I've tested the most luxurious mattresses on the market but I've slept on many budget beds, too — and some of the best cheap mattresses I've tried have instantly impressed me (sometimes more than the premium ones.) Two low-cost beds that left me snoozing happily are on sale this Labor Day: the SweetNight CoolNest and the EGOHOME Black 12" Foam mattresses.

These 12" memory foam mattresses have a lot in common, beyond their affordable price tags. But there are some key differences to consider. As we test all our mattresses rigorously to see if they deserve a place in our best mattresses guide, I'll be comparing the performances and designs of the SweetNight and the EGOHOME. Then you can decide which is right for you.

While the EGOHOME is $50 cheaper than the SweetNight in a queen, the benefits of both brands are much the same: a 10-year warranty, a 100-night sleep trial, and free shipping and free returns.

SweetNight CoolNest vs EGOHOME Black mattress: Design & Materials

• Both beds are 12" tall and made from fiberglass-free all-foam layers
• The SweetNight uses specialist cooling materials such as PCM
• The EGOHOME uses copper gel and a graphene cover for basic cooling

On paper, the EGOHOME Black 12" and the SweetNight CoolNest look like the same mattress; both are 12" tall, fiberglass-free, are made from layers of foam, and are topped with grey, temperature-controlling covers. It's the kind of design you'll typically find in our best memory foam mattress guide. However, there are key differences.

The SweetNight has six layers of foam, with its most cooling layer sitting just beneath the surface. A PCM-infused foam (Phase Change Material) this heat-dissipating material and has been proven to lower skin temperature and improve human heat dissipation up to 25.6% (compared to conventional mattresses). On top is a nylon cooling cover that contains 20,000 air channels for increased breathability.

The EGOHOME has a much simpler design, with three internal foam layers. The top foam tier is infused with copper gel "to control moisture and reduce layers". The middle layer is infused with cooling gel to absorb and dissipate heat. The bottom foam layer has a higher density for support and durability. SweetNight CoolNest vs EGOHOME Black mattress: Comfort & Support

I've slept on both mattresses, and you can read about my sleep experience in my SweetNight CoolNest Mmeory Foam mattress review and my EGOHOME Black 12" Foam mattress review.

For the latter, I slept on the EGOHOME Black 12" Foam for almost a year and found it supportive throughout. I never woke up with aches or pains no matter what position I slept in (I'm a side and back sleeper, but I sometimes roll on to my stomach during warmer weather). It also proved to have sturdy sides, as I never felt unsupported, even when sleeping close to the edge.

Overall, its medium-firm feel will accommodate most sleepers. But look to the Siena Signature, another budget foam mattress, if you're a strict back or stomach sleeper who prefers a firm bed.

The SweetNight CoolNest, on the other hand, has a slightly softer (though still medium-firm) feel that's best suited for back and side sleepers.

My pressure relief tests found that it offers plenty of cushioning at the hips and shoulders (key pressure points in side sleepers) but it may not be suitable for stomach sleepers. In fact, when a front sleeper in my testing panel tried the CoolNest, she admitted her hips felt unsupported.

I found both mattresses to have stable edge support and good motion isolation, with both offering a balance of comfort and support to back and side sleepers.

SweetNight CoolNest vs EGOHOME Black mattress: Temperature Control

• The CoolNest is cool to the touch and offers specialist temperature control

As the CoolNest is a dedicated cooling model (hence, the name), you may think pitting the EGOHOME Black 12" Mattress against it isn't a fair fight. However, there are plenty of non-cooling beds in our best cooling mattress guide (in which the CoolNest sits as our top budget pick for side sleepers), plus the EGOHOME does feature quite a bit of temperature regulation.

When I first unboxed the CoolNest, I was surprised at how cool to the touch it felt. Other testers at our sleep lab remarked on its coolness, too. As lead tester, I slept on the CoolNest throughout an array of summer heatwaves (in a bedroom without AC) and I have to say that I never woke up once in the middle of the night feeling stuffy or breaking out in night sweats.

Rewind to last summer, when I slept on the EGOHOME though heatwaves, and you've got yourself a different experience. While it didn't turn into a literal hotbed, I saw a stark difference between the EGOHOME's heat retention and the SweetNight's cooling properties.

You can spring for a cooling cover upgrade at EGOHOME, but it will take a queen to $419 (if you pick medium-firm). I've yet to try this "maximum cooling performance" upgrade, but it may be a worthwhile investment if you're a hot sleeper.

Even the best mattresses act as a sponge for bad odors, absorbing everything from body oils to sweat to your unwashed feet. And while a quick spritz of lavender or sandalwood might mask the scent, the best way to prevent your mattress from smelling is this five-second hack.

The 5-second daily hack

When you wake up, your first instinct might be to turn around and make the bed. (That, or leave the sheets in a bundle until you’ve had some coffee.)

But this seemingly good habit could be the reason your mattress smells, notes Dr. Shanina C. Knighton, PhD, RN, CIC, an infection prevention expert and Research Associate Professor at the Frances Payne Bolton School of Nursing at Case Western Reserve University.

“If [the bedding] is still damp from sweat, pulling the covers up seals that moisture and warmth against the mattress,” explains Dr. Knighton. “You have just slowed the drying and handed odor, dust mites, and microbial growth a more comfortable place to sit all day.”

Instead, she encourages you to “throw the covers back.” This allows the bed to breathe, and for sweat and body oils to escape — so they won't sit stewing all day.

It's important to fold back the sheets properly. Don't just leave them screwed up in a ball. Once that's done, you can grab a coffee. When you come back, it's time to make the bed. But not, Dr. Knighton warns, until it's fully dry.

“A tidy bed should not outweigh a dry bed,” she says.

The weekly follow-up

Dr. Knighton recommends washing your pillow cover and sheets at least once a week, particularly during hot weather. This prevents sweat and moisture from building up, eliminating the risk of bad smells.

And while your bedding is in the wash, you can do a more thorough airing of your mattress. Strip it bare, open the window, and allow the fresh air to lift away any embedded sweat or odors. The result is a cleaner mattress with minimal effort.

The bad smell you should never ignore

Over time any mattress will start to emanate a slight odor. Often this will disappear with a quick airing and some fresh sheets. But there are two lingering smells that you should never ignore.

First, an earthy smell, like a damp basement. This is a sign that your mattress might be infected with mold. Look for black marks and spot treat them with a hydrogen peroxide solution. (Patch test a small area before using hydrogen peroxide on your bed).

Second, a musty, sweet scent, similar to spoiled raspberries. While it seems innocuous, this is often a sign of bed bugs. Diatomaceous earth can be used to limit a bed bug infestation but if the critters are calling your mattress home, you might need to contact the professionals.

While it’s possible your mattress can recover from mold or bed bugs, if you’ve noticed either smell, it might be time for a replacement.

It's a luxury spend, but your sleep will thank you for the indulgence. My first instinct was bleach and a hot wash. However, while chlorine bleach can strip away soap residue, chlorine reacts with mineral build-up to lock in hard-water film. Despite the heavy washing, my gray sheets were even duller.

But I've found a fix. This simple two-step pre-wash soak starts with oxygen bleach and dish soap to lift leftover detergent, and finishes white vinegar to cut through gray film. My sheets are back to their sparkling white best — here's how.

The 2-step pre-wash laundry soak

These ingredients are safe to use on most fabrics. However, oxygen bleach should be kept away from silk, wool and leather (plus anything with wooden buttons), while vinegar shouldn't be used on delicate materials such as silk and rayon.

Our first hero ingredient is oxygen bleach. This mild bleach contains either sodium percarbonate, hydrogen peroxide or sodium perborate, which form bubbles when mixed with water. These oxygen bubbles help gently lift away stains and gray film, without damaging the fabrics.

