Resident Evil Requiem's director has teased an upcoming mini-game in addition to the game's story DLC, along with other post-launch support for the title. Resident Evil Requiem's dual-protagonist structure successfully blends survival horror through newcomer Grace Ashcroft's segments with more action-driven gameplay featuring fan-favorite Leon S. Kennedy.

The long-running franchise has mostly stayed true to its roots as a single-player survival horror experience for nearly three decades. While often on the shorter side, its campaigns are designed with replayability in mind, encouraging repeat playthroughs through unlockables and alternate scenarios. Aside from that, post-launch content like story expansions and mini-games are also staples of the franchise. One example is the Mercenaries mode rumored to return to Resident Evil Requiem, a popular recurring arena shooter that was first introduced in Resident Evil 3: Nemesis.

Resident Evil Requiem’s Mini-Game Could Arrive in May

The director of Resident Evil Requiem and a producer for Capcom hinted that a mini-game for the title might arrive in May. In a recent interview translated from Denfaminico Gamer with Koshi Nakanishi and Masato Kumazawa, the developers talked about the game's post-launch content. Resident Evil Requiem's director, Nakanishi, says that the mini-game will be "based on the battles in the main game." He added that the mini-game is for players who have already cleared the main story and still "haven't had enough fun." The director thinks that these players will be able to enjoy the upcoming mini-game and that they should "sharpen your tomahawk and wait."

Producer Kumazawa reiterated that the mini-game is unlocked after beating the main story. "If you're planning to play it, clearing the main story during Golden Week would be just right for you." Golden Week is Japan's longest vacation period from April 29 to May 5, as the country celebrates multiple public holidays. From his comments, the mini-game will come out in May, giving players ample time to finish Resident Evil Requiem in preparation for the post-launch content.

With the story DLC officially locked in and under development, the mini-game is highly likely to be the beloved Mercenaries mode. The fast-paced, wave-based arena shooter would fit right at home with Leon's action move-set, as he roundhouse kicks monstrosities and parries incoming rockets.

If the mini-game does turn out to be the latest version of Mercenaries, this would play a vital role in sustaining Resident Evil Requiem's interest post campaign. Even though RE9 nearly doubled the all-time peak of Resident Evil 4, Leon's mission through rural Spain still has more current players, owing to its highly replayable campaign and fun Mercenaries mode. A strong mini-game could bridge that gap, giving Capcom's latest entry a gameplay mode that has helped older entries maintain a steady player base long after release.
