Since its debut, Witch Hat Atelier has kept fans hungry for more with each passing week. The quality of its animation alone has been enough to transform even the most contrarian critics into believers, and whether the adaptation is leaning into action or quiet moments of reflection, it does so with an amount of confidence that seems impossible for such a young studio. Bug Films hasn't only brought Kamome Shirahama's masterpiece to small screens, but it has amplified its best qualities, from its whimsical worldview to its painfully relatable cast of characters. While the Spring 2026 anime season has been somewhat quiet, for many, Witch Hat Atelier is perfectly capable of carrying it alone, though its days are almost numbered. With only three episodes to go, many are beginning to speculate on how it will end and what the future holds.

In Witch Hat Atelier Episode 9, Qifrey attempted to unravel the mystery behind Coco's endlessly refilling ink bottle, only to come face to face with the raw power of the Brimmed Caps. Left exhausted and without answers, the mysterious teacher continued to hide his goals from his apprentices and the audience as well, as his motives and the sordid events of his past remain unclear. Meanwhile, Coco returned Agott's Sylph Shoes, and in the midst of a deep (and very much needed) conversation between the two, Coco collapses with fever. Qifrey rushed her to see a doctor in Kalhn, meeting Tartah along the way. The young boy still didn't understand the bright light he saw days earlier, and questioning Qifrey about it seemed the right thing to do. Ending on a cliffhanger, fans were left to wonder if Qifrey would show another side of himself this week. As it turns out, this wasn't the case at all. Subterfuge is his strong suit, after all.

This Week’s Episode Proves That Witch Hat Atelier Is Actually Using Magic Behind the Scenes

Even at Its Slowest, Bug Films’ Anime Adaptation Is Effortlessly Gripping

Most of Episode 10, titled "A Promise in Silver," takes place in a hospital room. For any other series, this fact alone could have fans fearing filler, or, at the very least, dry exposition that would leave them wanting. However, Witch Hat Atelier isn't any other series, and this week's installment not only gave ample screen time to what will now likely be a fan favorite character, but also fleshed out more of Coco's thoughts and desires in a way that felt like puzzle pieces fitting together. Thankfully, it's quickly revealed that Coco is suffering from a cold brought on by exhaustion, no doubt due to her desperation to improve her magical skills. Qifrey, who expertly managed to avoid Tartah's question, shows remorse for failing to see that his student was suffering, promising never to let it happen again. Unfortunately, despite wanting to stay by her side as she convalesces, Qifrey is pulled away to help put out a local fire, leaving Coco on her own. Despite putting on a brave face, being alone is the last thing that the young girl wants.

In an unexpected stroke of luck, Tartah managed to leave his hat behind at the hospital, which meant that he was unable to board the ferry home. Returning to retrieve it, he is struck by Coco's worsening illness and is desperate to relieve her pain. Unfortunately, when he begins to search for the right medicine, Tartah finds that none of them are labeled. In a past episode, it was revealed that the boy has Silverwash Syndrome, which causes him to see the world in differing shades of silver. He curses his affliction, which makes it impossible to tell the vials apart. As expected, Coco doesn't hold this against him, and instead teaches him a spell that will make it possible to tell the ingredients apart by reforming them into their original plant forms. Her sickness makes it hard to draw the spell properly; however, Tartah finds that he can do so, with Coco remarking that it was now his special spell. Telling powders and liquids apart without being able to see color is impossible, but telling plants apart? Tartah has studied foliage his whole life. As it turns out, nothing is impossible when magic gets involved.

If you want to do something you can't otherwise do, that's where magic comes in. - Coco

Understandably, Tartah gets a dressing down from the nurse in charge for attempting to take matters into his own hands when medicine should really be handled by a professional. Still, the boy's choice was sound, and by the next morning, Coco is chipper and well again. As Tartah leaves on the ferry, he promises to make Coco her own pen, which he will deliver to her using his own magic. Coco's confidence has a way of rubbing off on those around her, even those who seem to have the hardest hearts. On the way back home, she realizes something: drawing the same spell that froze her mother backwards may be the key to making things right.

Our Limitations Are Often Figments of Our Imagination

When One Door Slams in Your Face, Find Another

Witch Hat Atelier Episode 10 review Image via Bug Films

Tartah was initially introduced as a rather angry young man, with his frustration largely stemming from his own perceived limitations due to his affliction. Not being able to take the easiest and most common route can be beyond frustrating, but demoralizing. It can make a person blind to the other options they have, and sometimes, it takes an outsider to show us that we're capable of more than we could have ever dreamed. With Tartah, Coco has become the teacher, despite the boy having grown up around magic and the young girl barely having dipped a toe into a world she had once only dreamed of joining.

In the midst of his rage and bout of self-hatred, Tartah laments the fact that most people assume everyone sees the world the same way. This ties back into the wonderful way that Witch Hat Atelier views art as magic, and magic as art. To create anything, whether it be a drawing, a piece of music, or a magic spell, is a way to define both who we are and what we can bring to those around us. Tartah once saw himself as doomed to be lesser than the witches he is surrounded by, but he brings his own strengths to the table, able to create pens of incredible quality without batting an eyelash. Personally, I'm a fan of learning foreign languages and have always had a knack for it, but I still use a calculator to do basic math. Our imperfections don't make us less; they make us ourselves. They also make our strong points look even stronger.

The road ahead may be a long one, but it's one worth walking, even if the world is drenched in silver.
