In a continuation of a rather turbulent year for Tekken 8, 20-year Bandai Namco veteran and director of the 3D fighter itself, Kouhei Ikeda, has announced his departure from the studio. Tekken 8 continues to struggle against the current as multiple seasons of the game have missed the mark among fans, and Bandai Namco has, unfortunately, been turning over the franchise's key pillars of development.

While Tekken 8 may have started off fairly strong, the past couple of years have not been kind to the fighter. Fans have repeatedly complained about the game's awkward balance and Rage Arts mechanic, which have made Tekken 8 go from a once-high-level competitive experience to a more mainstream, "watered down" one, according to some diehard fans in the community. Recent seasons have also been quite poorly received, with Season 3 even leading to a whole Tekken 8 review bomb in March 2026, as fans feel like they are not being heard. On top of that, the game has worryingly started shedding its longtime developers and faces of the company.

Bandai Namco reveals a new DLC character coming to Tekken 8, and they're the fourth and final entrant in Season 3 of the fighting game.

Kohei Ikeda Announces Departure from Tekken 8 in a Letter to the Community

As announced on Twitter on June 1, 2026, Kohei Ikeda has officially left Bandai Namco, leaving behind a 20-year legacy and a letter expressing his joy as Game Director of Tekken 7 and 8, which he has been spearheading for over a decade now. Kohei Ikeda also talks about how he had always dreamt of working at Bandai Namco and how getting in on Soul Calibur 4 early in his career and continuing through his work on Tekken 8 has been one of his most cherished life experiences. As of now, Ikeda has not yet detailed why he is another longtime developer leaving Tekken 8, but he does offer kind words and a passing of the baton to the developers still working hard to get the game in better shape.

Kohei Ikeda's exit from Bandai Namco marks the third developer to leave the studio in less than a year. The first to go was producer Yohei Shimbori in September 2025, who said a quick farewell on Twitter before leaving the company. However, in a surprise shock in December 2025, franchise icon Katsuhiro Harada announced his own departure from the studio after an impressive 30 years with the series. Following his announcement of retirement from the Tekken series, Harada has announced a new studio with former SNK developers, but it is currently unknown whether Ikeda or Shimbori will follow him there.

Fan reactions to this recent series of departures have been a mixed bag, if not somber overall, especially because these are the faces fans associate with the Tekken franchise. With Harada's departure, fans felt as if the soul of Tekken had left the franchise and that the series might not be the same again; however, Ikeda's passing of the baton has fans curious about where Tekken 8 goes from here, given that Ikeda was the visionary behind a lot of problems that fans currently have with the game. With Tekken 8 Season 3 promising to fix prior missteps, fans will have to wait and see how the game changes from here.

As depressing as it is to see longtime developers of fan favorite franchises depart their games for reasons unknown, it's not all doom and gloom for Tekken 8. In fact, it's quite the opposite. Evo Japan 2026 starts in late June and will be full of massive games that still dominate the fighting game scene, lumping Tekken 8 and all of its current problems with the likes of Street Fighter 6 and Guilty Gear Strive on a massive stage. Things may be tough for Tekken right now, but that doesn't mean it isn't still one of the most-watched and most-played fighting games at very high levels.
