Fans have long theorized that Holland's Spidey could be 616's Anchor Being.

What's interesting about this post-credits scene, then, is that it is likely more of a tease for Avengers: Secret Wars, coming in 2027, than it is this December's Avengers: Doomsday. Tom Holland has claimed many times that he is not in Doomsday, and while it's still possible he will have a small cameo, his busy work schedule over the past couple of years, and the sheer size of that film's cast already, suggests he is telling the truth. What's more, it's easy to assume that Doomsday will introduce Victor Von Doom and the threat he poses to the multiverse before he cracks all of reality asunder and creates Battleworld in Secret Wars. In other words, fans may be waiting longer than expected for the full meaning of Brand New Day's post-credits scene to come to light.