Adding a squirt of dish soap helps boost the stain removal. Dish soap is good at breaking down oils and grease (hence why you use it on your dirty dishes.) In this pre-soak, it helps lift the oily film left behind by your detergent.

Step two involves white vinegar. This kitchen staple is a cleaning must-have, used for everything from freshening up toilets to washing pillows. Vinegar contains acetic acid, which cuts through the gray grease of soap residue. It also breaks down mineral deposits, like the calcium left from hard water.

How to use this pre-wash soak

In my experience, the bright white results last for several months but if you're in a hard water area, your sheets may need regular soaks to stay sparkling. However, this soak shouldn't be completed more than every two weeks, as acidic vinegar can break down fabrics. Depending on the severity of your stains, the soak can take upwards of 6 hours. But only around 20 minutes of hands-on washing is required. Here's how to do it:

• Fill a basin or bathtub with warm water
• Add roughly half a cup of oxygen bleach and mix well (check packet instructions for exact measurements)
• Submerge the sheets completely and leave to soak for up to 6 hours
• Drain the water and rinse the sheets to remove any leftover oxygen bleach
• In a basin of warm water, add a cup of distilled white vinegar and stir
• Submerge the sheets and leave to soak for 30 minutes to 1 hour
• Rinse and finish with your usual washing cycle

The final step: Machine wash your bed sheets

Once your pre-wash soak is completed, the final step is to machine wash your bed sheets. We recommend opting for a hot wash, as hotter water is better at lifting soils and stains, ensuring even brighter whites. However, always follow the care instructions to avoid damaging your bedding.

How to choose bed sheets that won’t turn grey

It is possible to choose sheets that stay sparkling for longer. First, opt for natural fibers. Materials like 100% long-staple cotton or linen take longer to develop a gray detergent film than synthetic fabrics such as polyester and microfiber. It's a case of oleophilic versus hydrophilic: synthetic fibers attract and absorb oil, most natural fibers absorb water.

Weave is also important. A loose, open weave like percale allows laundry detergent to wash through easily. Tight weaves, like sateen, hold onto soap residue. This build-up will quickly lead to graying.

While eventually all bedding starts to dull, sheets made from natural fibers with open weaves take longer to develop a gray finish. That bright white will stay intact for years to come.

I tried a range of cleaning methods to see if any of them could restore my pillow to bright white again, and while some did lift a few stains here and there, only one ingredient worked all over... a $1 staple you'll find in most medicine cabinets.

Here's how I used this unassuming stain remover to restore my pillow to bright white – and why it works when other methods fail.

The $1 ingredient that restored my yellowing pillow to bright white

Antiseptic 3% hydrogen peroxide is a medicine cabinet staple, but it's also excellent for removing yellow stains from pillows.

After being told by textile and cleaning specialists about its stain-busting properties, I decided to give it a try on my yellowing pillow.

To use hydrogen peroxide as a safe cleaner, always use a 3% concentration of hydrogen peroxide, avoid mixing it with other chemicals, and protect hands with gloves. As hydrogen peroxide has a mild bleaching effect, avoid using on dark-colored fabrics and delicate materials such as silk, wool and cashmere.

Turns out, there's good reason why 3% hydrogen peroxide has a reputation as a wonder ingredient. It restored my pillows to mint condition, and it required low effort and an even lower cost.

Here's how I used it to lift deep-set stains from my yellowing pillow...

How I used hydrogen peroxide to remove yellow pillow stains

To get rid of deep-set, yellowish stains, I placed my pillow in an empty bathtub. I then filled a clean spray bottle with 3% hydrogen peroxide and spritzed it all over the pillow and then let it sit for 30 minutes.

After the half hour was up, I worked the hydrogen peroxide into the pillow with an old toothbrush. As the electric toothbrush scrubbed away at the pillow, I noticed the stains beginning to fade and flake off.

Following the pillow's cleaning instructions, I placed the hydrogen peroxide-covered pillow into the washing machine for 1 hour. Once the cycle was over, I opened the washing machine to reveal a bright white pillow that's back to its pristine self.

To dry the pillow, I absorbed any excess water with a light-colored towel and then place it in the dryer with three tennis balls for extra fluffiness (yes, the hack works).

The kit you'll need

The pillow cleaning methods I don't recommend

The safest pillow cleaning method is following the care label to the letter, which usually involves an appropriate laundry detergent and water setting.

However, ingredients like 3% hydrogen peroxide are perfect if your pillow stains are too stubborn for laundry detergent.

That said, for the sake of science I tried the weirdest pillow cleaning ingredients that have been doing the rounds on social media. Unfortunately, the majority of them are best avoided...

For example, CleanTok heralds vodka as a stain remover. I was not impressed by the results. I also tested shaving foam after seeing so many videos hyping its stain-removing powers, only to be left disappointed by my still yellow pillows.

And while some hacks sort of worked, they came with a disclaimer. Like the viral lemon slice soak — research shows that citrus acid degrades fabric. Another popular cleaning staple, baking soda, should not be used on your memory foam pillows

My advice? If you want to keep the best pillows in top condition, follow the care label to the letter.

To see if this memory foam design deserves a place among the best mattress toppers we've tested, I slept on the DreamCloud Softer Mattress topper. Here are my full thoughts.

DreamCloud Softer Mattress Topper: Review in brief

The DreamCloud Mattress Topper is made from 2" of gel memory foam and comes in two different feels; Softer and Firmer. I opted to test the Softer design, which DreamCloud promises will add a layer of luxury to my mattress.

And there's no better way to put the DreamCloud Softer topper through its paces than to place it on one of the firmest mattresses on the market. If this topper can turn the Plank Firm Luxe mattress into a cushioned bed, it's able to soften almost anything.

Delivering an immediate hit of softness, the DreamCloud topper contours to the shoulders, hips and knees. For side sleepers, this reduces pressure build-up so you can avoid numb arms and legs. Without the topper, side sleeping on the Plank Firm Luxe has been uncomfortable. With the topper, I can lie on my side without losing feeling in my shoulder.

It's not completely changed the feel — I can tell there's a firm mattress beneath — but the plush design will soften your hard bed. And if you're looking for a way to bring new life to an aging mattress, the DreamCloud topper can mask early signs of sagging.

Admittedly the design is too soft for back and stomach sleepers, but that's not exactly a flaw. In fact, DreamCloud makes a Firmer topper if it's support you're after.

However, the lack of straps or anti-slip tech might be an issue. I've not noticed any movement from the topper yet but it has caused my fitted sheet to bunch.

At $199 for a queen in the ongoing DreamCloud sale, the Softer topper is good value for money. Particularly as DreamCloud has impressed us before with the quality of materials. Based on the feel and pedigree, this mattress topper should deliver several years of comfort.

The DreamCloud Classic Hybrid mattress is our top-rated mattress in a box, in part because it's such good value for money. The DreamCloud toppers seems to follow a similar mindset: high quality comfort at a price that won't break the bank.

In the year-round DreamCloud mattress sale, a queen topper is $199. (Softer or Firmer, they both cost the same.) Here's a breakdown of the prices you can expect to pay:

That's around mid-range for a mattress topper. In comparison, the 2" Casper mattress topper is $148.50 for a queen at Casper, while Tempur-Pedic's 3" Tempur-Adapt topper has an MSRP of $359 for a queen (although it's often reduced to around $249).

However, if you are on a tight budget, there are cheaper options available. For example, the Lucid 2" memory foam topper is just $69.99 for a queen at Lucid.

DreamCloud offers a 100-night home trial and a one-year warranty. The 100-night trial is good for a mattress topper but the warranty is surprisingly short (we often see 3-5 year trials for bed toppers). This is a shame, as DreamCloud mattresses come with a 365-night trial and a lifetime warranty, which is among the best in the industry.

