Azkaban is supposedly one of the most inescapable locations in the Wizarding World. Guarded by Dementors and surrounded by water, the prison holds some of Britain's most dangerous wizards and witches, so when Sirius Black escapes after spending 12 years behind its walls in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, it initially seems like a far-fetched idea that he'd ever make it out in one piece.
Sirius's escape is far more complicated than simply using magic to break out. His escape depended on several factors, including a secret ability the Ministry didn't know about, the extraordinary physical effects of his imprisonment, and a crucial discovery that finally gave him reason to leave after over a decade behind bars.
Sirius Black's Animagus Form Helped Him Escape
He Didn't Need a Wand to Transform
The biggest reason Sirius could escape is that he had a secret ability the Ministry didn't know about: he was an Animagus. During his years at Hogwarts, Sirius (Padfoot) illegally learned how to transform himself into a large black dog, while James Potter (Prongs) turned into a stag and Peter Pettigrew (Wormtail) transformed into a rat. The three Marauders did this so that they could accompany their friend, Remus Lupin, when he turned into a werewolf, but none of them registered their abilities with the Ministry.
That secret was vital when Sirius was imprisoned in Azkaban. The Ministry believed it had imprisoned a human wizard who was accused of betraying Lily and James Potter, as well as murdering Peter Pettigrew and 12 Muggles. As such, there was no preparation for dealing with him as an Animagus, leaving him with an ability that the Azkaban guards had not accounted for. More importantly, transforming into a dog gave Sirius some protection from the Dementors.
The creatures feed on and strip away positive human emotions, like hope and happiness, but Sirius explains in the Prisoner of Azkaban novel that he could withstand their influence in his Animagus form because dogs have less complex emotions than humans. He could still be affected, but he wasn't as vulnerable. He also didn't need a spell to transform into his Animagus, because it is an internalized ability that he mastered during his time at Hogwarts, so the fact that his wand had been confiscated was no issue.
How Did Sirius Actually Get Out?
A Small Cell, Dementors, and Violent Seas Posed a Big Problem
The physical part of Sirius' escape was surprisingly simple, but the circumstances leading up to it were anything but. During his 12 years in Azkaban, the wizard had become extremely malnourished. Azkaban's conditions had taken a horrible toll on his body, and by the time he escaped, he was very thin. When he transformed into his Animagus, that extreme weight loss meant that his canine body was able to slip through the bars of his cell.
Sirius explained this in the Shrieking Shack in Prisoner of Azkaban: he transformed into his skinnier dog form, slipped through the bars when the Dementors were bringing his food, was able to somewhat withstand the Dementors' influence, and escaped the prison. He then swam for miles to the mainland, fueled by an intense desire to find Peter Pettigrew and aided by the canine's natural stamina. Some Harry Potter fans posit that, despite the dog being a Scottish Deerhound in the film, his breed resembles a dog like a Newfoundland, which is particularly adept at swimming.
Sirius's escape is all down to his ability to exploit a physical loophole in Azkaban's prison system, which only existed because he had been imprisoned for so long. His severe malnourishment, which was otherwise one of the most damaging consequences of Azkaban, ironically became one of his biggest advantages. But though Sirius successfully reached the mainland, he did describe the ordeal as having left him close to death. The fact that he had something worth escaping for, though, was another huge help.

Sirius knew he was innocent, and he held on to that unwavering certainty for over a decade. During a visit to Azkaban, Cornelius Fudge gave Sirius his copy of the Daily Prophet newspaper, which featured a photograph of the Weasley family on holiday in Egypt. In that picture, Sirius noticed that Ron's pet rat, Scabbers, was on his shoulder, and he immediately recognized the rat as his old friend, Peter Pettigrew. As such, he learned that the man everyone believed he killed was alive and well, hiding in his Animagus form.
Pettigrew was the one who betrayed Lily and James Potter, framing Sirius for the crime and then disappearing as Wormtail. Now, Pettigrew was living at Hogwarts with Harry Potter. Sirius then had a reason to escape the prison that vastly outweighed his fear of being caught. He had known he was Harry's godfather long before Lily and James died, so he felt certain he had to escape, go to Hogwarts, and save Harry from danger.
It's no small feat that Sirius escaped from Azkaban, but the fact he does raises a lot of questions with casual Harry Potter fans. How could he escape the fortress, avoid the Dementors, and survive the violent seas that surround it? Without his Animagus form, the knowledge that Peter Pettigrew was posing a danger to Harry, and his severe malnourishment, he wouldn't have managed it at all. Because he breaks out, though, the Golden Trio learn everything they need to know about the Potters' betrayal. Although Sirius doesn't manage to clear his name due to Pettigrew's escape, he lives at 12 Grimmauld Place as a fugitive until he joins the Order of the Phoenix and meets his tragic end.
