Since the 1990s, the Power Rangers have been one of the most powerful superhero groups on television. Easily the most iconic iteration of the fighting force are the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers. MMPR was the first series the showrunners chose to adapt from Super Sentai, and became the very blueprint for Power Rangers going forward.
Since the beginning, the original series has been referenced countless times. Yet, they have never been given an official continuation, until now. Boom! Comics has announced its plan to continue the Mighty Morphin legacy in comic form. Each of the original five members is set to appear in the new comic which pits them against a new and arguably more powerful threat than the Rangers have ever faced.
The Mighty Morphin Power Rangers are the Most Iconic Teams in the Franchise's History
The Original 1990s Group is Returning in the Form of a Comic Spin-Off
In 1993, Saban Entertainment first released the American adaptation of Super Sentai, known as The Mighty Morphin Power Rangers. The show was an instant success and quickly found a new audience among Western fans. Although the series would borrow some footage from the original Japanese franchise, the storylines and characters remain largely original.
Power Rangers: 10 Strongest Unmorphed Rangers, Ranked
The strongest Power Rangers have just as much power when they're unmorphed.
The characters specifically would strike a chord among fans, and is a large part of why the series remains so iconic. Eventually, the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers would transition to the Zeo Rangers, with some even retiring beforehand. The franchise managed to maintain its momentum, but that didn't stop many fans from being nostalgic for the original.
To combat their ever rising expectations, the franchise is jam-packed with references and cameos concerning the original team. On the contrary, aside from a single special, there has never been an official continuation of the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, until 2026. Boom! Comics has officially announced an official comic spin-off featuring the iconic original Power Rangers as adults.
Billy Cranston is Set to Reunite the Original Mighty Morphin Rangers Against a New Threat
The Team Will Consist Of Every Original Member of the Mighty Morphin Team, Possibly Even Tommy Oliver
As of now, a majority of the plot is yet to be released, but audiences know the core premise. A new threat known as Rita Rabiosa has emerged in Angel Grove, causing Billy Cranston to call on the original Mighty Morphin Rangers once again. This series is most likely a direct continuation of Boom! Comics' other Mighty Morphin series and could feature just as many references to the comic as the original television series.
Rita Rabiosa is confirmed to be an aspect of Rita Repulsa, but is likely a separate entity. If the comic series follows the canon timeline, Rita Repulsa should already be the Mystic Mother by this point. That being said, the character's design and name are too similar for him to be anyone other than the iconic villain. SInce he has appeared in more modern versions of the Power Rangers, its possible other villains like Lord Zedd might make an appearance as well.
10 Best Red Power Rangers, Ranked
The Red Rangers are usually the strongest and most capable members of every Power Rangers team, but that isn't always the case.
Interestingly enough, Tommy Oliver has not appeared in the promotional material so far. This is likely because Tommy was either serving on another Rangers team at the time, or had entered retirement. More than likely, the comic takes place as Tommy is serving as the Black Dino Thunder Ranger, and he could even make an appearance in that form within the comic.
Fans Theorize This Comic Might Bridge The Gap Between the Series and the Special
Since Trini Kwan is Alive, the Comic Cannot Take Place in the Modern Day, Even if the Rangers Are Older
So far, the official canonical timeline for the series has not been established. However, many fans believe they know where the comic lies because of one character's status. Unfortunately, Trini Kwan is one of the only Rangers to lose her life on the field of battle. SInce she is still alive in the comic, the events have to take place before the Mighty Morphin Power Rangers Forever and Always Special.
Power Rangers: 10 Best Blue Rangers, Ranked
The Blue Rangers are often some of the best supports on any given Power Rangers team, but some are far more popular (and better) than others.
It's possible that Trini's daughter and Tommy's son could even be referenced within the comic. Both characters are pivotal parts of the Power Rangers comic mythos, and it would make sense for them to at least be mentioned. The comic might even end with the Might Morphin Rangers preparing to take on Robo Rita before the unfortunate accident.
Overall, another Mighty Morphin Power Rangers comic with the Rangers as adults is a perfect combination of nostalgia and a great idea. The series will easily gain traction, no matter the subject and could even lead to a live-action spin-off. Unfortunately, fans will have to wait until May 2026 to find out if the comic manages to find success.