DreamCloud Softer Mattress Topper: Design & materials

• The topper is made from gel memory foam and the cover is woven with 'cooling fibers'
• It measures 2" tall — on the thin side for a mattress topper
• It's available in a Sofer or Firmer feel

The DreamCloud mattress topper is made from gel memory foam and measures 2" tall.

This is on the thin side for a bed topper but it falls within our recommend thickness range of 2-4". Any thinner than that and you might find the topper makes minimal difference to your mattress.

Utilizing a single slab of gel memory foam to deliver cushioning, both the Softer and Firmer topper feature a similar design. The main difference is the firmness of the gel foam.

The topper is finished with a breathable cover woven with cooling yarns. The underside of the cover doesn't feature any anti-skid tech, but DreamCloud suggests covering the topper with a fitted sheet should be enough to keep it in place.

DreamCloud Softer Mattress Topper: Performance

• Is delivered rolled and vacuum packed but is ready to go in minutes
• Softer design adds thick cushioning to even firm mattresses
• Minimal heat build-up but the cover isn't cool to the touch

I slept on the DreamCloud Softer mattress topper for two weeks, placed on the Plank Firm Luxe mattress.

Set-up

Although the DreamCloud Softer mattress topper is delivered vacuum packed and rolled, it takes just minutes to set-up. I ordered a full size and had no problem unboxing it myself. Even a queen size shouldn;t present much hassle for the average person.

Once unboxed, the topper looked ready to go. You often need to wait several hours for a memory foam mattress to finish expanding but this bed topper required a minimal waiting period.

Memory foam has a reputation for off-gassing (an unpleasant chemical odor) but the odor from the Softer topper was mild. With the windows open, the scent disappeared in the hours before bedtime.

With no straps, you simply place the Softer Topper on the mattress and hope your fitted sheet keeps it in place. I was skeptical — a bunching mattress encasement has left me wary of sliding bedding — but throughout the testing period the topper hasn't shifted. My sheet has shifted, however.

The cover comes with a zip but removing it voids the warranty — so keep it on. As a result, the topper is spot clean only.

Score: 4.5 out of 5

Comfort & support

Mattress toppers are often used to soften a firm bed — that's what you can expect from the DreamCloud Softer Topper. The 2" of memory foam adds a hit of instant plushness to any mattress.

And I can say that with some confidence. I added the DreamCloud topper to the Plank Firm Luxe mattress, a bed that I class as 'firm' on the mattress firmness scale. The Plank has little cushioning and only subtle pressure relief, making it too hard for most side sleepers.

The DreamCloud Softer Topper has changed that. Soft foams contour to the hips and shoulders, reducing pressure build up. Normally if I side sleep on the Plank Firm Luxe, I have to shake my arm out to get any feeling back. With the Softer topper, I wake up with fresh shoulders.

The quality memory foam also gives a touch of luxury to my mattress. It's not quite up to the level of the best hotel-style mattresses but if you want an indulgence that won't break the bank, it's a good choice.

It's not a totally transformative mattress topper. While the DreamCloud Softer topper makes a big difference, you can still feel the firm bed beneath. A thicker design, such as the Tempur-Pedic Tempur-Adapt, might turn the Plank Firm Luxe into one of the best mattresses for side sleepers.

For back and stomach sleepers, the DreamCloud Softer topper is too soft. In this case, it's better to opt for the Firmer design for DreamCloud.

DreamCloud claims the gel-infused memory foam, breathable cover and cooling yarns give this mattress topper a cooler feel. As a slab of memory foam on top of a mattress that already struggles with temperature regulation, I was hesitant...

However, during the testing period I've experienced some warm nights and the DreamCloud has maintained a neutral feel throughout. There's minimal heat trapping, which means I don't wake up sweaty.

But it's not cool-to-touch and while the temperature regulation features are decent, it's unlikely to compare to a cooling topper like the Molecule CopperWELL Mattress Topper.

DreamCloud Softer Mattress Topper: User review

The DreamCloud Softer Mattress Topper doesn't currently have any reviews at DreamCloud. But I've scoured the web and found a handful of reviews on the DreamCloud Amazon store.

Overall, customers are positive, with several claiming that using the mattress topper has saved their sleep. Side sleepers in particular note that the Softer has helped lessen shoulder and hip pain.

Negative reviews are few and far between, although one customer complains about the overall quality of the mattress topper and another user notes that it's made minimal difference to their bed.

DreamCloud Softer Mattress Topper: Should you buy it?

A 2" topper is never going to completely transform a too-firm mattress. But if you've been waking up with sore shoulders and numb hips, the DreamCloud Softer topper will add some much needed cushioning.

It can also bring new life to an old bed. If your once plush memory foam mattress is starting to feel a little flat, the DreamCloud topper will keep you comfortable while you save up for a new bed.

At $199 for a queen, we think this high-quality topper is good value for money. (And at $179 for a twin XL, it can rival the best toppers for college students.)

But what it can't do is transform a firm mattress into a side sleepers dream. For that, we recommend a thicker topper, like the Tempur-Pedic Tempur-Adapt topper. And while it does sleep relatively neutral, anyone finding their sleep plagued by night sweats should consider a dedicated cooling design.

Buy it if...

✅ You're waking up with sore shoulders: A thick layer of soft foam, the DreamCloud Softer topper cushions the touch points (shoulders, hips, knees) when you lie on your side.

✅ You want a topper for a college dorm: Dorm beds have a reputation for discomfort but this topper can add some padding. The affordable price tag and portable build also makes it a good pick for college living.

✅ Your once-plush mattress is feeling flat: If your mattress is reaching the end of its lifespan but you don't have the money / time / opportunity to buy a new one just yet, the DreamCloud Softer topper is a short term solution.

Don't buy it if...

❌ You want to totally transform the feel of your mattress: The 2" build is on the thinner end for a mattress topper (although is still falls within our recommended range). A thicker topper will be better if you're struggling on a very firm mattress.

❌ You want to add some extra support to your bed: Find yourself sinking uncomfortably far into your mattress? The Softer topper will only worsen the problem. Try DreamCloud's Firmer topper instead.

DreamCloud Softer Mattress Topper: Alternatives

Chlorine bleach can actually make the problem worse by reacting with the proteins in sweat and turning the fabric an even darker yellow. Keeping up with routine bedding care and cleaning is essential, but to bring yellowed cases back to bright white, the secret lies in stripping the embedded oils using a simple two-ingredient pre-soak.

The two-ingredient soak

This soak method is intended primarily for durable fabrics like cotton and polyester blends. Do not use this method on delicate or natural fibers such as silk, bamboo, viscose, modal, or fabrics containing elastane/spandex, as these materials can be weakened, damaged, or shrunk by exposure to these soaking ingredients.

To strip away that embedded oil layer, first fill a basin or clean sink with hot water to help loosen the hardened lipids (fats and body oils). For a quick pre-treatment, add half a cup of baking soda and one cup of distilled white vinegar.

The immediate rush of carbon dioxide gas creates rapid effervescent bubbles that help physically agitate and dislodge surface residue from the fabric fibers. Submerge your pillowcases completely and let them soak for 2 to 4 hours.

If you have stubborn, set-in yellowing and want to maximize the chemical strengths of each ingredient, try a sequential soak. To a basin of hot water, add half a cup of baking soda and stir until dissolved. Its alkaline properties will immediately go to work breaking down the greasy buildup. Let the pillowcases soak for 30 minutes.

Afterward, wring them out and transfer them to your washing machine, adding one cup of distilled white vinegar to the rinse cycle to dissolve any remaining detergent residue and completely lift the yellow stains.

Alkaline baking soda breaks down organic grease and body oils, while acidic vinegar dissolves mineral deposits and soap scum. Used in separate steps, they alter the wash water’s pH to chemically release and remove embedded residues from the cotton fabric weave.

