The Witcher 3: Songs of the Past was announced just days ago, and fans are already picking apart the key art and deducing that Geralt's third sword might be the connecting link for the upcoming sequel. CD Projekt Red's return to The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt comes almost a decade after Blood and Wine was released, in preparation for the upcoming fourth entry in the series.
After multiple whispers and rumors that CD Projekt Red was cooking up something new for The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, the Polish studio finally peeled back the curtain on the upcoming Songs of the Past expansion, set to launch in 2027. Details are still sparse about what fans can expect from The Witcher 3: Songs of the Past, but many speculate that CD Projekt Red wouldn't be returning to a decade-old game unless it had something new to say, with a strong focus on Ciri and bridging the gap between Witcher 3 and 4. Fans can expect to hear more about The Witcher 3: Songs of the Past later in 2026, but for now, they'll have to do with following the breadcrumbs CD Projekt Red has left for them, of which there seem to be a few.

The joint CEO of CD Projekt Red shares some information about the upcoming Witcher trilogy, and touches on whether those games will see expansions.
Geralt's Third Sword in The Witcher 3: Songs of the Past Could Be the Key to The Witcher 4
Fans only have a few bits of key art to piece together about the upcoming Songs of the Past expansion, but what's there hints that Geralt has Ciri's silver sword in The Witcher 4, and that story will be what connects the two games. Fans are still scrutinizing every detail they can from the little information they have and cross-referencing Geralt's third sword with Ciri's in the various trailers for The Witcher 4, and so far, it seems like the swords are a close match. Specifically, the red scabbard is currently what fans are pointing to as the giveaway that this is Ciri's sword, along with the ricasso, which seems to have a similar pattern.

Granted, there are some holes and inconsistencies with the current theory that this is Ciri's sword. For starters, fans have already found that the sword in the key art for Songs of the Past looks strikingly similar to the Gesheft sword from Blood and Wine, but the variances seem to be within the same margin as Ciri's sword in the current Witcher 4 promotional material. Additionally, fans already know what Ciri's swords look like due to one of the endings of The Witcher 3, but that could also mean very little, because players can assume a good bit of time has passed, and Ciri could very well have a brand-new sword she calls her own, or this will be a new sword Geralt bestows upon her.
Regardless, it seems like whatever sword Geralt is carrying in the first promo image for Songs of the Past will be an important one. Geralt himself is known for always carrying his two signature swords in The Witcher 3—one for slaying monsters, one for slaying humans—on his back, so to carry a third one would mean that something important is going on. Moreover, Geralt doesn't seem like the type of witcher to come out of retirement for anyone but Ciri, so fans can reasonably expect to see her again in Songs of the Past next year.

Interestingly, CD Projekt Red already gave fans a look at this new sword weeks ago, and no one caught on. On April 30, 2026, CDPR shared some artwork and a poem in celebration of Belleteyn, a notable Gaelic festival. In the image provided, Geralt can be seen sitting next to an exact match for the sword featured on the promotional material for The Witcher 3: Songs of the Past. Unfortunately, fans are still going to have to wait a year to finally figure out what this peculiar sword is all about.
