They are! But, back when they first released, you didn't have guides or anything to help you complete these games, other than Nintendo Power. Games like Final Fantasy and Dragon Warrior aren't as difficult as something like Battletoads, but they were some of the first of their kind, and were pretty hard at the time.
Not saying they can't be beaten - but they are still difficult to beat.
