In the Resident Evil 4 remake's Chapter 4, after killing the annoying Loch Ness Monster-like Del Lago in the Lake, you'll come across the Mural Cave gate, which requires solving two Shrine puzzles.
The solutions to both Lake puzzles are actually quite simple. All you need to do is explore the cave and find six symbols painted on the walls with the Resident Evil 4 remake's signature yellow paint. There's no specific order to follow, and the symbols aren't randomized. If you want to save time, you can simply use the solutions in this guide.
Resident Evil 4 Remake: All Electronic Lock Power Puzzles Solutions on All Difficulties
Here's everything you need to know to solve the difficult Electronic Lock puzzles that are in the Resident Evil 4 remake on Professional difficulty.
Updated on May 31, 2026, by Mohsen Baqery: The Lake puzzles aren't designed to take up much of the player's time, serving more as a transition to the next area than a gate protecting valuable treasure. With that in mind, we've updated this guide to present the solutions to all cave puzzles in the Lake area in the most digestible and skimmable format possible, helping players get through this section quickly.
Lake Puzzle #1: Large Cave Shrine Solution

- Imagine the pressure plate is a clock with 8 buttons.
- Now, assume the topmost one is #1, and the others are numbered #2 to #8 clockwise.
- So, you have an 8-digit clock that you need to press three buttons on to unlock the door.
- Here are the ones you need to press: #2, #5, and #8 in no specific order.
Although the location of each door is marked on Leon's map and players are free to head to either door first, the closest is located off a dock just south of the Mural Cave. Players should head there first, docking their boat and continuing along the linear pathway until they reach a ladder. There are an array of enemies in this area, and it's recommended that players take them out first before solving the puzzle and opening the gate.
After players climb the ladder and proceed down the pathway, they will notice a bright neon-yellow painted symbol splattered on a nearby wall. Players need to make note of this symbol and then continue until they reach an area with a locked door and a mechanism. Players should look at the door and spin 180 degrees, where they will spot yellow paint on two rock pillars nearby.
By standing in front of the pillars with both in view, players can turn the camera until the pillars "line up" to get the second symbol. The last symbol is located to the left of the locked door, down a nearby ladder. As soon as players drop off the ledge, they can turn to the right to see the symbol on the wall. Once players have all three symbols, they should climb back up the ladder and head to the mechanism.
To unlock the door, players simply need to press the three symbols that match the paintings on the wall (it doesn't matter what order). Once the lock opens, players can head into the door and snag the Apostate's Head Key Item before heading back down to the dock, hopping into the boat, and traveling north towards the next map marker.
Lake Puzzle #2: Small Cave Shrine Solution

- Once again, imagine the pressure plate as an eight-button clock, with the topmost button labeled #1 and the rest numbered clockwise through #8.
- To unlock the door, press the following three buttons in any order: #4, #6, and #7.
The second location offers a similar puzzle, but the symbols require a little more interpretation than the first one. Players should once again clear the enemies from the area, being sure to be careful, as this particular spot is very close quarters. There are three symbols to find here, too, and the first one can be spotted down the pathway to the left of the barred door, on the wall near the ladder.
Players should then climb up the ladder and look out near the cave. To see this entire symbol, players need to line themselves up with the small chunk of wall (with a bit of paint on it) with the paint stretching out onto the roof of the cave. This particular symbol is turned sideways and needs to be rotated 90 degrees to the left. The final symbol is located at the back of the structure upstairs and can be spotted partially on the wood wall and partially on the cave wall outside the nearby window.
Once players have all the symbols, they can head back down to the door and input the symbols into the mechanism. Inside, they'll find another statue head and, with both key items in hand, they can head back to the Mural Cave and use the statue heads on the open palms to unlock access to the Church Key.

If you ask me, the Lake puzzles are much easier than the Resident Evil 4 remake's Hexagon puzzle, which is also found in the Lake area. Still, if you're anything like me and initially overlooked the yellow-painted symbols on the cave walls, figuring out which buttons to press can be a little frustrating. Hopefully, this guide helped you save some time and get through the Lake section without any unnecessary trial and error.
