Pikachu's speech patterns in Pokemon might be a lot more complex than a lot of fans may imagine, as there seem to be some surprising consistencies when he is addressing a specific person, move, or situation. Though limited to just three repeating syllables, the little electric mouse from the original Pokemon anime, as well as its kin, may actually be pretty effective communicators, as some fans are discovering.

Like most Pokemon, Ash's Pikachu can typically only say its own name, or any of that name's individual syllables, strung together in a bunch of different ways. While information uncovered in recent years shows that early plans for the Pokemon anime would have allowed Pikachu to speak human languages, he never actually does so outside the climactic scene in the movie Pokemon: I Choose You!, which was intended to be part of Ash's imagination. In fact, there are very few Pokemon over the course of the series who have been shown to possess the skills needed for effective verbal conversations with humans, and many who can do so through less-than-human means, such as telepathy.

The Pokemon anime is still going strong, but it's still hard to believe that Ash and Pikachu aren't around anymore.

Pikachu's Words and What They May Mean

While Pikachu's "Pika-speak" seems very limited, he's been able to use it to form several different words that repeat throughout the show and movies, and at least one fan has begun to figure out what some of them mean. Twitter user Bat Vibes has shared a list of 15 unique syllable combinations that appear to be used to address Pikachu's human and Pokemon friends, call out its special moves, or be used for greetings or farewells. What's more, many of these phrases aren't limited to use by Ash's Pikachu alone, with other Pokemon of the same species, including Captain Pikachu from the anime sequel series Pokemon Horizons, consistently replicating them.

Pikachu seems to have come up with several special names for Ash and his companions, with the phrases "Pikapi," "Pikachu-Pi," "Pikaka," and "Pika-Chu" relating to Ash, Misty, Dawn, and Brock, respectively, though that last name also seems to double as a way for Pikachu to address Axew. Likewise, he has also concocted some special monikers for some of his fellow Pokemon friends, like "PikakaPika" for Bulbasaur, "PiPiPi" for Togepi, or "PikaPika" to refer to any number of other Pokemon, but most often relating to Squirtle. Fans should also be prepared for trouble when they hear him say "PiPi-kachu," because it likely means Team Rocket is on the scene.

Like many other shonen anime heroes, Pikachu also seems to have picked up the habit of calling out the names of its moves in the Pokemon anime series and movies. This includes the iconic slow shouting of its full name while delivering a Thunderbolt attack and the use of "Pika-Pika-Pika-Pika-Pika-Pika, Chuuu Pii!" when using Electro Ball. Additionally, Ash's Pikachu has developed some situation-specific Pika-speak words, such as saying "Pi-kaPika" as a goodbye or "Pika-Pikachu" when introducing itself to someone.

It's worth noting that neither Game Freak nor The Pokemon Company has verified that any of this information is canon, which is a fact that the compiler of the list admitted to. Still, they gave a lot of credit for the consistency to longtime Pikachu voice actor Ikue Otani, who has performed the role in more than 1,300 episodes of the series as well as dozens of games and movies, and whose other notable work includes the roles of Tony Tony Chopper in One Piece, Konohamaru in Naruto, and Morgana in Persona 5 and its spin-offs.
