In the Patch 0.5 Return of the Ancients update for Path of Exile 2, GGG introduced the in-game build planner, a function that lets players follow builds made by other players in the community.
Previously, if you wanted to follow a build guide in PoE 2, you had to constantly keep checking third-party websites where the build was hosted to see which passive nodes to take, which skill gems to choose, and which supports to take. Now, all players have to do is download the build file and let the build planner do the rest. Here’s how this works.
Path of Exile 2: All Permanent Buffs in Act 4 and Interludes
Path of Exile 2’s Act 4 and three Interlude Acts offer multiple permanent bonuses for players to acquire before heading into the endgame.
How to Use the In-Game Build Planner in Path of Exile 2
- Go to the website where the build you want to use is hosted.
- Download or Export the “Build Planner File.”
-
Place the Build File in
%USERPROFILE%\Documents\My Games\Path of Exile 2\BuildPlanner
- Open Path of Exile 2, log in to your account, and open the character you want to use the build for.
- Open the Passive Skill Tree (P).
- Click on the Build Planner icon in the top left corner.
- Select the imported Build Planner File from the dropdown.
And that's it! Now, the Build File is fully imported and applied to your character.
Multiple Build Files
Most builds have four or more different Build Files, corresponding to different stages of a build. Usually, these are split between leveling, midgame, lategame, and endgame.
When you’re in the leveling phase, you’ll want to use the leveling version of the build, and as you progress, you’ll need to switch to the next Build File in the natural progression. Fortunately, this is quite simple.
Any time you want to use a different Build File, all you have to do is place that Build File in the PoE 2 Build Planner directory shown above (%USERPROFILE%\Documents\My Games\Path of Exile 2\BuildPlanner) and follow the steps as described. Then, choose the new Build File from the Build Planner dropdown, and it will be instantly applied.
How Does the Build Planner Work in PoE 2?
The Build Planner converts community-made builds into in-game overlays that show you exactly which decisions to make in the PoE 2 client itself. There are three main locations where it is implemented:
- Passive Skill Tree: The correct nodes to take according to the Build File will be highlighted in blue.
- Inventory: A Build Planner icon will show up in the top left corner of gear portraits. Hovering over this icon will reveal the desired base item types and modifiers for that slot.
- Gemcutting: In the Gemcutting menu, there will be a Build Planner selector that shows which Skill, Spirit, and Support Gems the build wants. For Skill and Spirit Gems, this will be in the top left, and for Support Gems, this will be one of the subtabs in the main selector window.
