Stranger Than Heaven officially has a release date: January 15, 2027. The long-awaited announcement arrived in the form of a brand-new trailer that also revealed something much more unexpected than a January launch: Tupac Shakur as a Stranger Than Heaven character.
Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio has long been comfortable bringing famous entertainers to its games, with its next big-budget project already providing a recent example with Snoop Dogg. That said, Snoop Dogg's involvement in Stranger Than Heaven was teased years in advance by both the musician and the developer itself, making it far less of a shock than what RGG and Sega just showed at Summer Game Fest.
Stranger Than Heaven Really Wants You to Think It's Not a Like a Dragon Game
Stranger Than Heaven may not technically be a Like a Dragon game, but it seems that's just a formality based on connections teased recently.
Stranger Than Heaven’s New Trailer Puts A Strange Twist On RGG’s Celebrity Cameo Tradition
According to Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio, Tupac Shakur's likeness was recreated for Stranger Than Heaven in cooperation with Amaru Entertainment, which manages the late rapper's estate. The developer also clarified that the character model was made using archival footage and photos rather than AI, a detail that may help explain why Sega addressed the unusual "casting" choice so directly alongside the January 15 release date announcement. Surprise factor aside, the fact that Tupac will be dead for over 30 years by the time Stranger Than Heaven hits the market certainly makes this inclusion stand out from the typical Yakuza / Like a Dragon celebrity fare.
Some Fans Are Blaming Snoop Dogg for Tupac Being Dragged Out of His Grave. (Again)
The reveal quickly became one of the more divisive talking points from the opening day of Summer Game Fest 2026. Some fans embraced the absurdity of seeing Tupac appear in an RGG crime epic spanning half a century, while others questioned Shakur's estate for approving the cameo. The backlash has also pulled Snoop Dogg deeper into the story because of his own Stranger Than Heaven role, with some online critics treating him as the link between the game's two rap-world cameos. That criticism is sharpened by old baggage: Snoop Dogg was part of Dr. Dre's infamous 2012 Coachella set that brought a digital Tupac onto the stage, stirring significant fan controversy in the process. While that helps explain why some netizens are now blaming Snoop Dogg for RGG's Tupac stunt, there are currently no definitive indications that the musician was indeed the primary influence pushing for the polarizing digital cameo.
Snoop Dogg's own Stranger Than Heaven role, meanwhile, has already been outlined in much more detail. He plays Orpheus, a smuggler who encounters protagonist Makoto Daito near the start of the game after Makoto attempts to reach Japan. Orpheus appears to help set the story in motion, even if he only ends up helping Makoto inadvertently. Snoop Dogg's son, Cordell Broadus, is part of the Stranger Than Heaven cast as well.

Although the SGF 2026 trailer ran just over a minute, Stranger Than Heaven has already received a lengthy showcase this spring. The April 30 presentation featured over half an hour of new footage from the upcoming Yakuza prequel, including a scene that appears to tease at least one boss fight with Snoop Dogg's character.