The final step

If weather permits, skip the dryer and hang your them outdoors on a clothesline. The UV rays from direct sunlight act as a free bleaching agent that naturally brightens white cotton.

Keep in mind that direct sunlight is not a substitute for proper washing. While UV rays help naturally brighten white fabric and kill germs, sunlight alone won't remove body soil.

Once dry, pillowcases emerge remarkably crisp and bright, completely free of dingy yellow patches.

Helix's pillow collection includes a variety of designs, with the Down and Feather pillow (down to $79 from $98 at Helix) being the only instalment to feature feathers or down fibers. But can the Helix Down and Feather earn a coveted spot in our 2026 best pillow guide?

I had high expectations for this Helix pillow, as we awarded glowing reviews to both the Helix Talalay Latex Pillow and the Helix Cooling Memory Foam Pillow. However, instead of relying on latex foam and memory foam for support and comfort, the Helix Down and Feather Pillow relies on a mixture of supportive feathers and cushioning white down. Its dual-core design aims to maintain the pillow's plumped-up shape and prevent over-sinkage for optimal alignment.

I slept on a standard-sized Helix Down & Feather Pillow for three months (for reference, our pillow testing methodology dictates that a two-week testing period is sufficient), and I can say that it's the closest I've got to sleeping on a five-star hotel pillow.

As a side and back sleeper, I find that the Down and Feather Pillow provides comfort to both sleep positions. The softness of the white-down outer core adds plush, contouring sinkage, but its supportive inner chamber of feathers adds support and loft for side sleepers. Hot sleepers will also appreciate the breathable mixture of cotton and natural fill, but stomach sleepers will need something with a lower loft to prevent strain.

The Down and Feather Pillow is the cheapest of Helix's collection, and you pretty much always find a standard on sale for $79. However, we have seen it as low as $72.03 during bigger mattress deals events and federal holidays such as the forthcoming Labor Day mattress and bedding sales.

Helix Down & Feather Pillow: Price & deals

Helix has eight instalments in its pillow collection, and the Helix Down and Feather Pillow is the cheapest, typically costing $79 in a standard size. That said, the twin-pack Helix Dream Pillow Set contains two pillows and is typically $120, meaning that each pillow is $60.

Still, a regular sale price of $79 is actually the below the average cost of down pillow from a luxury sleep brand. For example, the Avocado Down Pillow is from $101 in a standard size at Avocado Green, while a standard-sized Goose Down Pillow is $277 at PlushBeds.

As for benefits, the trial and warranty Helix offers for its pillows is pretty decent. A 30-night trial provides enough time to know if a pillow is right for you, especially considering that PlushBeds do not offer a trial on any of their pillows. However, PlushBeds do offer a longer warranty of two years compared to Helix's one-year pillow warranty.

Avocado Green also offers a one-year warranty on their Down Pillow, but goes the extra mile by throwing in a 100-night trial (for reference, a 100 nights is the standard mattress trial length), a rarity for pillows.

In terms of discounts, pillows are typically 20% off in the Helix mattress sales. This means that the regular price of a standard size goes from $98.75 (at MSRP) down to $79. Meanwhile, a king size is regularly $95 ($118.75).

However, during major sale events and federal holidays such as the Black Friday mattress sales and the Labor Day mattress sales, we often see Helix pillows at 25% off, taking a standard size to $74. During the 25% off Helix Memorial Day sale, we also offered an exclusive 27% discount code that took a standard size Down and Feather Pillow down to $72.03.

Helix Down & Feather Pillow: Design & materials

• Supportive inner chamber is made of 95% feathers and 5% down fibers
• Outer core is made from white down, and the cover is 100% cotton cambric
• According to Helix, the pillow is certified by Responsible Down Standard

Helix boasts that the Down and Feather Pillow has a " supportive inner chamber" design. If you're wondering what an "inner chamber" is, it's basically an inner core that holds a denser, firmer fill for more support. In this case, the inner chamber is made from 5% down and 95% feathers, with the latter providing supportive and even filling.

The two outer cores that surround the inner chamber are made from white down for soft, fluffy cushioning. The fill power of the white down is 550, a fill power used for good breathability and gentle cushioning.

Encasing these three layers of down and feather is a 100% cotton cambric cover with a 230 thread count, common for crisp hotel-style bedding. The cover features German Piping, a reinforced double stitched edge for stronger seams.

As for whether the down and feather is cruelty free or not, Helix claims that it is.

"Our Down & Feather Pillow is certified by Responsible Down Standard," reads the brand's FAQ page. "This ensures the humane treatment of the ducks and geese our filling is sourced from."

A Responsible Down Standard certification means no inhumane practices such as fore feeding and live plucking is involved in the production of the Helix Down and Feather Pillow. While the certification aims to "mitigate risks of down and
feathers coming from animals that have been subjected to unnecessary harm", this product is definitely not suitable for vegans.

Helix Down & Feather Pillow: Performance

I slept on the Helix Down and Feather Pillow in a standard size for three months and conducted a series of objective and subjective tests, as per our pillow testing methodology, to assess its overall performance.

Setup

The Down and Feather Pillow arrived in a reusable plastic bag, with a clear, zippered design and a ropy handle. The pillow is shipped in its original shape rather than compressed, so it's just a matter of taking the pillow out of the bag. As the pillow comes ready to use, set up requires minimal effort.

As for packaging, it's pretty sustainable as it consists solely of a reusable storage bag. There was also very little off-gassing, as the pillow's materials don't contain any synthetic materials such as memory foam.

Comfort and support

Before testing the Down and Feather Pillow, I'd always tested foam pillows, such as the Birch Organic Pillow and the Simba Hybrid Pillow. These pillows were packed with shredded foam that added easily-adjusted comfort and softness, but the foam filling did have a tendency to clump and spread unevenly — and this clumping could sometimes leave me waking up with neck pain.

However, from the first night of using the Helix Down and Feather Pillow, I was waking up feeling ache and pain free. Three months down the line, and the pillow has still retained its plump shape, delivering ample support.

I credit its shape retention to its inner chamber of 95% feathers, which is designed to provide a denser core and more even fill distribution than 100% down pillows and down-alternative pillows. Meanwhile, the white down outer core provides the soft, cushioning feel of luxury hotel bedding.

The down and feather blend provides a balance of support and cushioning that's perfect for back and side sleeping. As a side and back sleeper, I need something to accommodate both positions, and I found that the Down and Feather Pillow does just that.

Its pillow loft is high enough to support my neck when I'm side sleeping, but its fill is soft and malleable enough to create a medium loft for back sleeping. However, stomach sleepers may need something with a lower loft, such as the Helix Talalay Latex Pillow.

To objectively test the Helix Down and Feather Pillow's comfort and support , I placed a 10lb weight (roughly equivalent to an adult head) on the center of the pillow.

I waited for five minutes and once removed, the pillow's surface began to slowly rise within the first 10 seconds. However, it didn't regain its original shape even five minutes after we removed the weight (for reference, we've tested some pillows that spring back into shape in 10 seconds), but I should point out that the indentation wasn't that deep to begin with.

Overall, the Down and Feather Pillow balances soft cushioning and dense support rather well, but if you need a firm pillow with a quick response rate, try out the Saatva Latex Pillow.

Temperature control

While the Helix Down and Feather Pillow isn't a specialist cooling model such as the Helix Cooling Memory Foam Pillow, it has all the ingredients for a pillow that handles temperature regulation exceptionally well.

Both down fibers and feather are naturally breathable as they create airflow paths, while the 100% cotton cambric cover is lightweight, airy, and moisture-wicking for a cooler sleep.

