Pokopia's Cloud Islands offer players a persistent world where they can get creative without having to change anything in their own single-player, story-driven experience. Up to four players can hop onto a Cloud Island at any given time, and you're free to visit as many Cloud Islands as you want. That being said, there are some limitations to what you can and can't do, and the setup process for creating an island comes with a host of options to navigate. In this guide, I'll explain everything you need to know about Pokopia's Cloud Island mode.
How to Create and Visit a Cloud Island in Pokopia
To create a Cloud Island, interact with the PC outside a Pokemon Center and select the Link Play option. At the bottom of this menu, there's a 'Play on a Cloud Island' option.
Select this, and you'll then be given the following options:
- Go to a previously visited Cloud Island
- Search for a new Cloud Island
- Create a new Cloud Island
The first option gives you the list of Cloud Islands you've previously visited for you to easily jump back into. Searching for a new Cloud Island with the second option requires you to enter the eight-digit address to visit it. You'll need to ask the island host (or another player who's visited the Cloud Island) for this so you can visit it.
The third option allows you create a new Cloud Island. You'll first need to either generate a random Cloud Island, or use a magic number to create one. The Magic Number is a nine-digit number that acts like a 'seed.'
The magic number allows you to create an identical Cloud Island to one you've already visited (or know of from the community). It's the Pokopia equivalent of a Minecraft seed.
Once you've selected one of these options and given your Cloud Island a name, you'll then be given a list of settings to complete. These are:
- Share with Others: Allow other players to play freely on the island.
- Enable Virtual Mode: Choose virtual mode if you don't want other players' actions to be saved.
- Set Link Code: Choose whether players must enter a Link Code to join.
- Display Link Code: Choose whether the Link Code is displayed while playing with others.
- Change Link Code: Check and change the Cloud Island's Link Code.
- Allow Link Code Saving: Choose whether players can automatically save your Link Code to easily revisit the Cloud Island.
After confirming these settings and accepting the island name and address, Pokopia will get to work creating your Cloud Island and then your characters will be transported to the new island from your main area.
You're now free to play around on your Cloud Island with friends (or entirely solo) to your heart's content. When you're ready to return to the main game, open the Pokedex menu (+ button), and then press the - button to 'Go Back Home.'
How Many Players Can Visit a Cloud Island in Pokopia?
Up to four players can play on a Cloud Island at any given time. One slot is always reserved for the host, however, so if they're not online, only three people can play at a time.
However, arguably hundreds of different players could visit the same Cloud Island as long as they have the code for it. They'd just have to play at different times.
Can You Immediately Build and Create Whatever You Want on a Cloud Island in Pokopia?
This isn't like Minecraft's Creative mode where you can just fly around and use whatever items you want from the get-go. You'll still need to craft or buy items and find materials around the world, and there are still Environment Levels for your Cloud Island that determine what you can purchase from the PC's shop outside a Pokemon Center.
However, as long as you've got the materials and the creativity, you can build whatever you want. Cloud Islands include all the areas from the main game, so you've got plenty of space to do whatever you want.
Does Progression Carry Over Between Cloud Islands and Your Main World?
Not really, no. Cloud Islands are largely separate from the main experience. Your Cloud Island has its own Environment Level, shop, and challenges, and any items that you craft or buy from your Cloud Island can't be transferred back to your main world. Your Trainer Rank on your main world also won't improve based on anything you do on a Cloud Island.
Any abilities you've learned from other Pokemon in the main game are unlocked on Cloud Island. However, any Pokemon you find for the first time on a Cloud Island don't show up on your main world's Pokedex as fully discovered. Relics will be discovered in your collection menu, but you can't bring them back.
In a lot of instances, the game acknowledges the progress that you make or the things you find on a Cloud Island, but just doesn't properly let you transfer those items or Pokemon back into your main world.
