Red Dead Redemption: All Outfits (& How to Unlock Them)

In the original Red Dead Redemption, and in the remasters, Outfits are a core part of the game that change how John Marston looks, can grant special effects, and contribute to 100% completion. In total, there are eighteen Outfits you can earn and wear in the base game, but depending on which of these Red Dead Redemption Outfits that you want to unlock, there may be quite lengthy steps.

Before you can unlock almost all Red Dead Redemption outfits, you must first reveal them in your Outfits tab. Then, the Scraps that you must complete to unlock the now-revealed Outfit will appear. Though some Outfits only have one requirement to unlock them for wear, most Outfits in Red Dead Redemption require John Marston to complete a series of challenges before becoming equippable.

There is a good chance that thousands of newcomers have spent the last few weeks playing through John Marston's story, especially since the game is available on PS Plus Extra. If you are one of these folks, you might be wondering if Outfits are worth the effort. So, let's discuss that.

Are Outfits Worth Unlocking In Red Dead Redemption?

Just because something is in a game doesn't mean it is worth doing. In Red Dead Redemption, Outfits are optional content that the campaign does not push on you, and it is up to the player to decide if they want to put in the work. Once you reveal an Outfit, you can start working on unlocking it by completing all of its scrap requirements, and it can take a while to collect everything. RDR makes you work for nearly every Outfit, and the main reason to unlock them is to get that sweet 100% completion. If that is your goal, then there is no point in discussing anything further.

However, if somebody is just playing through Red Dead Redemption normally, they don't need to worry all that much about Outfits. Don't get me wrong, they have their benefits and some of them are really helpful, but Rockstar didn't design the game around these unlockables. You can easily complete the story while still wearing John's default cowboy outfit, especially on Normal. On higher difficulty levels, you might want to track down a few Outfits that have gameplay benefits, like the Deadly Assassin or Legend of the West Outfits, both of which improve Dead Eye. If you are going for a low honor run where you kill liberally but don't want to face constant consequences, the Reyes' Rebels and Bureau Uniform Outfit are almost compulsory, as they would stop you from being hunted.

Ultimately, your enjoyment of RDR will likely determine whether Outfits are worth pursuing. The game does not have an overwhelming amount of side content, and you can easily complete the main story in under 20 hours. If you want more RDR, then stitch some Outfits.