I slept on this pillow throughout the summer months, and that includes during excruciating heatwaves in a bedroom with no AC, and I never once spent the night searching for the cool side of the pillow or felt like the pillow was retaining heat. Overall, most people (including hot sleepers) should feel comfortable using this pillow.

Helix Down & Feather Pillow: Durability & care

You should aim to replace your pillow every one to two years, but we test pillows for durability as some models don't even reach the one-year mark without succumbing to wear and tear.

Here's what we thought of the Helix Down and Feather Pillow in terms of durability, quality, and maintenance...

Build quality

The Helix Down and Feather Pillow comes with a one-year warranty, which is pretty reasonable when you consider that the average lifespan of a pillow is around one to two years. That said, good-quality feather and down pillows can last up to three to five years, so I'm a tad disappointed that the warranty doesn't last a little longer. In comparison, Tempur-Pedic offer a five-year warranty with their pillows.

We also usually assess quality and durability by looking at customer reviews, with Helix customers awarding the Down and Feather Pillow an overall score of 3.6 out of 5 stars (from over 300 user ratings).

I should point out that 54% of online reviewers awarded a 4 or 5 star rating to the pillow, praising how it seems "made to last" and "worth the money". Happy customers also love how the pillow provides a balance of comfort and support and a medium height for combination sleepers.

However, critics focus on the feel, with some believing it is too soft and others believing its much firmer than down pillows should be. Some side sleepers also feel that there could be more fill and a higher loft.

In my opinion, the Down and Feather Pillow has retained its shape really after three months of regular use. I also feel the build quality (no feathers found on my bed so far) is high and that if a five-star hotel, and I definitely believe it's worth the $79 it goes for.

Care and maintenance

As the cotton cover isn't removable, we reccomend using a pillowcase or pillow encasement to protect the pillow from spills and yellow stains.

Spot clean-only and dry clean-only pillows can be super annoying and high maintenance to clean, but the Helix Down and Feather Pillow is fortunately machine-washable and dryer-friendly. The label permits a machine wash in cold water with mild detergent and a tumble dry on a low heat setting. Overall, you're looking at an easy clean.

Should you buy the Helix Down & Feather Pillow?

If you're looking for a luxury hotel-style pillow under $100 no matter when you buy, then the Helix Down and Feather Pillow should be your top choice. Its loft is deal for side and back sleepers, but plenty of stomach-sleeping and combination-sleeping customers have praised its soft, cushioning feel, too.

If you need a lower loft or prefer a firm or responsive pillow, the Helix Down and Feather Pillow may be too soft and plump for you. However, the gentle contouring and durable core does provide plenty of comfort and support, with its evenly-distributed feel providing plenty of pressure relief and relieving neck pain.

It also provides a refreshing headrest thanks to its naturally breathable, moisture-wicking materials, making it suitable enough for hot sleepers and anyone linving in a warmer climate.

At $79, it's an upper-mid-range to luxury spend, but it's a lot cheaper than other premium down and feather pillows from major sleep brands, with some competitors costing over $300. Regular deals and holiday discounts keep the price under $80 for a standard size, and the one-year warranty and 30-night sleep trial are decent benefits.

Overall, the Helix and Feather Pillow is an excellent choice if you want a soft, cradling feather and down pillow for side, back, and combo sleeping. It's also a worthwhile investment if you want a pillow that retains its shape and requires minimal fluffing.

I wasn't at all surprised by the Sunset Luxe's high quality, as Helix is a brand that features in our best mattress guide. As both a side sleeper and lead tester for the Helix Sunset Luxe mattress review, I was impressed by the relief it provided for my pressure points thanks to its plush, cradling foam layers.

So, if you sleep on your side and are shopping for a new mattress, here's why I's buy the Helix Sunset Luxe (plus, why I wouldn't wait until the Labor Day mattress sales are in full swing before buying it).

Ultra-plush comfort for side sleepers...

Want a mid-range alternative? Try this...

When I tested the Sunset Luxe at home and at our sleep lab, I quickly discovered that pressure relief is the highlight of this premium bed. Pressure relief scored 4.07 stars out of 5 as the Sunset Luxe soothes shoulders and hips, displaying the most sinkage out of all the tested mattresses in these key side-sleeping areas.

As for subjective feedback, I found the bed to have plenty of contouring, as did my fellow mattress testers. One tester even awarded the Sunset Luxe a perfect 10 or pressure relief.

However, stomach and back sleepers will find the Sunset Luxe far too soft. If you're a back and side sleeper, I recommend taking a look at the Helix Midnight Luxe mattress. The Helix Midnight Luxe is No 1 in our best mattress for side sleepers guide, but its medium-firm feel also packs plenty of lumbar support for back sleeping. It costs the same as the Sunset Luxe, too.

Whether you choose the Sunset Luxe or the Midnight Luxe, now is the time to invest in a Helix mattress. You don't have to wait until Labor Day itself to rake in the savings, as we've never seen a discount bigger that 25% on the Sunset Luxe.

We've tested nearly every bed in the Saatva mattress line-up and they've impressed us across the board with their high-quality build. There are a few features you can expect to find in a Saatva bed that contribute to this improved durability:

• Dense foams: Denser foams are more durable, as they can better withstand the constant compression of a sleeping body.
• Steel coils: Like mattress foams, bed coils need to bounce back into place when pressure is lifted. The 14.5 gauge recycled steel coils found in many Saatva mattresses should stay strong even after repeated use.
• Lumbar Zone Quilting: Saatva's specialist lumbar zone quilting adds support to the middle third of the bed. This keeps you comfortable and helps prevent dips from forming.

How long does a Saatva mattress last: Mattress by mattress

Saatva Classic

Saatva's flagship Classic mattress is an innerspring hybrid. In our Saatva Classic mattress review, we praised its overall build quality, as it uses carbon steel coils and a dual-spring system to prevent sagging, Saatva estimates the Classic will last for 10-15 years.

Our test data backs this up. Our Saatva Classic mattress has been flown across the Atlantic, looked over by airport security, driven around the UK and undergone our rigorous mattress testing process (multiple times). Bar a few loose threads, it's still looking in top condition.

Saatva Memory Foam Hybrid

The most affordable luxury bed in Saatva's line-up, the Saatva Memory Foam Hybrid mattress is estimated to have a 10-15 year lifespan. As well as dense foams and steel coils, the Memory Foam Hybrid features Lumbar Zone Quilting. This finishing touch should prevent dips and sags from forming.

In our Saatva Memory Foam Hybrid mattress review, our tester praised the "outstanding value for money" of this hotel-style bed, as well as the "beautifully handcrafted build".

Saatva Rx

Designed for sleepers with chronic back pain, the Saatva Rx mattress is packed with support features. This includes triple-tempered 14.5-gauge recycled steel coils and high density foam.

Based on this, Saatva estimates the Rx will last for 10-15 years. (Our testing team noted the "construction and quality of [the] materials" during our Saatva Rx Mattress review.)

We think the Rx is one of the best mattresses for back pain you can buy. If you do invest, it should provide years of relief.

Saatva Latex Hybrid

Latex foams are known for their longevity so it's no surprise that the Saatva Latex Hybrid has an estimated lifespan of 15 years plus.

Our Saatva Latex Hybrid mattress review team noted that alongside the latex foams, this bed features reinforced edges, targeted lumbar support and an antimicrobial cover — all of which can add to the longevity.

Saatva Contour5

The best memory foam mattresses typically have good longevity (comapred to hybrids) and as Saatva's only memory foam bed, the Contour5 is predicted to last 10-15 years.

The Contour5 takes it's name from the 5lb memory foam that's found at the core of the bed. This super-dense foam delivers full-body contouring as well as a decent lifespan. Throughout the testing period, our Saatva Contour5 review team didn't notice any dipping or sagging.

