Overwatch is giving Chinese players 10 free Mythic skins as part of its 10-year anniversary event. In addition to being a celebration of this major milestone, Overwatch is providing these rewards to help Chinese fans catch up after being unable to play the game for two years.
On May 24, 2016, Blizzard released Overwatch, redefining the hero shooter genre forever in the process. The game took the world by storm, earning Game of the Year at The Game Awards and becoming one of Blizzard's pillar franchises alongside Warcraft, StarCraft, and Diablo. The original Overwatch shut down on October 2, 2022, to make way for its sequel, Overwatch 2, which was eventually rebranded back to Overwatch on February 10, 2026, just a few months before the game’s 10-year anniversary.

Chinese Overwatch Players Get 10 Free Mythic Skins for Anniversary Event
With this milestone right around the corner, Overwatch is starting to tease its plans for the anniversary – and Chinese gamers are eating well. According to an announcement on Weibo, which was shared on Twitter by OW fan SkaVorah, Chinese Overwatch players will have a special login event where they can get 10 free Mythic hero skins. It is unclear exactly which skins will be available, but the first 14 Mythics can be seen in the promotional image, meaning these fans might be able to choose the Mythic Overwatch skins they would like to unlock. The Chinese anniversary event begins on May 13 and will likely feature even more rewards beyond these free Mythic skins.

Beyond celebrating the anniversary itself, this generous event is likely being held to help Chinese players make up for lost time. The agreement between Blizzard and NetEase, the distributor of Overwatch in China, fell apart on January 24, 2023, meaning the hero shooter became unavailable to play. The two companies resolved their disagreement in April 2024, leading to Overwatch returning to China on February 19, 2025, but by that point, Chinese Overwatch fans had missed Seasons 3 through 14. While they could purchase these skins directly, doing so is not cheap, as a single Mythic hero skin costs roughly $80 if not obtained via the Battle Pass.
Even so, many Overwatch fans outside of China are not happy about this massive event. Chinese Overwatch players have gotten a lot of love in the last year since the game returned, including the OW x Naraka: Bladepoint event, the Neon Pulse Music Festival, the Black Claw Archive, and an expanded Loverwatch Valentine's Day holiday. Chinese fans couldn’t play Overwatch for two whole years, but global players may feel neglected seeing one region receive so many exclusive events while others receive none.
Luckily, Overwatch is going to be holding a 10th anniversary event for all players soon. The trailer for Overwatch Reign of Talon Season 2 confirmed the celebration would begin after the midseason update, which should arrive on or around May 12. It remains to be seen exactly what Overwatch will give fans for the anniversary, and while it likely won’t be a whopping 10 Mythic skins, hopefully the rewards are suitably generous so that no one feels left out during this exciting celebration.
