One Piece and Naruto are two shonen powerhouses that raised an entire generation of anime fans who once dreamed of becoming a pirate or a ninja someday. While both series check all the boxes of the perfect shonen formula, they obviously tell two very different stories. One is set on the open sea, while the other unfolds in a world ruled by ninjas and hidden villages.

Between One Piece and Naruto, both offer an amazing experience whether you’re flipping through manga pages or streaming episodes, but each excels in different areas. This time, it’s One Piece’s turn to raise the Jolly Roger and prove why its adventure refuses to sink to Naruto’s shinobi action. That said, here are some of the things One Piece does better than Naruto.

One Piece Makes Its World Feel Boundless

One Piece is infamous for its exceptional world-building, which unfolds through the Straw Hat Pirates and their adventures from one island to another. Each island offers something new, from its inhabitants and way of living to its conflict with the other pirates. They also feel culturally different. It’s almost as if each island is a mini world within the vast oceans of the series. For instance, Alabasta is a desert kingdom, whereas Skypiea features a civilization up in the sky.

In other words, the world feels incredibly huge in One Piece, compared to Naruto, which takes place around ninja villages such as Konohagakure, Sunagakure, and Kirigakure, to name a few. Each hidden village even shares the same ninja ranks, jutsu systems, and missions compared to One Piece, which features a more diverse setting.

Rich Power System

The power system in Naruto is centered around chakra, which every shinobi wields to unleash powerful techniques such as Naruto Uzumaki’s signature jutsu, Rasengan, and the Shadow Clone technique. While these techniques are incredibly cool, the power system in One Piece has more variety and is clearly more chaotic.

The devil fruits in the series differ from one user to another. It’s almost as if there’s no end to the bizarre and creative abilities they produce. From Zoan Devil Fruits that let users harness the power of various animals, to Logia Devil Fruits that allow them to manipulate elements and natural forces, there's no end to the variety of powers these devil fruits can produce. Not to mention, the series also gave us Haki and its different types, adding another layer to its already rich power system.

Use of Fillers

It's no secret that One Piece and Naruto contain a lot of fillers or anime-only content. This usually happens because long-running anime adaptations need to include original content to avoid catching up to the manga series. However, between One Piece and Naruto, the former continues to do a much better job bringing fillers among its canon content.

From extending manga chapters into multiple episodes to slowing the pacing and adding extra dialogue to fill time, One Piece opts to do all these instead of adding extra content that feels unrelated or disconnected to the present story arc. While it’s true that the series also features non-canon story arcs, they don’t overstay their welcome at all.

One Piece Doesn't Forget Supporting Characters

Most of the supporting characters in One Piece have their own stories, struggles, and motivations. Eiichiro Oda is a creative genius who consistently finds ways to share the spotlight with these characters, often giving them unique powers and meaningful roles.

At times, they even end up becoming major and crucial characters in the story, proving that Oda rarely forgets about his characters. More impressively, they return to the story in the most unexpected ways possible. This makes the world of One Piece feel far more alive and compelling than Naruto.

On the contrary, many of the supporting characters in Naruto receive little to no importance after they serve their purpose. It’s quite unfortunate, but they fade into the background, receiving less attention even though they don’t deserve it. Meanwhile, the story increasingly focuses on Team 7, especially Naruto Uzumaki and Sasuke Uchiha, leaving others like Tenten, Rock Lee, and Neji in the shadows without proper character development.

Consistent Storyline

One of the biggest criticisms anime fans have against the Naruto series is the late addition of overpowered aliens in the storyline. For them, the Otsutsuki Clan ruined the ending of the series, with Kaguya appearing out of nowhere without proper foreshadowing, buildup, and introduction. Instead of the series ending with a powerful shinobi like Madara or Obito Uchiha as the ultimate villain, they receive an out-of-this-world entity, making the storyline inconsistent.

One Piece, on the other hand, has always been consistent with its world and power scaling. The Straw Hat Pirates face off against fellow pirates, the World Government, and other powerful foes, all of whom fit naturally into the story’s established world and rules.

Humor Placement

Fans enjoy One Piece because of its incredible humor, in addition to the adventure and intense fights happening in the series. Most characters in One Piece have a relatable sense of humor, and even those who don’t are often the butt of jokes, creating unforgettable comedic moments. Humor can also appear even during battles, without ever diminishing the stakes.

In Naruto, however, the series often includes comedic moments only during filler episodes or brief village moments. The series needs to pause the humor whenever Naruto Uzumaki finds himself in dangerous situations, making comedy feel intermittent. One Piece does the exact opposite, as humor naturally happens in the main plot.

Overall Atmosphere

In general, the Naruto series has a heavier and darker atmosphere than One Piece, mostly because of its themes of revenge, loss, and legacy. There’s also a lot of tension, especially in Naruto Shippuden, where a lot of character deaths happen and village-shattering conflicts unfold, giving little to no room for levity.

Meanwhile, One Piece has a better atmosphere, balancing high-stakes battles with humor and lighthearted moments between the characters. Even during intense arcs, the series never misses an opportunity to make fun of its characters, making the world feel alive without ever undercutting the stakes.
