Finding armor in Gothic 1 Remake is much more difficult than in most traditional RPGs. Even if you manage to defeat bandits, camp guards, or ordinary residents throughout the Colony, chances are they won't drop the armor they're wearing. Because of this, obtaining better protection becomes a priority very early in the game.
Fortunately, there is a solid armor set available shortly after starting your adventure. While a similar version can be purchased for a hefty amount of Ore Nuggets, there is also a completely free way to get it if you know where to look.

How to Get Free Digger's Armor in Gothic 1 Remake
After reaching the Old Camp and speaking with the many NPCs scattered throughout the area, you will likely come across Fisk, one of the camp's merchants. He sells a variety of useful items, including lockpicks, weapons, and most importantly, the Digger's Light Trousers.
The problem is the price. Fisk asks for roughly 300 Ore Nuggets, which is an enormous amount of money during the opening hours of the game. While the armor offers a decent defensive boost, most players will struggle to justify spending that much currency so early. Thankfully, there is another option.
A free armor set called the Digger's Dress provides the exact same defensive stats, making Fisk's version largely unnecessary if you're willing to make a short trip.
To get this armor, you first need to reach the New Camp. You can either progress through the Old Camp quests until Mordrag offers the Out of Sight quest and escorts you there, or make the journey on your own if you already know the route.
Once inside the New Camp, make your way to the upper section where the main settlement is located. This area is filled with houses, merchants, mercenaries, and several important NPCs.
From here, follow these steps to reach the armor:
- While facing the large purple glowing area below, turn around and head left.
- Continue following the left wall and keep moving forward.
- You'll eventually come across a path between the mountains.
- Pass the open wooden entrance and continue forward until you spot several Scavengers.
- Ignore the Scavengers and keep heading straight toward the entrance of a cavern.
- Move past the Molerats near the entrance and proceed into the cavern.
- Using a Torch here is highly recommended as it makes navigating the dark passages much easier.
- Continue following the only available path through the cavern.
- Once you emerge on the other side, stick to the path on the right.
- After a short walk, you'll arrive at the Free Mine.
- A Mercenary near the entrance will automatically start a conversation with you. Keep the discussion brief and continue onward.
- Head down into the mine and look for an NPC named Swiney.
- Speak with Swiney and tell him that you want to become a digger.
- When he asks whether you've worked a vein before, answer "Yes."
- Swiney will then reward you with the Digger's Dress.
The Digger's Dress provides 10 Edge Protection, 10 Blunt Protection, and 5 Fire Protection, making it one of the best pieces of armor you can obtain this early in the game. Best of all, it costs absolutely nothing.
