In a somewhat surprising Nintendo Direct this week that focused on one of the company's iconic heroes, Fox McCloud, and his gang of pilot friends, we were treated to an announcement of Star Fox, a Switch 2 remake of the N64 title, which itself is a sort of remake/ successor to Star Fox on the SNES. Since it's been ten years since we've gotten a new Star Fox game, there are a lot of questions surrounding this upcoming release.

Some of the burning questions that Nintendo enthusiasts have include the price of this first-party title, whether it's multiplayer, whether it's a remake or a sequel, and what's exactly new compared to the N64 title. Well, this article will answer all these questions (and more!). Let's get into it.

Star Fox Switch 2: Release Date and Price Explained

The most important thing about Star Fox that people want to know about is the price. Is this going to be as expensive as Mario Kart World and Donkey Kong Bananza? Well, the answer is no. Since this seems to be a "smaller" game for Nintendo, likely being cheaper to produce than the two games we mentioned, the company is offering it at a slightly lower price.

The digital edition of Star Fox will cost $49.99, and the physical edition will cost $59.99. Nintendo announced recently that it would offer digital first-party Switch 2 games at a lower price than their physical counterpart, and Yoshi and the Mysterious Book is the first instance of this price split.

Is Star Fox for Switch 2 a Remake or a Sequel?

Star Fox for Switch 2 is essentially a souped-up remake of the Nintendo 64 title. You'll get to visit all the same stages and fight the same bosses, but there's a lot more added to the package. There are all-new cutscenes with full voice acting, an online multiplayer mode, new challenges and difficulty modes to push players to replay the game over and over, and, of course, a huge visual overhaul.

As mentioned before, one of the biggest additions to Star Fox is the new Battle Mode. You can connect online and play 4x4 dogfights with two teams split into Team Star Fox and Team Star Wolf. There are three maps to choose from, with each one offering a different gameplay scenario. On Sector Y, you'll have to pick up pieces of cargo and drop them off at designated locations; on Fichina, you'll need to fly around and collect energy crystals; and then, on Corneria, you'll need to secure zones with your team.

It's also worth noting that Star Fox supports GameShare. So, if you own the game on Switch 2, you can share the game with up to three friends and play with them without them having to own the game themselves. It also works if they only have a Switch 1 or a Switch Lite. You can also play through the campaign with two players by splitting the Joy-Con in half, so one player controls the movement of the Arwing and the second player controls the shooting.
