2026 is the year when several hype-worthy survival games will be released fully, or to Early Access. We're talking about indie titles like Road to Vostok and Solarpunk, but also bigger hitters like Subnautica 2, which seems to be finally getting some good news regarding its Early Access date after a long, rocky patch. More on that later down the line. Aside from new releases, there's also Enshrouded launching out of EA into a 1.0 build sometime in fall 2026.

Best Co-Op Games On Steam To Play Right Now

From online multiplayer titles to local masterpieces, Steam has plenty of fantastic co-op games that should be played in 2026.

On the other hand, we have some highly anticipated games like Blackfrost: The Long Dark 2 facing layoffs and pushing its Early Access release beyond 2026. It's a shame, but also reflective of the state of matters in the gaming industry as a whole. Not to worry, though, because there are still some interesting survival games to sink your claws into and tide you over until your favorite titles are released. We'll rank these roughly by the hype they're getting and the number of followers on Steam.

9 Ormod: Directive

A Highly Customizable, Harsh, And Deep Survival Experience

Starting off with one of the most versatile-looking survival titles, we have Ormod: Directive, which promises a variety of game modes depending on your preferences. You can enjoy the game's harsh survival mechanics by yourself in a solo world, or you can grab along friends, jump into a PVP server, or just keep it fully PVE.

The crafting and resource management look to be extensive, going all the way into factory-style automation, while you scavenge the world for loot while fighting off its robotic enemies. No two worlds are the same, either, with procedural generation used to keep you on your toes. If you're looking for something that involves gunplay and has more than just one game mode and difficulty to experiment with, keep an eye out for this one. There's no set release date as of yet from House 16 Software.

8 Road to Vostok

A Post-Apocalyptic Take On The Finnish-Russian Border

Road to Vostok is oozing the type of hardcore, FPS survival energy that the Metro and STALKER games have. It's not a continuous open-world environment, but instead has you progress from one zone to another until you reach Vostok, a permadeath zone. Before you get there, though, you'll need to gear up and scavenge as much as possible while avoiding any enemy factions looking to take you down.

Incredible PC Games That Will Run on a Potato Laptop

You don't need a monstrous PC to see some of the best the platform has to offer. Today, let's cover the best low-end PC games.

The gunplay looks to be highly realistic, sure to please anyone who wants their survival game to be as grounded as possible. As a Finnish person, I can't wait to get my hands on this, as the setting hits close to home and oozes that grim, post-apocalyptic darkness. The developer, Road to Vostok Ltd., is releasing the game into Early Access around April 7, 2026, so if you're interested in supporting a promising indie FPS title, jot that date down in your calendar.

7 Astromine

Voxel Space Exploration And Resource Gathering

One of the more interesting sandboxes to come this year has to be Astromine. It has that unique, voxel look that's been popular for some time now, only now, you get to travel from planet to planet and tear the world apart for resources. These planets are procedurally generated, and the world is subject to realistic physics, which means (un)expected shenanigans will ensue as you start digging and mining for resources.

You'll encounter a fair share of robotic and alien life forms hostile to you during your conquest of planets, so make sure to bring along a friend or two with whom you can build bases and spaceships to stand a fighting chance. Alientrap is the developer behind this charming gem, which has no exact planned release date for 2026 yet.

6 Permafrost

Survival In Sub-Zero Temperatures

Back to more shooter gameplay, Permafrost appears to deliver some harsh, nail-biting survival gameplay sometime in 2026 when it releases for Early Access. It's one of the best-looking survival titles so far, with incredible snowy environments, action-packed gameplay, and some interesting crafting and base-building options.

Plus, the exploration really does take you back to the Metro games once again, so if you miss those days, this could be something to keep an eye out for. You'll be able to tackle the freezing temperatures of Permafrost and its wilderness alone or with friends, and you'll definitely need help if you plan on surviving against other, not-so-friendly survivors. Bonus points for the fact that you'll receive a canine companion to assist you on your journey. Always love a game with a dog friend!

