After the absolute bombshell of action and cinema that was Episode 5 of Witch Hat Atelier, Episode 6, fittingly titled “A Light on a Rainy Day,” brought things down a notch, giving viewers a chance to catch their breath, much like Coco. After the young girl and her fellow apprentices found themselves trapped in a mysterious labyrinth with a hulking dragon guarding the exit, Qifrey appeared at the most opportune moment, defeating the beast with pomp and circumstance and catapulting Witch Hat Atelier to an even higher level of popularity in the process. Audiences hadn’t doubted Bug Films’ ability to adapt Kamome Shirahama’s fantasy manga series for the small screen after the show’s stunning premiere and subsequent intro episodes, but the level of expertise and stunning visuals put on display was nothing short of breathtaking.

To be expected after such an ordeal, Coco quickly flung herself into her studies upon returning to Qifrey’s atelier. Seeing the dangers lurking beyond their comfortable hovel was a wake-up call of sorts, and while the other students have a clear understanding of the basics of magic, Coco is working with a less-than-stunning amount of background knowledge. Qifrey, ever the kind and caring tutor, reminds the girl of her strengths, particularly her creativity and ability to imagine more unique approaches to problems. Witch Hat Atelier Episode 6 also saw the introduction of the fan favorite character Olruggio, who, against his wishes, quickly becomes fond of Coco after seeing firsthand her love and passion for all things magical.

After enjoying a picnic with her mentor and fellow apprentices (with Qifrey showing off his ability to keep the rain at bay using sorcery), Olruggio appeared, threatening to turn Coco in for her connections to forbidden magic. Qifrey not only shoots down this idea, but also reveals that if the young girl has her memories erased, he will do the same, stunning his longtime friend with his devotion to his newest charge. As Episode 6 came to an end, a pounding on the door alerted Qifrey and the others to an emergency, with a carriage trapped due to the heavy rain. Agott demands to come along, promising to be of use, but it’s unclear what awaits in the storm. Thankfully, there isn’t long to wait until viewers find out: Witch Hat Atelier Episode 7, “Who Is Magic For?,” will be available to stream both in Japanese with English subtitles and in English via Crunchyroll on May 11, 2026, at 7 AM PT / 10 AM ET.

From its whimsical animation style and setting to its coming-of-age themes and calming soundtrack, viewers have been stunned by what Bug Films has accomplished with the adaptation, which has been high on fans’ wishlists since it was first announced way back in 2022. As many would likely agree, it was well worth the wait.

The Question of the Week: Who Is Magic For?

Not for Everyone, That’s for Sure

With the upcoming release of Episode 7, Witch Hat Atelier will officially be beyond its halfway point, and many are wondering if a Season 2 announcement is imminent. Given the vast popularity of the series globally and the current state of the manga series, it’s not unthinkable that even more small-screen action is to come. This month, participating bookstores in France are even including a promo pen with the purchase of the collector’s edition of Volume 15, showcasing just how far-reaching and meaningful Shirahama’s work truly is. We’re all Coco, in one way or another, stumbling our way through life and trying to do the best we can.

Fans of the magical fantasy series are particularly attached to Olruggio, and his appearance in the anime adaptation has been met with ample celebration, particularly for his notable accent in the English dub. More action is to come, but interspersed with moments of peace and carefree whimsy, which is something viewers should take to heart. Life doesn’t have to be all chaos and putting out fires–it can also be doodling by firelight and simply watching the rain fall. Only time will tell what Episode 7 has in store, but it will surely be worth a watch, regardless.

Witch Hat Atelier can be streamed on Crunchyroll.
