The original Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters anime is home to some of the best and most famous players in the entire franchise. From the genius CEO Seto Kaiba to the friendly and determined Joey Wheeler, there is no shortage of impressive duelists ready to take on any willing opponents. Even among these amazing characters, there is only one who has risen to the top and claimed the title of King of Games: Yugi Muto.
The protagonist of this recently beloved 2000s anime was not only a natural-born champion, whose strategies could overcome even the biggest of obstacles, but he was also aided by the power of his deck. Each of the cards chosen by the hero to create his strategy held importance, but only a handful were pivotal to his victory. Through the years, Yugi has used hundreds of cards, and these are the best.
Yu-Gi-Oh Manga Celebrates 30th Anniversary With Nostalgic Music Video
To celebrate the 30th anniversary of Kazuki Takahashi's Yu-Gi-Oh manga series, a new music video highlights many memorable key moments.
10 Dark Magician
Yugi’s trusted partner and loyal ally, the Dark Magician, is by far one of the most iconic and beloved monsters ever introduced to the franchise. At first glance, this monster might not seem like much, as it not only requires two tributes to be summoned, but also has no special effects. New fans can be forgiven for wondering how the hero ever managed to win the best duels in the series with this monster.
Yu-Gi-Oh Creator’s First Original Artwork Exhibition Announced
To celebrate the manga's 30th anniversary, the first original artwork exhibition by late Yu-Gi-Oh creator Kazuki Takahashi will be held in 2026.
Yet, Dark Magician’s power comes not from his own card, but from the heaps of support that were used by Yugi to increase his power. As with the best magicians in all of anime, this iconic monster was prepared for almost all situations, with Spell cards designed to help him remove opponent creatures, Special Summon himself from the deck, or drastically increase his power.
9 Monster Reborn
One of the biggest differences between anime and TCG duelists is the way in which both groups construct their strategies. While it is typical in real games to include as many copies of important cards as possible – even for those just starting their journey as duelists – Yugi and his friends would usually run single copies, making it hard to access those cards again. As such, having a way to get back resources was needed.
Every Yu-Gi-Oh! Protagonist, Ranked By Design
The Yu-Gi-Oh! series is no stranger to vibrant and stylish designs, especially when it comes to the protagonists.
Monster Reborn, one of the best and most iconic Spell cards in the series, was the most optimal way to reuse cards. This tool had a simple but powerful effect, as it allowed the user to bring back to the field a card from either player’s graveyard. It is clear, precise, and quickly became a staple of the game, with almost all important characters playing one copy.
8 The Eye of Timaeus
Season 4 of the Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters anime, considered by many as one of the best filler arcs in anime history, introduced several cards that would forever change the game, these being the Three Legendary Dragons. These tools allowed the user to perform Fusion Summons using monsters that would typically not be able to combine.
The Yu-Gi-Oh! Series You Never Heard Of
Yu-Gi-Oh!, one of, if not the most, popular staples of anime and manga history, but it wasn't always about card games.
Yugi’s card, The Eye of Timaeus, was quite useful, as unlike the other two – which either needed Trap cards to work or would invoke equipment for other monsters – it could instantly bring forth mighty creatures. By using its power, the hero was able to transform many of his already imposing beasts into warriors of legend.
7 Mirror Force
Those who have had the opportunity to play Yu-Gi-Oh!'s TCG might remember a time in which Trap Cards reigned supreme. No matter what kind of strategy an opponent would be playing, a well-timed counter could completely destroy it. There is one name that can still bring fear to the hearts of both TCG players and the characters in the anime; the destructive Mirror Force.
Yu-Gi-Oh: Every Main Character's Age, Height, And Birthday
With so many Yu-Gi-Oh! series out there now, it's worth taking an in-depth look at each protagonist.
This Trap can be activated any time an opponent declares an attack against the user, causing the destruction of all Attack Position monsters on the adversary's field. While this effect might be considered too slow to be played today, during Yugi's time as a protagonist, it was the ultimate defense. A single Mirror Force could win entire games, which is why it remained banned for a few years for being too overpowered.
6 Exodia, the Forbidden One
Arguably one of the most sought after cards from the Yu-Gi-Oh! franchise, Exodia needs no introduction. Even those who have never indulged in the world created by the late Kazuki Takahashi know about the unbeatable monster who can obliterate opponents. The effect of this impressive creature is quite simple, but extremely effective.
The 18 Best Yu-Gi-Oh! Games, Ranked
Along with a popular anime and an active card game, Yu-Gi-Oh! has also spawned many video games. What are the franchise's best games?
