With the increasingly larger and larger size of game files, modern Steam games can take up a lot of storage space in your PC’s hard drive or SSD.
In order to manage disk space, players may want to move a game to another drive, freeing up disk space on the original. Luckily, the process is fairly simple. Here’s how it works.
How to Use Remote Play on Steam
Want to use the horsepower of your gaming PC but on another computer or mobile device? Steam Remote Play is the answer, and this is how to set it up.
How to Move Steam Games to Another Drive
Steam lets players move their games from one drive to another using two different methods.
Method #1
- Open Steam.
- Rght-click the game you want to move to another drive or folder in your Steam Library.
- Select “Properties.”
- Click on the “Installed Files” in the left column.
- Click on “Move Install Folder” in front of the option that says Move this game’s content to another folder or drive.
- Select the destination drive and hit “Move” again to confirm.
Method #2
- Open the Steam client.
- Click on the Steam icon in the top left corner and click on “Settings.”
- Select “Storage” from the left column in the new window.
- Open the drive selector drop-down.
- Select the drive where the game you want to move is currently installed.
- Find the game from the list of installed titles and check the empty box in front of its name.
- Click on “Move.”
- Select the target drive from the drop-down and click on “Move” again to confirm.
Steam only lets you move games between Steam Library folders on different drives. If you don’t already have a Steam Library folder in the drive you want to move your game to, you can create one by selecting the “Add Drive” option in the drive selector drop-down and choosing the desired drive.
Verifying File Integrity on Steam
After you move a game’s installation folder to another drive, it’s generally good practice to let Steam verify file integrity. You can do this quite easily. Here’s how:
- Open your Steam Library.
- Right-click on the game whose file integrity you want to verify.
- Go to Properties → Installed Files.
- Click on “Verify integrity of game files,” the third option from the top.
- Let Steam run the validation, which can take between 2 and 10 minutes, depending on your hardware and the total file size of the game.
After the verification is complete, you’ll see a message of “All files successfully validated” where the verify integrity of game files option used to be, indicating that the process is now done and your game is ready to play in the new folder.
Save files for Steam games are not kept in the game’s installation directory. Even if you don’t have Steam Cloud Saves enabled, your save files will not be affected by moving game installation folders.
How to Move Games to Another Drive in Bulk
Steam lets players move multiple installed games from one drive to another at the same time, and it’s actually quite intuitive. The process is exactly the same as described above.
The only difference is that when you’re selecting which game to move, you select multiple games instead of just one using the check mark selection.
Then, select the drive you want to move those games to. As long as you have enough space, the process will go smoothly.
Steam’s Big Picture Mode (and the Steam Deck’s default interface) does not let players move games in bulk. If you’re using it, you’ll need to switch to the desktop client to be able to move multiple games.
