Why Hagrid Was Expelled But Still Allowed to Live at Hogwarts, Explained

Rubeus Hagrid is easily one of the most recognizable characters in the Harry Potter franchise, but his relationship with Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry is more complicated than it first appears. He was expelled from the magical school during his third year of education, his wand was snapped, he was forbidden from practicing magic, and his formal teaching came to an end.

However, Hagrid never truly left the castle behind. By the time Harry Potter arrives at Hogwarts, Hagrid is living on the grounds and working as the school's groundskeeper. The apparent contradiction between his expulsion and him remaining at Hogwarts is easier to understand when fans know more about the situation. It's covered in the Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets book and movie, but the actual flashback lasts roughly two minutes, which means some fans may have forgotten exactly what happened.

Why Was Hagrid Expelled From Hogwarts?

Hagrid was expelled in 1943 after Tom Riddle discovered that he had been keeping an acromantula named Aragog inside the castle. At the time, the Chamber of Secrets had been opened, and several Muggle-born students had been attacked. Riddle deliberately framed Hagrid, knowing that Hagrid's love for magical creatures and his decision to keep Aragog hidden would make him a convincing suspect. Hagrid was eventually caught with Aragog and accused of being responsible for opening the Chamber.

The situation was particularly serious because the attacks had already spread fear throughout Hogwarts. The authorities quickly accepted Riddle's version of events, and Hagrid was expelled. His wand was snapped as part of his punishment, although he secretly kept the pieces and was still able to perform limited magic using his pink umbrella. The real culprit behind the Chamber of Secrets opening, of course, was Tom Riddle, who opened the secret dungeon using the diary containing a fragment of his soul.

Why Didn't Hagrid Leave Hogwarts?

Dumbledore already suspected that Hagrid was innocent when the expulsion happened. Tom Riddle's accusation didn't convince him, and Dumbledore continued to believe that Hagrid had been framed. However, the Hogwarts Headmaster wasn't able to prove Hagrid's innocence at the time, so Hagrid was formally expelled. What Dumbledore could do, though, was help Hagrid stay connected to Hogwarts. After his expulsion, Dumbledore employed Hagrid as the school's gamekeeper, a position that allowed him to live on the grounds and continue caring for the creatures and land around the castle.

This is why Hagrid can still call Hogwarts "home" despite never completing his education there; his expulsion ended his time as a student, but it didn't mean he was permanently banned from the school. His new role saw him maintaining Hogwarts' grounds, looking after its magical creatures, and living in a hut on the edge of the Forbidden Forest. Dumbledore's willingness to give him a home and a job reflects his belief that Hagrid is fundamentally good, even when other authorities had judged him guilty. Sadly, his time at Hogwarts is tested again decades later when the Chamber of Secrets is reopened during Harry, Hermione, and Ron's time there.

The Same Thing Happened to Hagrid Decades Later

In The Chamber of Secrets movie, after students and Filch's cat Mrs. Norris are found petrified, the school is under enormous pressure to provide answers. Lucius Malfoy uses the crisis to pressure the school into suspending Dumbledore, and Hagrid is subsequently taken away again by the Ministry of Magic, under the suspicion he may have conducted the attacks a second time. Even as he's being taken away, Hagrid is mostly concerned with helping Harry, Ron, and Hermione solve the mystery, quietly instructing them to "follow the spiders" through the Forbidden Forest.

Aragog tells Harry that the first victim was a girl who died in the bathroom, leading the Chosen One to Moaning Myrtle. The same bathroom that Moaning Myrtle haunts also houses the entrance to the Chamber, and after learning about the basilisk, Harry discovers the true explanation behind the petrifications and previous deaths: those who looked at the basilisk indirectly – through a mirror or camera lens – was petrified, and those who looked at it directly died. When Harry uses parseltongue to open the Chamber, they finally discover that Ginny Weasley was influenced by Tom Riddle's diary to unleash the Basilisk on the school, which officially got Hagrid off the hook.

Harry's investigation in The Chamber of Secrets solves both a decades-old Hogwarts mystery and the string of attacks that were plaguing the school in the present day. Hagrid's second removal is similar to his initial expulsion; in both cases, he's blamed for something he didn't do, but this time, Harry Potter's skills as a parselmouth finally let Hagrid clear his name.
