One Piece: All 7 Times Monster Trio Were Defeated In The Story, Ranked

The Monster Trio is an incredibly powerful group of pirates that the fans have seen quite a lot over the years in One Piece. This trio consists of Luffy, the captain of the Straw Hat Pirates, Zoro, the Combatant and the Swordsman of the Straw Hat Pirates, and finally, Sanji, the fighting cook of the Straw Hat crew. The Monster Trio has emerged lately as one of the strongest units within a pirate crew, and they continue to grow as the Final Saga progresses. While strong, even the Monster Trio has faced several defeats over the years, and some of them were far worse than others.

7 Monster Trio Vs Aokiji

• Arc: Long Ring Long Land Arc

One of the very first defeats of the Monster Trio came against Aokiji on Long Ring Long Land. In this Arc, Kuzan came across the Straw Hat Pirates and decided to eliminate Robin. The Straw Hat Pirates sprang to her defense, with Luffy, Zoro, and Sanji all fighting against Kuzan. However, all of them failed to take him down, and, had the Admiral wished so, he could have eliminated all of them right there and then.

Luffy was eventually frozen to the bone, while Zoro and Sanji were effortlessly taken down by Kuzan as well.

6 Monster Trio Vs CP9 (Water 7)

• Arc: Water 7

The Water 7 Arc of One Piece gave fans their first sight of fractures within the Straw Hat Pirates. Due to the lack of unity in the crew, they were overwhelmed by their enemies — the members of the CP9. When the CP9 revealed their true colors, they were easily able to overwhelm the Straw Hat Pirates. Luffy was taken down by Lucci, Zoro was sent flying by the leopard man as well, while Sanji, who, later down the line, got on the Sea Train, was not able to rescue Robin either and would have died if he had pressed further.

This was yet another defeat for the Monster Trio. However, they turned this around later down the line, when they defeated the CP9 successfully in Enies Lobby.

5 Monster Trio Vs Gecko Moria's Army

• Arc: Thriller Bark

One of the most embarrassing defeats of the Monster Trio came against Gecko Moria's Army. Gecko Moria's minions were all over Thriller Bark and their goal was to steal the shadows of the Straw Hat Pirates. Much to the surprise of the fans, the Monster Trio was the first to fall. Luffy had his shadow stolen and given to Oars, while Zoro was beaten and his shadow was given to Jigoro of the Wind.

Sanji had his shadow taken and given to the Penguin Dog and clearly, the Monster Trio was utterly defeated. Of course, they returned to action later on to claim their victory, as always.

4 Monster Trio Vs Pacifistas

• Arc: Sabaody Archipelago

The island of Sabaody Archipelago posed many problems for the Straw Hat Pirates, and the Pacifistas were certainly one of them. When the first Pacifista emerged on Sabaody, the Straw Hat Pirates were able to deal with it after a lot of effort was put in. Using the incredible teamwork of the entire group, the first Pacifista was taken down.

However, Sentomaru emerged with more Pacifists immediately after, and the crew was completely overwhelmed. Zoro, Sanji, and Luffy knew that they could not defeat another one, and, as a result, decided to focus on running, which is worse than a defeat.

3 Monster Trio Vs Kizaru

• Arc: Sabaody Archipelago

On Sabaody, the Monster Trio also faced off against Admiral Kizaru. Just when Luffy and the crew were getting ready to make their escape, Admiral Kizaru showed up, and this came on the back of Luffy punching a Celestial Dragon.

Naturally, Kizaru was sent to the island immediately, and he decided to eliminate the crew, one by one. Had it not been for Rayleigh Luffy would've been captured and others, such as Usopp would have died. The Monster Trio would have been eliminated completely on that day, if the Dark King and Bartholomew Kuma were not present around.

2 Monster Trio Vs Kuma

• Arc: Sabaody Archipelago

The one to eventually crush the Straw Hat Pirates on the island of Sabaody Archipelago was none other than Bartholomew Kuma. This happened immediately after the crew faced defeat at the hands of Kizaru. While they were attempting to run, Kuma decided to use his Nikyu Nikyu no Mi to eliminate the crew and destroy them.

Kuma split them apart and sent them to different parts of the world, and while this was primarily done to save the crew, it does still count as a defeat for the Straw Hat Pirates and the Monster Trio.

1 Monster Trio Vs Punk Hazard Forces

• Arc: Punk Hazard

In the post-timeskip of One Piece, the Straw Hat Pirates have not lost all that many battles. However, they certainly did lose against Caesar and his forces in Punk Hazard. Despite being strong, the Monster Trio certainly needed a wake-up call and it came on this island, before they went to Dressrosa.

Luffy ended up losing at the hands of Caesar in silly ways, while both Zoro and Sanji were taken out by the Yeti Cool Brothers, which was nothing short of embarrassing for them. For the last time, the Monster Trio was completely defeated on this island.
