When playing games on Steam, you might want to check for the useful Cloud Save feature, which essentially means that if you lose your manual save or it gets corrupted, you can rely on the cloud to back it up for you.
Whether it's on your PC or the Steam Deck, Cloud Save can be a life-saving feature that allows you to return to classic games you haven't played in a while, since your save files are always on the cloud waiting. So, here's how to enable and use Cloud Save for Steam.
How to Use Remote Play on Steam
Want to use the horsepower of your gaming PC but on another computer or mobile device? Steam Remote Play is the answer, and this is how to set it up.
How to Turn On Cloud Save in Steam
If you don't have Cloud Save turned on and you're looking to play on another PC or Steam device with the same Steam account, then this is how you can turn on Cloud Save:
-
In the Steam app, click the Steam tab in the upper row of tabs in the left corner.
- This drops a list of options; select Settings.
-
This opens a new box. On the left, select Cloud from the settings menu.
- To turn on cloud save, make sure the slider bar on the right of Enable Steam Cloud is on the right, turning it blue.
How to Check if a Game is Cloud Save Compatible on Steam
Some games don't support Cloud Save, and while it's relatively uncommon and reserved for classic titles and indie games from long ago, it's still something you should always check, just in case it might be a deal-breaker for you.
When viewing a game's store page, there are columns under the description that list what you need to know when buying a game. One section will have the Steam Cloud icon. If you don't see this icon, the game is not Steam Cloud Compatible.
How To See Your Steam Cloud Save Compatible Games
If you're wondering if one of the games you've already purchased is compatible with cloud save, you can see this in your library:
- With Steam open, go to the lower row of tabs in the upper left corner and click Library.
- In your library, there's a menu on the left that lists all your purchased games. Click the one you want to check for cloud save on.
- Once the game's library page opens, you will see a Cloud Status section next to the Play button if it is cloud compatible. If it isn't, there won't be a Cloud Status banner here.
How To Find Your PC's Cached Copies of Cloud Saves
When you have the Steam Cloud, your computer will have a folder that saves your cloud files locally:
|
Operating System |
Local Storage Location |
|---|---|
|
Windows |
C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\userdata\[YourSteamID]\[AppID] |
|
macOS |
~/Library/Application Support/Steam/userdata/[YourSteamID]\[AppID] |
|
Linux |
~/.local/share/Steam/userdata/[YourSteamID]\[AppID] |
Use the local storage location for your operating system and fill in your Steam ID where it says YourSteamID and game name where it says AppID. This will take you to the file with your saves.
How To Find Cloud Saves on Steam Remote Storage
You can also view your Steam cloud saves online on its Remote Storage page:
- Open your browser and copy+paste/click this link: https://store.steampowered.com/account/remotestorage.
- Log in if you're not logged in on your browser already, and a list of your Steam Cloud games will show. It will have the game, the number of files, and the total size of the files listed.
- If you need to access the files, click Show Files next to the game you need access to, and it will show all the files for the game. On the far right side is an option to Download.