Saatva Zenhaven

The Saatva Zenhaven has an estimated lifespan of 15 years or more. As well as layers of latex foam, this mattress is dual-sided, which can enhance durability. (When one side starts looking a little tired, simply flip it over.)

In our Saatva Zenhaven mattress review, our experienced tester noted that the complex build prioritizes longevity and that the sides are stronger than "other latex mattress [she's] tested."

However, Saatva's lifetime warranty only applies if you place your Zenhaven mattress on "a layer of solid surface (i.e. plywood, masonite board) over platform bed slats." Without this, you can expect a shorter lifespan.

Saatva Solaire

The Solaire is Saatva's only adjustable firmness mattress and it has an estimated lifespan of 25 years. That's a lot of time to use a mattress.

Our Saatva Solaire mattress review team found the build quality and careful construction helped justify the price tag.

Saatva HD

Designed for bigger bodies, the HD mattress is a premium bed with an increased weight capacity. Durability is at the heart of this bed and it has an estimated lifespan of 15-20 years.

While many other Saatva mattresses feature 14.5 gauge coils, the HD uses stronger 12.5-gauge tempered recycled steel coils. (That's 25% stronger than the industry standard, according to Saatva.)

The HD best suits heavier bodies. If you don't need the extra support, we recommend opting for the Classic. Not sure which is right for you? Consider a trip to a Saatva Viewing Room, where you can test them both out.

Does Saatva's lifetime warranty mean it's a mattress for life?

All Saatva mattresses come with a 'Friends for Life' lifetime warranty. This means that for as long as you own the mattress, Saatva will do what it can to keep it in top condition. But that doesn't mean your bed will last forever.

For the first two years of your ownership period, Saatva will replace your mattress free of charge. From year three onwards, Saatva will repair and recover your mattress for a $149 processing fee.

However, these conditions only apply if you find "defects in workmanship and materials, under normal residential care and use."

In other words, notmal wear and tear isn't covered by the warranty.

How to get your Saatva mattress to last longer

The lifespan of a Saatva mattress can only be an estimate. If you don't take care of your bed, you won't get 15 years of comfort. To ensure your hotel-style mattress lasts as long as possible, follow these steps below:

• Use a mattress protector: Mattress protectors prevent moisture from seeping into your mattress, where it can damage the materials. They also guard against mess from stains and spills.
• Make sure the mattress supports your body type: Not all Saatva beds are suitable for people weighing over 230lbs. Opting for the wrong build for you body type will not only be uncomfortable but it can cause the mattress to sag prematurely.

How to choose the best comforter for you

Not all comforters are made equal. When it comes to choosing one, consider whether you are looking for a comforter you can use all year-round, or one you can throw onto your bed during the chillier seasons. The biggest decision you'll need to make is whether you want a down or down alternative comforter - down comforters are harder to care for, which is something to keep in mind.

Material
Down comforters are made from duck or goose feathers and are known for their warmth and coziness. Goose down is fluffier than duck down, but both are good choices for providing warmth and sleep comfort. To ensure the down comforter you are buying uses ethically sourced materials, look for Responsible Down Standard certification.

Down alternative comforters are usually made from polyester-cotton blends and are much more affordable. Luxury down alternative materials include gel-fiber and the patented and breathable material PrimaLoft.

Fill power
Hot sleepers, when choosing the best comforter for you keep an eye on the fill power as the higher the number, the warmer your comforter will be. We'd recommend a light or all-season comforter. As a general rule, a fill power of 600 or higher is the best choice for winter use (and room temperatures below 60℉). Interestingly, a higher fill power doesn't mean a heavier comforter. You can also make a comforter feel warmer by adding a flannel cover.

Machine washability
For an easier laundry day, we’d suggest looking out for comforters that are machine washable. Some comforters are dry clean only though, and these are usually the more expensive down comforters. If you do score a machine washable comforter, keep in mind that it will take up a lot of space in your washer and dryer. We shake out and fluff our comforters mid-drying cycle to prevent clumping.

Sleep Number beds are different to most of the best mattresses you can buy online. These smart beds feature adjustable firmness, so you can make the mattress softer or firmer depending on your needs. For our testing team, that means waking up "more refreshed and with less joint pain."

"It's pricey compared with some other high-end beds, but it's really worth it for how much better it's made me and my partner feel each morning," says LeClair.

I'll level with you: there's no such thing as a cheap smart bed. (Yet... they're coming.) If you want a bed with a crowd pleasing feel that suits most sleepers, try the DreamCloud Classic Hybrid. It's $699 for a queen at DreamCloud and the plush top is soothing against aching joints.

However, Sleep Number does offer a more budget-friendly option for shoppers seeking personalized comfort for less.

Can a luxurious plank be a real contender for the best mattress you can buy online? That's the aim of the Plank Firm Luxe mattress, a double-sided hybrid bed with a super firm feel that promises to deliver non-stop support for your spine. I put it through our rigorous mattress testing methodology, to see how it performed.

I previously tested the original all-foam Plank Firm mattress and as a stomach sleeper, the stable support transformed my sleep. The Plank Firm Luxe mattress takes everything I loved about the Firm — even support, fantastic motion isolation, strong edges — and adds springs.

This hybrid build gives the Plank Firm Luxe mattress a more responsive feel. As a result, it's a bit more luxurious. It also turns the pressure relief up a tiny notch. With the springs responding to your movement, there's a bit more body contouring.

However, the Plank Firm Luxe is going to be a divisive mattress. For most side sleepers, it's a hard 'no' (and hard is the operative word). But when it comes to support, the Plank Firm Luxe shines. After sleeping on a queen size for over a month, and subjecting it to a series of tests in our Sleep Lab, here's my full review.

Plank Firm Luxe Mattress review: Price & trial

The Plank Firm Luxe mattress is an upper mid-range bed: it's an investment but not a premium purchase. A queen has an MSRP of $1,598 but frankly, you're never going to pay that much. A year-round 25% off mattress sale reduces a queen to $1,198.50.

Here's what you can expect to pay for a Plank Luxe mattress:

• Twin MSRP: $1,065 (normally sold at $798.75)
• Twin XL MSRP: $1,198 (normally sold at $898.50)
• Full MSRP: $1,465 (normally sold at $1,098.75)
• Queen MSRP: $1,598 (normally sold at $1,198.50)

That places it in a similar price bracket to the Helix Core mattress collection — a queen Helix Dawn Mattress is $1,183 in the 20% off sale ($1,478.75 MSRP). The Dawn is another hybrid bed with a firm feel that's designed for stomach and back sleepers, although it lacks the double-sided build of the Plank Luxe.

But when it comes to competitors, it's hard to find a decent rival for the Plank Firm Luxe — there are few flippable, super-firm hybrids out there. The original Plank is the best comparison and it's $999 for a queen in the sale. However, it's an all-foam design (and the best memory foam mattresses tend to be cheaper than their hybrid equivalents).

If it's only firmness you want, there are more affordable options available. For example, the Siena Signature is a firm bed and only $294 for a queen. But it probably lacks the durability of the Plank.

In terms of extras, a 120-night sleep trial is included, which should be more than enough time to adjust to the mattress. However, considering it's a double-sided bed — and as Extra Firm mattresses can take some time to get used to — I'd hoped for a longer trial. For example, rival DreamCloud offers a 365-night testing period.

Plank also offer a limited lifetime warranty. This is comparable to the best in the industry. Based on the warranty, quality of materials and design, we predict a good mattress lifespan of 6 to 10 years.

Plank Firm Luxe Mattress review: Design & materials

• The Plank Firm Luxe is a 12" double-sided hybrid mattress.
• Firm on one side, Extra Firm on the other, with a layer of springs in the middle
• However, there's no handles, which makes flipping difficult

The Plank Firm Luxe mattress is made of springs and foams, but its design is unusual for a boxed mattress. For a start, the spring layer sits in the center of the bed.

