Capcom opened Summer Game Fest 2026 with the reveal of the long-rumored Resident Evil Code: Veronica remake. Capcom has found great success remaking its Resident Evil games over the years, with the 2002 Resident Evil remake generally considered one of the best horror games ever made. In 2019, Capcom released a remake of Resident Evil 2 that earned even higher praise, and followed that up with remakes of Resident Evil 3 and 4. A Resident Evil Code: Veronica remake is something fans have been asking to see for years, and now we know with 100% certainty that it's finally on the way.
Like previous Resident Evil remakes, the Resident Evil Code: Veronica remake, titled Resident Evil: Veronica, will retain many elements of the game it's remaking, but updating everything to meet expectations of a modern audience. The debut trailer was surprisingly revealing, confirming some exciting details about what Resident Evil: Veronica will have in store when it releases in 2027 for PC, PS5, Switch 2, and Xbox Series X/S.
Resident Evil Insider Has Bad News for RE1 Fans
Gamers who've been hopeful for a remake of the original 1996 Resident Evil may have to wait much longer than anticipated, according to an insider.
Resident Evil Code Veronica Remake Trailer
The Resident Evil: Veronica trailer opened with protagonist Claire Redfield visiting an older woman in France. This segment used a first-person perspective, seemingly confirming that Resident Evil: Veronica will once again let players choose between first- and third-person, ala Resident Evil Requiem. It also confirms that Resident Evil: Veronica will expand on the opening from the original game, which saw Claire Redfield invade Umbrella. Based on the trailer, it appears Claire may be getting kidnapped before her attack on Umbrella, speeding up her trip to Rockfort Island where the bulk of the story takes place.

The rest of the trailer offered brief glimpses of reimagined areas from the original game. Fans can get a look at the villainous Alfred Ashford, though it remains to be seen if he will be as campy as he was in the OG game. Resident Evil: The Darkside Chronicles somewhat sanitized Ashford and Claire's obnoxious friend Steve Burnside quite a bit, so it's possible that Veronica will do the same, though that remains to be seen. There's still a lot left to be revealed about Resident Evil: Veronica and the direction it's going to take, but the trailer does suggest it will stick to the darker tone used in the recent remakes.
The Resident Evil 4 remake definitely featured a darker tone than the original, and it does seem like Resident Evil: Veronica is following in its footsteps. Future trailers from Capcom will shed more light on what fans can expect from Resident Evil: Veronica, but fans will have to wait until they can play the game for themselves when it launches next year. Leaks suggest that it will be an early 2027 game, but fans should stay tuned for more information.
