ReZero: Subaru’s 7 Worst Deaths, Ranked

Subaru Natsuki is lucky enough to be isekai’d in Re:Zero, but it goes without saying that he’s unlucky to experience death in so many forms thanks to his mysterious Return by Death ability. This isekai skill is unique to Subaru, serving as a cheat skill that allows him to respawn from a certain period in the past to change the future in his favor.

Throughout Re:Zero, Subaru experiences the worst deaths in an isekai anime that’s both physically and psychologically agonizing. From being decapitated and eaten alive to getting frozen to death, Subaru continues to endure the endless cycle of life and death that pushes his mind and body to the absolute limit.

Reinhard Accidentally Cuts Subaru in Half

Reinhard is one of Subaru’s best friends in Re:Zero and is widely recognized as one of the most OP characters in the series since he’s the current Sword Saint in Lugunica. So, when Subaru asks Reinhard for help, he gladly obliges to take down Sirius by himself.

However, Reinhard’s heroic deed went from a confident rescue into a tragic situation that ended up killing Subaru. With one slash, Reinhard splits Sirius’ body into two. However, Sirius was able to transfer the physical damage to all the people surrounding them with her ability, including Subaru. As Subaru’s lifeless body lies on the ground, Reinhard is left frozen, struck by the weight of what just happened.

Subaru Bleeds to Death

While some anime characters wish to be with their loved ones when death comes for them, Subaru prefers to forget about his final moments with Emilia in Re: Zero Season 2. Though Subaru has always dreamed of resting in Emilia’s lap before he dies, he never thought that it would happen in the worst way possible.

After sustaining life-threatening wounds from the Great Rabbit, Subaru finds himself in Emilia’s lap, slowly dying because of blood loss. However, the Emilia holding his head isn’t the one he knows and loves, but someone who has lost her sanity, turning what should have been a comforting moment into something deeply unsettling for Subaru.

Elsa Disembowels Subaru

Subaru’s first death at the hands of Elsa in Re:Zero Season 1 is less violent than his other deaths, but what makes it terrifying is the fear of the unknown, of not understanding why he’s dying, and the painful realization of an unremarkable life. He was only helping Emilia find her missing insignia, but he met a sudden, horrifying end in the isekai world, where he thought he could start over.

Moreover, Subaru also witnessed Emilia’s death, making the experience even more horrible. What he thought was a heroic act of helping Emilia escalate into a nightmare he would never forget. Plus, Subaru went on to experience his abdomen being cut again by Elsa despite anticipating her movements.

Puck Decapitates Subaru

Puck is usually friendly to Subaru. In fact, they love to hang out and spend time with each other as if they have been acquainted for a very long time. However, the artificial spirit doesn’t mess around when it comes to Emilia, and the moment her safety is being threatened, his gentle nature vanishes in an instant and is replaced by a cold, vicious personality that even Subaru finds terrifying.

So, when Puck learns about Emilia’s death in Re:Zero Season 1, he puts the blame on Subaru, freezing him in the process before decapitating him. While it’s a quick death, seeing Subaru in tears while holding Rem adds another layer of despair as he realizes there’s nothing he can do to flip the situation around but die again.

Rem Tortures Subaru and Ends His Life

Before Subaru earned Rem's complete trust and loyalty, he had to die in her presence twice, trapped in the horrors of Margrave Mathers’ mansion. While Subaru’s first death happened in his sleep, and the second one took place in the corridors of the mansion, the third one struck in an even more desperate moment when he learned about Rem's betrayal.

Armed with a mace, Rem tortured Subaru, forcing him to admit that he’s a spy from another faction aiming for the royal crown. Rem’s brutal interrogations break Subaru down, bringing him to tears as he struggles to defend himself. He felt so hopeless, refuting Rem’s accusations with no chance of convincing her. In the end, Rem swiftly kills him to finally end his suffering.

Sirius Hangs Subaru

Subaru experiences yet another brutal death at the hands of Sirius, the Sin Archbishop of Wrath, who can synchronize emotions, senses, and physical damage with anyone caught in her range. It’s a lethal ability that Subaru experienced with Lusbel when Sirius caught them in the watchtower together.

Sirius quickly used the chain to tie around Subaru’s neck, linking Lusbel’s fear with him in the process. The same goes with Lusbel, who shares the sensation of Subaru’s physical injuries. Soon after, Sirius hangs Subaru, who slowly dies gasping for air, while his thoughts spiral into terror. Lusbel, on the other hand, succumbs to absolute fear and shock as he dies with Subaru.

The Great Rabbit Devours Subaru Alive

Rabbits are cute, but the rabbits in Re:Zero are lethal killers that sate their intense appetite by eating anyone or anything they come across. They may look like weak isekai monsters, but when their numbers gather, it’s safe to assume that their target will be devoured without leaving any body parts, including bones, behind. It’s best to avoid them, but it might be too late to run away from them.

That’s what happens to Subaru in Re:Zero Season 2, where he finds himself surrounded by countless rabbits who seem harmless at first but later devour him alive. Every rabbit jumped to taste Subaru’s flesh, ripping him apart while he remained fully conscious and unable to escape. The scene that follows is pure nightmare fuel, as the rabbits take their time eating his hands, legs, and more. Yikes!
