In Marathon, the Return on Investment 3 contract requires Runners download a security code from Quarantine, defeat a UESC Commander in Maintenance, before finally intercepting UESC communications elsewhere in a single run. On top of it all, the Traxus contract is contested, meaning there's even more competition than normal to get it done. If this sounds like a lot to chew on, don't worry, it's not as bad as it seems. In this Marathon guide, we'll go over the steps to completing the Return on Investment 3 contract successfully.

Stuck on Protect/Destroy 3 in Marathon? Here’s where to install the UV Protocol and tag the marked locations on Dire Marsh.
How to Complete Return on Investment 3 in Marathon
Return on Investment 3 is a Traxus contract that takes place on the Dire Marsh map. In order to successfully complete it, all three steps must be achieved in a single run:
- Download a UESC Comms Security Code in Quarantine
- Defeat and take the credentials from the UESC Commander in Maintenance
- Intercept UESC Comms at AI Uplink or Bio-Research
1) Download the UESC Comms Security Code
After loading into Dire Marsh, you'll want to head straight to the western side of Quarantine. Stick to the outside of the facility to find an entrance tucked away on the western side. Once you enter through the doors, you'll immediately spot a breakable grate and a crawl space in front of you. The crawl space leads directly to the security terminal that you need to interact with. Otherwise, if you're approaching the room from the middle of Quarantine, look for the large blue-walled room on the first floor.
Return on Investment 3 is a contested contract, meaning only one squad can complete it per run. If you're unable to interact with the terminal, it's likely that another Runner already made it there before you.
Enter the room and interact with the terminal to download the UESC Comms Security Code. Now, you'll need to head southeast toward Maintenance for the next step.
Interacting with the terminal will cause your character to be locked into an animation until it is complete. Make sure to get rid of UESC lurking around, or wait until they're far enough away not to notice you.
2) Defeat the UESC Commander
Now that you've obtained the security code, you'll need Commander credentials to intercept the signal. In the southeastern corner of the first floor of the Maintenance facility building, a squad of UESC robots will spawn in when approached. One of those robots is a UESC Commander, who will be indicated by the red icon on your HUD.
Along with the Commander launching grenades toward you, multiple waves of UESC robots will spawn. Keep your distance and pick off the robots carefully until they've all been destroyed. Once the Commander is disabled, approach its shell to find the UESC Credentials on the ground. Pick them up, brush yourself off, and prepare for the final step of the contract.
3) Intercept the UESC Comms
The last step involves intercepting the UESC communication signal at either AI Uplink or Bio-Research. Since you're already at Maintenance, it's much easier to go to AI Uplink, as you'll be able to stick to the outskirts of the map and remain mostly unnoticed.
On the southern side of AI Uplink, where the large, black wires hang over a walkway, is the UESC Comms device. You'll need to reach the platforms above the large wires, which can be done by climbing atop the buildings on either side and walking across the wires, or by using abilities like the Thief's grapple.
Sitting on one of the platforms is a capsule-like device. Interact with it to intercept the UESC Comms and complete the mission. Fortunately, you don't need to exfil to complete the contract, so you're free to keep looting around the map if you still have space in your inventory.
