Spyro the Dragon may be making a big comeback, with new leaks hinting at a brand-new game coming in the near future. Spyro has not starred in an entirely new game since 2008 (not counting Skylanders), only appearing in a remake trilogy in 2018.

Spyro stands as one of the most recognizable mascot characters in gaming. The original Spyro the Dragon sold more than 4.8 million copies on the PS1, with the game easily settling into the top 20 best-selling games on the console. Spyro 2 and Year of the Dragon performed similarly well, with more than 3 million copies sold on the console. The franchise continued to produce new games, though it would go largely dormant in favor of Skylanders, only returning for the Spyro Reignited Trilogy in 2018. Now, the beloved purple dragon may be gearing up for a big comeback soon.

Spyro the Dragon May Be Making a Comeback Soon

A well-known Rayman franchise leaker is teasing a brand-new Spyro the Dragon game. The return of the iconic purple dragon is said to include RPG elements and features a similar "vibe" to 2005's Spyro: Shadow Legacy for the Nintendo DS. The leak says that the game will have an island-themed hub and hints at the return of a major Spyro villain, though the post does not specify who the antagonist will be. Toys for Bob has reportedly led development of the new Spyro game for several years, though the leaker could not confirm whether the Skylanders studio remains in charge. The post also gives fans an idea of when the game will be revealed, claiming that Spyro will make an appearance at the Xbox Games Showcase on June 7.

A new Spyro game will likely be a welcome return for many longtime fans of the franchise. The Spyro the Dragon series largely went dormant after Activision shifted the character's direction towards Skylanders, only appearing as part of an ensemble cast in the toys-to-life franchise. The remake of the classic Spyro trilogy was also a massive success for Toys for Bob, with Spyro Reignited Trilogy becoming the best-selling game in the franchise, selling more than 10 million units.

Spyro 4 Rumor

Spyro's return joins another iconic mascot character from the PlayStation 1 to receive a revival from Toys for Bob. The success of the Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy led the developer to create Crash Bandicoot 4: It's About Time as a proper sequel to the original trilogy of Crash games. Toys for Bob also created a multiplayer-focused spin-off as part of its Crash Bandicoot revival, with Crash Team Rumble pitting some of the franchise's most recognizable characters against each other.

Spyro the Dragon could be one of several classic franchises from the 1990s to see a resurgence. Tomb Raider: Legacy of Atlantis is currently scheduled to release in February 2027 as a full remake of the original Tomb Raider, featuring a new voice actor for Lara Croft. Ubisoft also recently announced Rayman Legends Retold as an enhanced remake of the 2013 platformer, adding new 3D segments, levels, and more. Spyro the Dragon's return looks to bring back one of gaming's most iconic mascots for a brand-new adventure.
