The Scanner is a basic tool in Subnautica 2 used to scan and document every plant, creature, and structure in the game in order to unlock new blueprints, data entries, and item recipes. The Scanner is one of the two Basic Tools that players will have to craft at the very start of the game (the other being the Survival Multitool). Here is how to do it.

How to Craft a Scanner in Subnautica 2

In Subnautica 2, players can build a Scanner at any Fabricator using the following crafting materials.

  • Titanium x2
  • Quartz x2
  • Basic Battery x1

Titanium

You can farm Tiatinum in the area surrounding the Lifepod on the ocean floor, within underground caves, and inside coral structures. It is the most abundantly available ore in Subnautica 2 and you should have no problem finding some to build the Scanner.

You can also convert Metal Salvage into Salvaged Titanium at the Fabricator, which counts as the same thing as ores.

Quartz

In the early game, the easiest place where you can locate Quartz is within Coral Domes, the large, circular formations of orange coral that are commonplace in the shallow waters surrounding the Lifepod.

The insides of these corals always contain a few deposits of Quartz, and the big ones contain dozens, more than enough to fill your inventory completely. One of these structures is located just 30m east of the Lifepod.

Basic Battery

The Basic Battery can be crafted at a Fabricator using the following recipe:

  • Copper x2
  • Acidic Raion Pouch x1

You can find Copper lining the walls of underground caves, whereas Acidic Raion Pouches can be obtained by harvesting the Acid Raions, the purple wrinkled brain-like plants that grow in caves as well. Both can be found within a 30m range of the Lifepod, in the shallow waters biome.

How to Recharge Scanner in Subnautica 2

The Scanner has a finite charge, and each time you use it to scan something, a little of that charge depletes. The current charge value of your Scanner (and other powered tools) will be displayed on the quick slots bar above the item icon.

To recharge a Scanner, you’ll need a power source to do the recharging, and the most readily available power source in the early game is the Basic Battery. Yes, the same Basic Battery you used to build the Scanner in the first place. Here’s how this works:

  1. Place a charged Basic Battery in your inventory.
  2. Equip the Scanner in one of the quick slots.
  3. Press R to bring up the recharge menu.
  4. Press Left-Click to “Load” the Basic Battery’s charge in your Scanner.

After it is used, the Basic Battery will be drained of its charge, and it can be recharged again at a Battery Terminal.
