In Marathon, the final step of the Return on Investment contract line will have Runners hacking into a secured container and stealing UESC supplies within a single run. The catch, however, is that you'll need to fight through UESC resistance if you want to make it out alive. How to Complete Return on Investment 5 in Marathon
Return on Investment 5 is a contested contract that takes place on Dire Marsh, and is the final step in its respective series. As such, expect to make multiple attempts to complete it, as other Runners may be competing for the same goal. The contract is broken down into the following steps:
In a single run:
- Hack rigged UESC supply container in Canal.
- Exfil UESC Stockpile.
Because it is a contested contract, only one Runner/Crew can complete Return on Investment 5 per match. If the UESC supply container has already been hacked before you arrive, you will not be able to complete the contract, and must try again on another run.
1) Disable the Security under Canal
On Dire Marsh, head toward the Canal area just east of Maintenance and south of Algae Ponds. As you arrive, you'll notice the Canal leading into a yellow-painted tunnel with green security lasers on both sides. Approach the lasers, but don't walk through them.
In the middle of the room is the rigged UESC container, but you'll want to disable the security system before attempting to enter the room. Walking through the lasers will set off alarms and cause multiple waves of UESC units to storm in. Instead, peek through the lasers and look for six security boxes with red lights on them (as shown in the picture above).
The security boxes are all within this room, but are randomly placed. You will most likely need to look inside the room from both sides of the tunnel, so make sure to climb to the other side and thoroughly search inside. Once all six boxes are destroyed, the lasers will be disabled, and you can enter the room safely.
2) Hack the Container and Fight the UESC Commander
Now that you're inside, you can hack the rigged container in the middle of the room. Unfortunately, this still sets off an alarm, and you'll be trapped inside while a wave of UESC approaches.
Use the nearby security room as cover and fight off the UESC forces. You'll mostly be dealing with UESC Recruits, however, a couple Ghosts and a shielded Commander will also spawn. All UESC forces must be destroyed to disable the walls. Once they're taken care of, approach the container again and take the UESC Stockpile. Now, you just need to exfil as soon as possible.
A blaring security alarm and a wave of UESC forces is very noisy, and it is highly likely that you've attracted hostile Runners to your area. It may be wise to quietly hide for a moment to make sure there's no one lurking around you.
3) Exfil with the Stockpile
You've got the Stockpile, but now you've got to make it out alive. If you've made it this far, you already know the drill; find the safest exfil and get out of Dire Marsh.
Remember to use whatever tools are at your disposal to ensure the safest extraction. Smoke grenades, invisibility, or your Destroyer shield can all help if any hostiles are around. Once you've successfully exfilled, the contract will be completed, and you'll have officially finished the Return on Investment contract line.