This is unusual — the best hybrid mattresses typically use springs at the base of the design, to provide support. But the Plank Firm Luxe is atypical and the spring core is crucial to its double-sided design.

On one side of the springs, you'll find the Firm side. This is a 2" layer of high density support foam, followed by 1" comfort foam, topped with a 1.5" quilted top.

On the other side of the springs is the Extra Firm side. Again, you'll find a 2" layer of high density support foam but in this case, it's only topped by 0.75" of quilted top.

That missing 0.75" of foam is in service of the double-firmness design. Even the quilting makes a difference in the feel; the Extra Firm side has a continuous stitch to create a flat surface, while the track-and-jump Firm side adds a bit more padding.

There's one frustrating flaw with the design, however — no handles. Considering this bed is designed to be flipped, it's annoying that you don't have anything to hold onto.

Plank Firm Luxe Mattress review: Sleep comfort

The original Plank Firm was the bed that made me fall in love with firm mattresses. So I was excited to get my hands on the Luxe, which promises to take all the benefits of the all-foam Plank and add a touch more luxury.

Within a night, I could tell the Luxe was going to deliver the same exceptional support. It's firm from head-to-toe, with no give at the hips. This keeps the body lifted and aligned, preventing strain on the lower back. As a stomach sleeper, it's just what I want. Our back sleeping testers were also pleased with the solid, stable, full-body support.

But side sleepers are going to struggle with the lack of cushioning. One of our testers is a lightweight side sleeper and she couldn't get comfortable on the Plank Firm Luxe. Also, the lack of handles is a strange oversight; when Frances and I tried to flip the bed, I almost got knocked out.

Comfort is subjective, however, and an unusual bed like the Plank Firm Luxe is never going to please everybody. So I conducted a series of objective lab tests to assess every side of the Luxe. Here's why it measures up as one of the best firm mattresses you can buy.

Temperature control: 3.56 out of 5

Temperature regulation refers to how well a mattress is able to maintain an even feel throughout the night. A mattress with good temperature regulation dissipates excess heat, keeping you around 65 to 70°F/18 to 21°C (the perfect temperature for sleeping). A bed that struggles with temperature control often gets uncomfortably warm during the night.

We use a thermal cam to objectively test temperature regulation. First, one of our testers rests on the bed for 15 minutes. During this period, we measure the temperature of the mattress every minute, to see how much it heats up. This gives us the maximum temperature increase, or MTI.

On the Firm side, we recorded an MTI of 15.1°F. That's one of the biggest jumps we've seen, even higher than the 12.4°F of the Helix Sunset Luxe mattress. In comparison the Saatva Classic, our top-rated bed, gained just 6.3°F.

On the Extra Firm side, the increase was less significant but pretty high — we recorded an MTI of 14.3°F. This is still a disappointing result but indicates the Extra Firm side absorbs less warmth than the Firm side.

An increased MTI doesn't necessarily mean a bed will sleep exceptionally hot, however. The Bear Elite Hybrid is the best cooling mattress we've tested and it had an MTI of 10.5°F. Which brings us to the next part of our test — the cool down.

After 15 minutes, our tester gets off the mattress and we continue to monitor the temperature for another 15 minutes. This provides the cooling rate.

The Firm side of the Plank dropped relatively quickly, losing 7.1°F in the first 5 minutes. This creates a rapid cooling rate of 1.46°F/minute, faster than the Saatva Classic's 1.26°F/m. However, the Saatva Classic did have less heat to lose in the first place.

The Extra Firm side showed a faster temperature drop off, with a rapid cooling rate of 2.2°F/min. This is impressive, beating even the Bear Elite Hybrid's rapid cooling of 2.06°F/m.

These results suggest that the Plank Firm Luxe warms up quickly. We unboxed the Plank Firm alongside the SweetNight CoolNest mattress and tester Frances noted that the SweetNight felt significantly cooler than the Plank, even under identical testing conditions. However, once you get off the mattress, it should dissipate heat relatively quickly.

During my subjective testing, I slept comfortably on the Plank Firm Luxe, even during several heatwaves. However, I did find the Extra Firm side stayed cooler than the Firm side. This is likely because the Firm side has more foams, which can trap more heat.

Plank does offer a cooling upgrade; a GlacioTex cooling cover. For hot sleepers, I think this is a worthwhile addition. I've tested a memory foam pillow with a GlacioTex cover and this cool-to-the-touch material should help offset the heat build-up of the Plank Luxe. Alternatively, the Bear Elite Hybrid does come in a firm feel and sleeps comfortably cool.

Pressure relief: 3.8 out of 5

When you lie on a mattress, your body presses against the bed. A mattress with good pressure relief will cradle these touch points to evenly distribute weight, while supporting the body to prevent the spine from sagging. This reduces pressure build-up so you wake up without aches and pains.

Before we dive into the pressure relief of the Plank Firm Luxe, it's worth noting that this mattress isn't designed to offer much cushioning. It's all about the support. If you want contouring, you're better off with a bed like the Saatva Classic or the Helix Midnight Luxe.

We use a 25kg weight (roughly one-third the weight of the average American) to objectively determine pressure relief. We place the weight in the hip and shoulder area, using a laser to measure how much it sinks. We measure again after 5 minutes. Once the weight is removed, we time how quickly the materials bounce back.

On the Firm side, the weight sank 3.1" at the hip and 3.25" at the shoulder. On the Extra Firm side, the weight surprised us by sinking fractionally further; 3.25" and 3.375", respectively. That's a fairly minimal difference and can possibly be chalked up to the padded top of the Firm side lifting the weight in certain places. Overall, that's an average sink of 3.18" for the Firm side, 3.31" on the Extra Firm side — or 3.25" overall.

That's firmer than most beds we've tested. The Siena Signature, an all-foam bed with minimal cushioning, had an average sink of 3.625". However, the Nectar Classic Memory Foam mattress has an overall sink of 2.875". So that might be the stronger choice if you don't want any contouring at all.

When we removed the weight from the mattress, the surface bounced back almost immediately. This fast recovery time makes it easy to change positions. And it means if you do toss and turn, the surface quickly springs back to shape to keep you supported.

Our hands-on testers agreed that this bed prioritizes support over cushioning. Side sleepers Frances Daniels felt significant pressure build-up on both the Firm and Extra Firm sides, particularly at her shoulders and hips.

During my at-home testing period, I was impressed by the support offered by both sides of the mattress. I'm a stomach sleeper and softer beds often put strain on my lower back. The Plank Firm Luxe kept my spine lifted and straight, alleviating any aches and pains. This puts it among the best mattresses for stomach sleepers and it's a benefit for back sleeping.

As a sometimes side sleeper, I did experience the occasional 'dead arm' on the Extra Firm side. This is less of a problem on the Firm side, as the added layer of foams delivers some cushioning.

But for dedicated side sleepers seeking support, I recommend the Saatva Classic. It simply has a better blend of cushioning and support. Although if you want a bed that holds your spine lifted all night long, the Plank Firm Luxe is an excellent choice.

I've previously slept on the Plank Firm, the all-foam version of the Luxe. Overall, the foam version had slightly less sink and a slightly faster recovery time. The more responsive Luxe delivers a touch more contouring, which means slightly better pressure relief, without losing any of that support.

Firmness

Mattress firmness is measured on a scale of 1 to 10. 1 indicates marshmallow soft, while 10 is rock hard. No surprise, all our testing team placed the Plank Firm Luxe mattress at the higher end of the scale.

Plank rates the Firm side as an 8 out of 10, or firm. We agree with that rating. Plank gives the Extra Firm side a mighty 10, which is the firmest you can get. We place it slightly under that, with a 9 — still exceptionally firm but with some slight contouring at the touch points.

