Spider-Man games have had a long and inconsistent history. For every standout release, there have been rushed movie tie-ins, awkward experiments, and titles that never quite understood what makes the character work. That is what makes the true greats stand out even more.

A 10/10 Spider-Man game is not just about combat or story; it is about capturing the feeling of being Spider-Man, from movement to tone to how the world reacts to the character. Across decades, only a handful of games have perfectly achieved that balance, and those are the ones that still define the webhead in gaming today.

Spider-Man 2 remains one of the most important superhero games ever made, even if some of its systems have aged. At the time, it introduced something that had never been done properly before in a Spider-Man game: physics-based web swinging tied to actual buildings.

Instead of attaching webs to the sky like in the original PlayStation titles, this game required players to connect webs to real structures across Manhattan. That single design choice changed everything. Movement was no longer automated or purely cosmetic. It became a skill that players had to learn and master, creating a sense of speed and control that still holds up surprisingly well.

Critically, the game was praised for how it made players "feel" like Spider-Man, with its open-world New York and dynamic crimes reinforcing that fantasy. Even modern discussions still point back to 2004's Spider-Man 2 as the foundation for every Spider-Man game that followed. Its repetitive mission structure and pacing were criticized, yes, but it didn’t detract from an overall incredible experience.

Marvel's Spider-Man is the moment when everything finally came together. After years of experimentation, this was the game that refined the Spider-Man formula into something complete. Insomniac Games took inspiration from earlier titles, especially the 2004 classic, and modernized them with smoother traversal, tighter combat, and a much stronger narrative focus.

Swinging through Manhattan became effortless yet expressive, striking a balance between accessibility and depth, but what truly elevated the game was its portrayal of Peter Parker. Instead of an origin story, it presented a more experienced Spider-Man dealing with responsibility, relationships, and consequences. The result was a story that resonated beyond typical superhero expectations, supported by a detailed open world and polished mechanics.

The game also set a new standard for superhero titles in general. It proved that a licensed game could match the quality and scope of top-tier AAA releases, something that, beyond the Batman: Arkham series, had rarely been the case before.

Marvel's Spider-Man 2 builds directly on what its predecessor established, expanding both the scale and ambition of the previous game. It even comes with more unlockables, suits, and characters to meet. The most notable addition is the dual protagonist system, allowing players to switch between Peter Parker and Miles Morales on the fly. This not only adds gameplay variety but also strengthens the narrative by exploring two perspectives within the same story.

Traversal and combat are both refined further. The introduction of new abilities, faster movement options, and expanded city areas creates a sense of momentum that rarely slows down. The symbiote plays a large part in this game, hence why it has its own upgrade path and visual customization. The game doubles down on what worked before rather than reinventing it, which is exactly what a sequel like this needed.

Critically, Marvel's Spider-Man 2 has been widely recognized as one of the best Spider-Man games ever made, with strong review scores and high player engagement. Its cinematic presentation and character-driven storytelling have helped cement it as a defining entry in the genre.

Honorable Mentions: 8/10 Spider-Man Games

Not every great Spider-Man game reaches that 10/10 level, but several come close and remain beloved for what they bring to the table. They might not be perfect for everyone, but they could be perfect for you.

Standing out for its comic book presentation and unique cel-shaded art style, Ultimate Spider-Man leaned heavily into its source material, even allowing players to play as Venom, which added a completely different gameplay dynamic.

While living in the shadow of Spider-Man 2, its movement was still incredibly engaging when compared to other open-world games of the time. It showed that the best part of any Spidey game is the exploration.

This game is remembered for its branching story and combat system that lets players switch between the standard Spider-Man and the symbiote suit. That choice-driven structure gave it a level of player agency rarely seen in superhero games.

The many cameos, inventive boss fights, and evolving city made Spider-Man: Web of Shadows a game deeply beloved by fans, although critics were a bit harsher due to its simple combat and structure. The story itself feels like the blueprint for what became Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, making it clearly deserving of a revisit.

Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions took a different approach entirely by featuring multiple versions of Spider-Man across different realities. Each version had its own gameplay style, keeping the experience fresh from start to finish.

A level-based structure means that there is no city to freely roam in, hence why it isn’t the best game to "feel" like Spider-Man, but it was the blueprint of many multiversal journeys to come for our favorite hero, Into the Spider-Verse in particular.

Technically as good and refined as the 2018 title, all while focusing on a more personal story, Marvel's Spider-Man: Miles Morales may be smaller in scope, but its tighter pacing and unique abilities help it stand out.

If it were a proper Spider-Man game instead of a "spin-off", it could be among the greats, but Miles did end up showing he has what it takes to carry the role of Spider-Man in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2.

If your favorite genre of video game is beat-’em-ups, then this certainly could be another 10/10 pick. Spider-Man and Venom: Maximum Carnage has everything a title of the genre needs, all while being faithful to the source material and letting Spidey and Venom team up.

Where it falls short is in how much Spider-Man has to offer in an interactive medium, but for a little fun time beating up goons and evildoers, this certainly is a worthwhile experience.