As soon as the user can hold the five pieces of the puzzle in their hand, (the five cards that make Exodia), they win the game. This effect cannot be negated, avoided, or changed, which makes it one of the strongest in the entire game. Exodia is one of the few classic cards still considered strong enough to see occasional play.
5 Palladium Oracle Mahad
Throughout the years, the Dark Magician archetype has been granted several powerful new tools that make it a lot more versatile and reliable to play with. Among the most useful was Palladium Oracle Mahad, who was vital for Yugi to defeat Aigami during the Dark Side of Dimensions movie. This card has three amazing effects that perfectly mesh with the rest of the hero’s deck.
As a Yu-Gi-Oh Player, I Owe Everyone Who Recommended Magic: The Gathering an Apology
After years of dodging constant Magic: The Gathering recommendations to stay loyal to Yu-Gi-Oh, I now realize MTG fans have been right all along.
Whenever this card is drawn from the deck, it can be special summoned to the field without requiring any tributes. If Mahad is ever involved in a battle against a Dark-Type monster, one of the most common in the game, he will have its attack doubled, going from 2500 to a whopping 5000 attack points. Lastly, if he is destroyed, Mahad can summon a Dark Magician from the deck, making it an amazing option to create a perfect deck revolving around this iconic monster, while also having one of the best artworks in the anime.
4 Gandora X – The Dragon of Demolition
Ever since the beginning of the Duelist Kingdom arc, the original adventure that most fans grew up with during the early 2000s, Duel Monsters has been a game where advantage is everything. Usually, the player who can make the most plays and invoke the best monsters onto the field is set to win sooner or later. As such, effects that can remove the advantage from an opponent are quite powerful.
8 Best Yu-Gi-Oh! Manga Covers, Ranked
While Yu-Gi-Oh! would become popular through the anime, it first began as a manga with some extremely eye-catching volume covers.
Gandora X, the evolution of one of Yugi’s most iconic monsters, has an ability that not only helps the user clear the field but also regains control of the duel. When summoned to the field, this dragon can destroy as many cards as possible, dealing damage to the adversary equal to the highest attack removed from play. Gandora also gains this amount as an attack, making this a card so powerful that it had to be banned in Japan for its overuse.
3 The Winged Dragon of Ra
There is no anime fan alive today who has not at least heard of the deities of the Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters’ universe: The Three Egyptian God cards. These beasts, who held within them the power of actual ancient gods, were not only of vital importance for the plot of the series but also a major driving force behind Yugi’s ascent to the top.
Yu-Gi-Oh TCG Makes Controversial Rules Change
The Yu-Gi-Oh TCG has quietly rolled out a major change to the physical card game's rules, causing significant backlash from.fans of the game.
Among them, the Winged Dragon of Ra stands out for being an extremely broken card, with so many effects and protections that are hard to list in simple terms. This deity was unable to be destroyed or targeted by effects, could absorb the power of monsters used to summon it, and could even fuse with the user to gain more power. After its introduction, many fans understood why Yu-Gi-Oh! was praised for its influence on Egyptian mythology.
2 Pot of Greed
Although never introduced as a character during the Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel Monsters era, Pot of Greed is undoubtedly one of the most beloved aspects of this franchise. Fans adore this card for its simple yet devastatingly effective ability. As soon as this Spell card is activated, the user can draw two cards from their deck, with no cost or restriction.
Yu-Gi-Oh: 6 Best Rivals, Ranked
Whether their aim is to push the protagonist to their limit, or just to destroy them in a Duel, these are the most captivating rivals In Yu-Gi-Oh!
This may not seem like much, as two cards might seem harmless for those unfamiliar with the game. However, what separates Yu-Gi-Oh! from other TCGs is the fact that there is no mana or energy system to regulate play. As such, all cards in hand can be activated as long as their conditions are met. This effect is so powerful that this card has been prohibited from use for more than a decade.
1 Card of Sanctity
Sometimes, the Yu-Gi-Oh! anime would introduce a card so broken that when it was time for it to be brought into reality, Konami was forced to change its effects to make it a viable option. Card of Sanctity is, objectively, the most broken of them all. Pot of Greed, on its own, was already an extremely oppressive Spell, giving duelists access to new cards without a cost.
Card of Sanctity, at least in the anime, took this effect and made it ridiculously more powerful. After its activation, both the user and the opponent would be able to draw cards until they held 6 in total in their hand. If used with no more cards in hand, this meant Card of Sanctity would effectively act as 3 Pots of Greed at once, making it Yugi’s most broken card in the entire anime.
