With Spider-Man: Brand New Day only a couple of weeks away from its premiere, Peter Parker is the subject of debate after one of the MCU's biggest directors gave his take on Spider-Man's origin, which caused fans to let loose on him. Furthermore, it opened the floodgates of criticism for certain creative decisions and source material deviations in the MCU, which have always been controversial to say the least.

One of the most controversial and hated characters in Spider-Man history may have just found his way into the MCU.

In a new interview with CBR, Joe Russo, the director of Avengers: Endgame and the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday, alongside his brother Peter Russo, revealed the reason for the big change in Peter Parker's origin in the MCU, contrary to the comics and other Spider-Man adaptations. He explained that Tom Holland's Peter Parker bears no responsibility for the death of his uncle Ben, and that this key detail was omitted because it would be a darker and "intense" interpretation of the character. This certainly did not sit right with fans who have been critical of this change.

Peter Parker's Origin In The MCU Is Very Different To The Comics

In Spider-Man: No Way Home, it is the death of Aunt May at the hands of Green Goblin that leads him to become a better hero and into what he will become in the upcoming film this summer. While there are a few surface-level similarities between the original motivation and the MCU version, the film adaptation massively dramatizes it and, in some ways, strips it of its charm by increasing the scale and magnitude. Furthermore, the MCU has Peter take up the Spider-Man persona even before the death of Aunt May, which interrupts the logical continuity of his character development.

In the original comic, as well as Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield versions, it is the completely accidental death of Uncle Ben at the hands of a carjacker that causes a big shift in Peter's destiny. He blames himself for the death as he ignored the criminal earlier and could have stopped the eventual murder. It was Uncle Ben who delivered the iconic line about power and responsibility before succumbing to death, and in the MCU, Aunt May delivers it instead.

The MCU's Change To Spider-Man Is Its Biggest Blunder

Besides Uncle Ben's demise happening very early in the story, the fact that it was a random and completely preventable thing makes the weight of it that much heavier and more relatable, which is why fans grew attached to it as it embodies the themes of Spider-Man perfectly.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day Trailer Proves MCU's Peter Parker is Changing Forever

The Spider-Man: Brand New Day trailer hints at psychological and biological trauma which could end up changing the popular MCU Superhero forever.

The MCU has made many retcons to the original versions, and while many were good or sometimes even improved on the source material, such as Buckey being Steve Rodgers' best friend, Nebula being Thanos' daughter or Wong's character being fleshed out more, there were certainly many creative decisions that panned out well. On the flip side, there are changes that were very controversial, and Peter's origins remain one of the most contentious to this day.
