The archive of the Great Pleiades Library officially welcomes Subaru and his friends in Re:Zero Season 4 episode 5. The massive archive is filled with books titled after the names of dead people in the fantasy world. Reading the contents of the books is near-impossible, as the letters move constantly, which Beatrice describes as a form of cognitive obstruction.

Surprisingly, Subaru and Julius end up reliving the lives and memories of the deceased through the books they randomly pick. One of them belongs to Typhon, the Witch of Pride, whose memories Subaru recognizes all too well. Despite uncovering this strange phenomenon, Subaru still has no idea which book they’re actually searching for.

With no clear direction to guide them, Subaru and Meili take a moment to talk to each other. Subaru learns that Meili is an orphan, raised by witchbeasts in the middle of the forest. The conversation takes a turn when Meili questions Subaru about the archive, how the Books of the Dead continue to multiply, and whether it’s possible that if Subaru were to die, a new book of his life would immediately appear. This unsettling inquiry piques Subaru’s curiosity, leaving him uneasy as the implications of the Pleiades Archive slowly sink in.

Shaula remains an unpredictable character in Re:Zero Season 4, acting as the keeper of the Pleiades Library. So far, her actions toward Subaru and his friends have been highly suspicious, raising more questions about her real intentions and whether she’s an ally or a foe.

Amid the growing uncertainty, Anastasia begins to take notice of the situation and figures out that Shaula follows hidden rules inside the library. Shaula confirms this speculation and bluntly tells everyone that she will not hesitate to transform into a ruthless killing machine as soon as Subaru and the others violate the rules of the library. Regardless of Shaula’s promise to Subaru not to harm anyone, her contract with Flugel ultimately takes precedence.

That said, the rules in the Great Pleiades Library are as follows:

  1. It’s forbidden to leave the Great Pleiades Library unless Subaru and the others pass the exams and reach the first floor.
  2. If anyone from Subaru’s team violates the rules, Shaula will kill them instantly.
  3. Disrespecting the archive is strictly forbidden.
  4. Any action intended to damage the Great Pleiades Library is forbidden.

Now that the rules are clear, Subaru and the others become far more cautious about how they move around the library and act toward Shaula. With this, it’s time for Subaru to forget the library at the moment and proceed to the next trial to move forward. Time is of essence, and every delay only brings new risks and uncertainties.

And speaking of the second trial, Subaru finds himself in yet another white room. This time, instead of a monolith, a lone sword invites Subaru to pull it free. Naturally, Subaru pulls the sword to officially begin the second exam. Just like that, the white room shifts into a vast green meadow, and a mysterious man suddenly appears before them.

This mysterious man is none other than Reid Astrea, the powerful Sword Saint, whom Shaula is incredibly afraid of. Unlike Reinhard Van Astrea, Reid is hot-headed, exuding an intimidating presence. To pass the second trial, Julius volunteers to fight Reid, while Subaru and the others stay behind. The question now is whether Julius truly has the strength to stand against and overpower Reid Astrea. For now, the answer remains uncertain in Re:Zero Season 4.
