When players first encounter the Interstellar Sextant in Rogue Trader, they'll immediately be warned that the pirate ship is already trying to escape. If you want to make the Sextant's crew surrender before it void jumps away, you'll need to bring big guns and enough ship abilities to guarantee that you can deal enough damage before time runs out. It's hard to describe this encounter as anything other than a gear check in Rogue Trader, so if you want to capture the Interstellar Sextant before it disappears into the void, here's what you'll want to bring with you.

How to Capture the Interstellar Sextant in Rogue Trader

You can encounter the Interstellar Sextant relatively early into a campaign, and if you did, you're probably not equipped for this battle yet. The Sextant will more than likely move on the first turn, and since it immediately begins to prep for a void jump, you'll only have two turns to bring its hull down to at least 50%.

The best way to successfully complete this encounter is to do something else and come back once you get the following upgrades for your ship:

  • Silent Running II is crucial for this, as it lets you act before the Interstellar Sextant does.
  • Expeditious Reload lets you fire your cannons twice in one turn, provided your first salvo was made during the acceleration phase (i.e. as long as you shoot while you're on the least-colored cells on your display).
  • Arc Augury will increase the range of your weapons by 2 cells, giving you the opportunity to hit the Interstellar Sextant without
  • Buy some better weapons from the Imperial Navy vendor

Don't forget to set your companions in Rogue Trader to different Posts aboard your ship. This will let you upgrade ship abilities based on who is assigned to which post.

Next, you'll want to have long-ranged weapons on your ship, preferably on your Prow and Dorsal slots. In my playthrough, I was able to disable the Interstellar Sextent on the first turn with a shot from my long-ranged starboard Hecutor Plasma Battery as well as a beam from the Godsbane Lance on my Dorsal slot. You can probably get away with short or medium-ranged Macro-Cannons and Torpedoes, but success will mostly hinge on the three abilities listed above.

The plan is fairly simple:

  1. Get in range of the Sextant (use Arc Augury if necessary),
  2. Blast your target with your cannons.
  3. Move as close as you can to the Sextant, preferably with your port/starboard cannons still facing the target.
  4. Use Expeditious Reload.
  5. Blast the Sextant again.
  6. If the enemy still hasn't surrendered, and you've exhausted all of your attacks, deploy your torpedoes.

Interstellar Sextant Rewards

By capturing the Interstellar Sextent, you'll get some Scrap, trade goods for earning reputation with factions, and a Starbreaker Lance Weapon, which you can equip on your ship's Dorsal weapon slot. This is a medium-ranged beam weapon that deals 32–40 damage per shot. I personally prefer having a dorsal lance weapon because they outrange most cannons, and as far as the Starbreaker is concerned, it'll serve you well up until you get a Godsbane, which is essentially an upgraded version of it that deals more damage.