5 Outbound

Cozy Van Life Off The Grid

If some of the previous games featured seem too harsh or challenging, Outbound could be your jam. There's already a demo out for those interested in getting their hands on it ASAP, with a planned release from Square Glade Games set for April 23, 2026. The concept is really simple: you travel around in a van, living a life off the grid. In order to survive, you need to scavenge the world for resources to craft items and objects to enjoy your new sustainable life.

Hop in with friends, and see if you can figure out how to set up solar power, live off the land by starting your own farm, and upgrade your trusty vehicle. This game also lets you have a pet, which is always a major bonus in my books. Outbound looks to be a cozy breath of fresh air among more brutal survival games, so if you're looking for something light-hearted and relaxing, definitely give the demo a shot.

4 Solarpunk

Stay Solar-Powered On Floating Islands

Another game that has a playable demo out right now for you to try is Solarpunk. It's also a cozier game for those who prefer their survival titles with a more light-hearted vibe. The graphics alone are really charming and vibrant, and the world delivers something a little different from the usual. You're traveling on a tiny airship between islands, finding resources to craft more to make your little farm and home base run smoother.

8 Open-World Games That Never Waste Your Time

These open-world games do not waste your time with bloat or busywork.

As the name implies, your systems will run on solar power. You'll have an automated irrigation system for your crops, and in very Stardew Valley fashion, you can even tend to farm animals on your cute little cottage in the skies. This one's also available to play with friends, so when it does eventually release sometime in 2026, why not tackle it together?

3 Outward 2

The Harshest Open-World Fantasy RPG Gets A Sequel

We're getting to the most anticipated survival games now, and some of the bigger titles known in the genre. Starting off, we have Outward 2, a continuation of the genius found in Outward. It's a return to Aurai with upgraded visuals and systems, and a fair share of new adventures and challenges waiting for you. The first Outward was famous for having no fast travel and combining survival gameplay elements with classic fantasy RPG gameplay, and the second game is bound to follow along.

You'll have to really know how to prepare and approach each encounter in the world with a strategy, as well as accept the fact that you'll be weak and vulnerable at the start. The world looks gorgeous, and with a story to explore and co-op available, it's the perfect, challenging adventure to jump into with your friends if you want something that tests your might and teamwork. Look forward to it sometime around Q3 of 2026.

2 Lay Of The Land

A Little Something For The Minecraft And Vintage Story Fans

Minecraft and Vintage Story are some of the foundational games of the survival genre, which is why Lay of the Land is getting so much attention right now. It has the charm of those two games in voxel based format, and a fantasy world with structures and enemies oozing with mystique.

The creative tools look to be pretty deep compared to something like Minecraft, so if you always lamented the restrictions in that game, Lay of the Land will definitely let you unleash the full wrath of your creativity. On top of highly detailed base-building and crafting, though, you have pretty interesting yet simple combat. You have a ton of melee options to choose from, but also magic that looks amazing. Southern Cross Initiative is releasing this game fairly soon as well, with a planned date of April 8, 2026.

1 Subnautica 2

The Hit Underwater Survival Franchise Is On Precarious Grounds

Subnautica 2's development has been filled with all sorts of obstacles and drama, as proven by the debacle of 2025 when KRAFTON fired the CEO and several key members of the team working on the game and delayed the Early Access release until 2026. The most recent news is that the game is supposedly releasing on Early Access sometime around May of 2026, but we'll have to see if this comes to fruition after its previous delay.

Even if the prognosis for this game looks bad right now, I'm one for holding out hope that something will still come out of it. It's a big part of the survival games genre, with the highest number of followers out of all other unreleased survival games on Steam. The sequel looks to bring us some brand-new creatures, but most importantly, it's finally going to give fans co-op, which is undoubtedly one of the most requested features from the previous titles in the series. Everyone, cross your toes and fingers that we get to dive into the depths of the alien seas in May 2026!
