LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight features 7 playable characters, each with a unique set of skills, including vehicles, gadgets, and costumes. This isn't like previous LEGO games, where you can just pick dozens of characters at any time, as the selection is far more restricted, but more in-depth.

Below, we'll share the unlock requirements for each playable character in LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight so you know when you can unlock your favorite character (and which characters actually unlock). When Does Batman Unlock?

Batman is technically the first character you unlock, as you'll be playing as Bruce Wayne in the Prologue sections. However, you're not getting your cowl and batsuit until you start Chapter 1. However, it's well worth the wait due to his Arkham-like combat and the driveable Batmobiles.

Eventually, Batman will have an assortment of gadgets that can be used fluidly in combat or throughout puzzle-solving adventures, with his Batarang, Batclaw, and Explosive Gel.

Batman is the protagonist, and as such, you cannot swap him out of your roster. Batman is always in the Player 1 slot.

When Does Jim Gordon Unlock?

  • How to Get: Complete the Prologue
  • Gadget 1: Foam Sprayer
  • Gadget 2: Rebound Launcher

Jim Gordon unlocks as you begin Chapter 1, and is included as "Player 2" for the entirety of Chapter 1's adventure. Gordon is very useful in puzzles, as his Foam Sprayer will be utilized quite often to block pipes and stop active machinery. Plus, trapping bad guys in sticky foam is quite the treat.

When Does Catwoman Unlock?

  • How to Get: Complete Chapter 2 - Mimes
  • Gadget 1: Whip
  • Gadget 2: Call Kitty

Catwoman unlocks during the Chapter 2 main mission, Mines. It's impossible to miss this mission, so simply return to Gotham City after Chapter 1 and follow the main objective until you're introduced to her (and her thieving ways, as she steals Gordon's batclaw!)

Catwoman is extremely useful, as she can cut through glass, crawl up walls, and use the Call Kitty gadget to control a LEGO cat through tight spaces where Batman's muscles simply wouldn't fit.

When Does Robin Unlock?

  • How to Get: Complete Chapter 3 - Two-Face
  • Gadget 1: Birdarang
  • Gadget 2: Cable Launcher

Robin will automatically unlock in Chapter 3 once you enter the mission to visit Haly's Circus. During the mission, Dick Grayson won't exactly have his Robin outfit yet, but after a montage of training, the Dynamic Duo will be born!

Robin is quite similar to Batman, but with a few interesting alterations. Firstly, his Birdarang can hit 3 targets at once, and the Cable Launcher can allow Robin to use a line launcher as a tightrope to walk across for puzzles and unique combat scenarios.

When Does Batgirl Unlock?

  • How to Get: Complete Chapter 4 - Firefly
  • Gadget 1: Hackarang
  • Gadget 2: Drone

Batgirl joins the Bat Family at the start of Chapter 4, and she's a welcome addition to the team, even if Jim Gordon doesn't even know about it (otherwise, she's bound to be grounded).

Batgirl's fighting style is similar to the other characters', but her gadgets are far more tech-focused, which lets her hack items and stun enemies. Her drone is also useful for scanning areas and gaining height advantage with perch points.

When Does Nightwing Unlock?

  • How to Get: Complete Chapter 4 - Mr. Freeze
  • Gadget 1: Electrorang
  • Gadget 2: Electric Cable Launcher

It's time for this Robin to fly the nest, as Dick Grayson has grown up enough to become Nightwing! Don't worry, you can still swap to Robin, but Nightwing will unlock as an additional playable character in the final mission of Chapter 4, with some unique changes to his childhood counterpart.

While Nightwing plays relatively the same, he's got more of a zappy edge to him, and this zappy edge comes in the form of electrified gadgets! Said gadgets are useful for puzzle solving, as they can jumpstart electronics and be connected via cables.

When Does Talia Unlock?

  • How to Get: Complete Chapter 5 - Tumbler Chase
  • Gadget 1: Blowdarts
  • Gadget 2: Ninja Dash

Talia al Ghul is actually playable in the Prologue section while training with the League of Shadows, but she won't be unlocked until much later in the game. Talia will unlock as a permanent playable character at the beginning of Chapter 5, and she has a few new moves to master.

Now, as a trained assassin, Talia can vanish with the Ninja Dash and teleport forward to reach inaccessible areas, and stun enemies with her Blowdarts, making her exceptional for stealth encounters.
