This article contains spoilers for Star Wars: Maul - Shadow Lord, Season 1, Episodes 1-6, currently streaming on Disney+.One of Star Wars' most popular villains, Maul, started as Darth Sidious' apprentice in Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace, but his apparent death at the end of the film seemed like the end of his story. However, Maul's popularity with fans led to his survival and a far more complicated character arc, which sees Maul become a major player in the galaxy's underworld.

Now, Maul has returned for Star Wars: Maul - Shadow Lord. The series focuses on Maul rebuilding his criminal empire while seeking vengeance on everyone who has betrayed him. However, some fans may be unsure where this story fits within the Star Wars franchise's timeline. The series takes place after the fall of the Republic when the Empire was consolidating their power. This choice to focus on Maul's story and Janix City provides a microcosm of the Empire and the criminal underworld's effects on ordinary people throughout the galaxy.

Star Wars: Maul - Shadow Lord Season 1, Episode 1 Is much better than fans expected and is exactly what the franchise needed in terms of series.

Star Wars: Maul - Shadow Lord Takes Place Near the Beginning of the Empire

There has been some confusion over exactly when Star Wars: Maul - Shadow Lord takes place. At Star Wars: Celebration Japan in 2025, Sam Witwer initially explained that the series takes place "about a year after The Clone Wars." However, the timeline actually is a little bit fuzzier. However, in the official teaser trailer announcement and poster reveal on starwars.com, the series is stated to take place "a few short years after Order 66," which is a little bit later in the timeline.

This change places Star Wars: Maul - Shadow Lord a little bit after Star Wars: The Bad Batch in the timeline, though there may be a some overlap. While Star Wars: The Bad Batch focused on the immediate aftermath of the Empire's rise, Star Wars: Maul - Shadow Lord instead focuses on the period of uncertainty after the Empire had some time to settle in, but before the wider galaxy knew the true depth of cruelty the Empire was capable of.

Star Wars: Maul - Shadow Lord's Time Period Heightens the Stakes

Star Wars: Maul - Shadow Lord's time period is an important factor in all of the character's journeys. For Maul, he has been biding his time plotting his revenge against the syndicates that betrayed him. The longer time period between Maul's capture on Mandalore and his revenge highlights Maul's calculating nature. Rather than fully acting on impulse, the series shows that Maul is a far more clever and intelligent player in the galaxy, trying to strike at the opportune moment for maximum effect rather than focusing on smaller, immediate victories.

Maul has also had time to see the full effects of the eradication of the Jedi as well as witness the rise of the Inquisitors. This experience makes his desire for an apprentice make complete sense. Maul wants to gather his own power to eventually enact vengeance on Darth Sidious, but he also seeks connection with other force users to be less alone in the galaxy. His search for an apprentice in Star Wars: Maul - Shadow Lord foreshadows his interest in recruiting Ezra Bridger later in Star Wars: Rebels and Maul's ultimate desire to not be alone.

The time between Order 66 and the series also has a significant impact on Padawan Devon Izara. She has lost everything she has ever known and faced the deaths of most of her friends and mentors, with the exception of Jedi Master Eeko-Dio Daki. She has now had to endure years of being in hiding, barely scraping by, as she watches the Empire extend its grip throughout the galaxy. This time in hiding and Devon's frustration with their current inaction are the perfect way for Maul to begin manipulating her toward his side. While Devon begins the series resistant to Maul's influence, his words clearly have an effect on her as the situation in Janix City becomes more dire.

Star Wars: Every Lightsaber Color, Explained

Lightsabers are easily the most popular piece of Star Wars technology. They are even further defined by their colors with various meanings.

The setting itself, Janix City, is the element of Star Wars: Maul - Shadow Lord most affected by the time period. At the beginning of the series, the planet Janix has mostly gone under the Empire's radar, which is why many of the criminal underworld's biggest players use Janix City as an important port in their operations. While some people in Janix City, like Captain Brander Lawson and Cheif Klyce, are suspicious of the Empire and desperately work to keep the Empire from coming to Janix.

However, for the majority of Janix's population, the Empire is not really a fully known quantity. This uncertainty is best embodied by 2B0T, also known as Two Boots, Lawson's partner on the force. Two Boots cannot see the threat that the Empire imposes because he simply does not have enough data to make a conclusion. This leads to Two Boots naively believing that the Empire will do as they say and leave Janix after Maul is captured.

This overall attitude is reflected in the rest of the citizens of Janix. While the Empire has been violently taking over other planets and committing genocide, they only have the information they have gathered from the news, which presents a far more sterilized view of the Empire's actions. Their lives have been mostly unchanged, as seen by the ordinary activities like Rylee Lawson's shockball matches. Thus, at the beginning of Episode 5, "Inquisition," when the Imperial forces march on Janix City, it's a shock to most people who don't realize just how much their lives are about to change.

Overall, Star Wars: Maul - Shadow Lord is a little further in the Empire's reign than many other works depicting the Empire's rise. Still, it is early enough that most people in the galaxy are unaware of the true depths of Emperor Palpatine's cruelty and violence on his quest for control. Thus, Star Wars: Maul - Shadow Lord highlights a crucial moment in Maul's history as well as providing a snapshot on a smaller scale of how the Empire affected ordinary people in a galaxy far, far away.
