See AllI Don't Care What Anyone Says, Marathon is Awesome
Hey there!
thanks for the thoughtful reply to this article. I cannot speak for other games journalists, but my assumption (in terms of why journalists are consistently speaking highly of Marathon) would be that these people - whose job it is to play many different games - understand what makes a game good, and write/talk about good games when they enjoy them.
Also respectfully, I disagree with your assertion about everyone else’s point. There are many reasons people are unhappy with marathon, or would like to see it fail - but my contention in this article is that most of them do not seem to actually be about the quality of the actual game.
We may disagree, but again, the thoughtful reply is appreciated!
Best,
Chris
P.s. - as much as I wish it were true, I do not think popularity equates to quality. If that were true, the best game on the planet would be Candy Crush.
I Don't Care What Anyone Says, Marathon is Awesome
hey there - I definitely mentioned Bungie’s business practices, I actually included an entire subhead for it in the article. I just don’t equate that to the quality of the game itself, and don’t believe people should.
That said, if Bungie’s shady business practices inspire you or others to boycott the game (despite its quality) I understand that completely. I do not consider that a part of the unfair criticism I am referencing about in this article.
Additionally, I can tell you I firmly, truly believe that Marathon is a good video game, and I am not involved in any shape or form with Marathon PR beyond the fact that as a fan, I want it to continue to be playable. I think (though I can’t say for sure beyond anyone here at GR) that many people who have been praising this game are doing so because they believe it’s actually good, and that it can be good despite the controversies of its creators.
best,
Chris

The Frustrating Irony of Arc Raiders' AI Use Explained
Hi Jay,
I agree that would be ill-fitting and distasteful, so hopefully it puts you at ease to know that during writing, the only consent I intended definitionally was the one found and waived in business and medical documents. Like many words, consent has many different uses, and it might do you well in the future to consider this instead of instantly concluding the most offensive version of what you read is what is meant. Because that’s insane.
Best,
Chris
