Atlus and Sega have officially announced Persona 6 during the latest Xbox Games Showcase. The long-awaited reveal ends the longest gap between mainline entries in the series' history, with Persona 6 set to usher the hit JRPG franchise into its fourth decade.

Persona 5 turns 10 on September 15. While rumors about its sequel have been rampant for years, late May 2026 marked a turning point for fan speculation, as that is when legitimate-looking Persona 6 assets started leaking online, signaling that the project was close to the finish line. Industry insider Nate The Hate subsequently reported that the JRPG would be formally announced during Microsoft's next big gaming event in late spring.

Persona 6 Announcement Ends Record-Long Wait

The leaked timing for the Persona 6 reveal proved accurate, with Sega and Atlus officially announcing the project with an 84-second teaser during the Xbox Games Showcase on June 7. The move ended what was by far the longest wait for a new mainline entry in the series, a gap that spanned about one-third of the franchise's history. The final record stands at 12 years, three months, and 13 days based on the first Persona 5 teaser, or nine years, eight months, and 23 days counting from the original release date of the iconic RPG.

Persona 6 Teaser Has Creepy Vibes Evocative of the Dark Hour

As with Persona 5's 2014 announcement, the new Persona 6 teaser revealed little on its own. The pre-rendered footage appears to show a graveyard in an eerie forest covered in green fog reminiscent of the Dark Hour from Persona 3. A silhouette of someone mourning a loss can be seen around the 58-second mark. The teaser confirms the game's green visual motif, which Atlus had already hinted at years ago, but offers few other firm details. The recent Persona 6 cast leak therefore remains unconfirmed. Early online reactions to the announcement include theories about paranormal investigations being a plot point, with some fans speculating that Persona 6 could perhaps have some Ghostbusters-esque elements.

Persona 6 Is a Day-One Xbox Game Pass Title

Persona 6 day-one Xbox Game Pass confirmation Atlus / Sega

The Persona 6 teaser included nothing in the way of a release window. However, established Atlus leaker Lolilolailo recently reported that Persona 6 was targeting a September 2027 launch, which would broadly align with Atlus's modern marketing cycles, which average about one year from reveal to release. The teaser did confirm Persona 6 as a day-one Xbox Game Pass title, a move that had been rumored since 2024. In addition to the Xbox Series X/S, PC, and Xbox Cloud Gaming, the upcoming JRPG is also expected to launch on the PlayStation 5 and the Nintendo Switch 2. However, those additional versions have not been formally confirmed yet, not least because the June 7 showcase marked Microsoft's return to its old policy of not including rival platform logos in Xbox event trailers.

The latest Xbox Games Showcase also featured a new trailer for Persona 4 Revival, which revealed its release date: February 18, 2027. Next year may hence see Atlus deliver another one-two punch similar to 2024, when it launched Persona 3 Reload in February and Metaphor: ReFantazio in October.