The best mattresses for back pain often have a firm feel, to keep the spine lifted. I love how the Plank Firm Luxe straightens out my back. I have a tendency to 'shrimp' when I sit at my desk but lying on the Plank Luxe feels like I'm offsetting my terrible work posture.

It does somewhat live up to its namesake wooden plank but the addition of springs gives the bed a touch of body contouring. However, if you like to feel cushioned as you sleep, a hybrid with a plush Eurotop layer, such as the Saatva Classic, is a better choice.

Motion isolation: 3.75 out of 5

Good motion isolation stops movement from traveling across the mattress. It means if your partner tosses and turns, or your cat jumps on the bed, the movement won't bother you.

We use a drop test to objectively test motion isolation. Placing an accelerometer on one side of the mattress, we drop a 5kg slam ball on the other side. We then measure the force of the drop on the mattress (the initial impact absorption or IIA) and how long it takes the movement to come to an end (the decay rate).

I was blown away by the motion isolation of the all-foam Plank Firm but I wasn't expecting as much from the Luxe — the addition of springs tends to add bounce. However, both sides impressed. The Firm side had an initial impact of 4.47 m/s2, while the Extra Firm stunned with just a 3.8 m/s2 IIA. That's an average of 4.14 m/s2.

That means even if you jump onto the Plank Luxe, the mattress will absorb much of the movement straight away. In comparison, the Siena Mattress had a best in class IIA of 5.527 m/s2.

But while the initial impact absorption of the Plank Luxe impressed, the decay rate told a different story. We recorded an average decay rate of 3.632 seconds on the Firm side, 3.428 on the Extra Firm, for an overall of 3.53 seconds. That's slow. The Saatva Classic stopped all motion in just 1.703 seconds on average.

This result is reflected in our hands-on testing. As Frances described, there is some "wobble", particularly on the Extra Firm side. As a deep sleeper, I think the disruption is minimal and I could sleep through all but the heaviest of movements (I hardly felt Frances getting on and off the bed). However, light sleepers might find their rest disrupted by the occasional shudder.

Edge support: 4.5 out of 5

Perch on the side of your mattress and you'll appreciate the benefit of good edge support — this is what keeps you stable when you sit on the perimeter. It's particularly useful for those with limited mobility, who like to push against the mattress when getting in and out of bed.

We break out the 25kg weight to test edge support. Placing it 3" from the side and foot of the bed, we use a laser to measure how far the weight sinks. At the foot of the bed, the weight sank 3.625" on both the Firm and Extra Firm side. On the side of the bed, we measured a sink of 3.125" on the Firm feel, 3.375" on the Extra Firm (that's an average of 3.25").

This is among the best we've seen. It's comparable to the edge support of the Siena (which sank just 3.06" at the foot and 3.125" at the edge of the bed).

Our testers all felt comfortable sitting on the side of the bed. But for a true test, I asked my mom (and her dodgy knee) to try the Plank Luxe mattress. She noted there was some slight dipping but said she'd feel happy getting on and off the mattress, even at 3 a.m. when her joints are feeling rusty.

Edge support isn't just about sitting. Strong edges allow you to use the entire surface of the mattress, making it a useful feature for couples. To measure this, we use a roll off test. Yes, it's what it sounds like — we keep shuffling towards the edge until we roll off the bed.

We found you could stretch out all the way across the mattress. I was dangling off before gravity took over. If your partner likes to starfish, you won't roll off as you cling to the edge.

Plank Firm Luxe Mattress review: User reviews

The Plank Firm Luxe has an average of 4.6/5 stars from a total of 3,200+ user reviews. Many of the positive reviews praise the impact of reliable firm support on back pain, with one reviewer noting that since switching to the Plank Firm Luxe they wake up without back pain for "the first time in five years".

A few reviews note that the Plank Firm Luxe isn't as firm as they were expecting. One reviewer complains that it's not as firm as their tatami mat (a thin mat often placed on the floor). Firmness is subjective and while the Plank Luxe is hard, it's not going to be as hard as lying on the floor.

Alternatively, a few reviewers complain it's too firm — this is where the 120-night trial has its benefits. If you underestimated just how firm the Plank is, you should be able to return it for a refund.

Plank Firm Luxe Mattress review: Should you buy it?

If you're looking for full-body support in a mattress, the Plank Firm Luxe takes some beating. It's firm from corner to corner and edge to edge, ensuring every part of your body if held aloft. For stomach and back sleepers, that means no more pressure on your lower back.

The double-sided design is an unusual feature but it's not a gimmick. While the Extra Firm side comes out on top when it comes to full body support, the Firm side is better when you want more cushioning. It's a shame that a lack of handles makes flipping between the two a chore.

While support is the focus, the Plank Firm Luxe hasn't skimped on other features (well, maybe some pressure relief — I'll get to that later). The edge support is superb (4.5/5) while the motion isolation is strong (3.76/5). It's not a cooling bed but I stayed a relatively neutral temperature even during a hot summer and the GlacioTex cover upgrade is available for very hot sleepers.

With these factors in mind, it's among the best mattresses in a box we've tested. However, there's one demographic that should swerve this one: side sleepers. The Plank Firm Luxe features almost no cushioning at the shoulders and hips. As a result, if I rolled onto my side, I woke up with a numb arm and a dead hip. A traditional hybrid like the Saatva Classic will provide similar support and much better pressure relief.

In the standard sale, a queen is $1,198 ($1,598 MSRP). That's a good price for a specialist mattress. However, the Plank Firm is $999 in the same sale ($1,332 MSRP). For everyone but hot sleepers, I think it's worth saving your money. For hot sleepers, pay the extra; the Luxe sleeps much cooler.

Alternatives to consider

To put it simply, the Saatva Classic is the best mattress we've tested. It's hugely supportive from head to toe and the cushioned top helped ease the hip pain of our lead tester. We put it through our in-depth mattress testing and every inch of this luxury handcrafted build impressed.

If you find yourself struggling to sleep in a hot dorm room, the next best thing to a massive fan is a cooling mattress topper. 3 steps to choosing the right mattress topper

1. Choose a topper between 2" and 4" thick

A mattress topper's thickness is important when finding the right one for you. Too thin or too thick can both come with problems.

A too-thin mattress topper is unlikely to make any difference to the feel of the bed, while a too-thick mattress topper will be too squidgy and add unnecessary height to your mattress.

As a rule of thumb, don't choose anything thinner than 2" or anything thicker than 4".

2. Make sure it has foam

If you've been trawling Amazon for some cheap mattress toppers, you may find quilted ones that look good but appear awfully thin. That's because these are mattress pads, not mattress toppers.

These are often foamless — sometimes labelled as microfiber, synthetic-filled, hollow fiber, or down alternative mattress toppers — and the bad news is they make no difference to the feel of your bed whatsoever.

Instead, look for a mattress topper that is clearly labelled as containing foam, either memory foam or latex foam, to ensure it's capable of providing a thick layer of comfort.

3. Look for cooling materials

And last but not least, look for cooling materials or design features that keep your bed temperature neutral.

Some cooling features are better than others, however. For instance cooling gel-infused foam is no match against a specialist cooling cover made of GlacioTex or PCM.

Also, some materials are naturally cool, such as organic latex foam or moisture-wicking, breathable cotton or wool.

The SweetNight had a great overall performance, earning high scores in edge support, temperature control, and value for money. As a general rule, if you want a specialist cooling mattress, you have to pay a premium price. SweetNight, however, designed the CoolNest with both hot sleepers and "value-conscious customers" in mind. This budget-friendly bed is popular among Amazon shoppers, so we decided to test the 12" Memory Foam Mattress for ourselves. Is it good enough for our best mattress guide? And can it actually keep you cool overnight?

If we've learnt anything from testing the Siena Signature Mattress, it's that you don't have to break the bank to get a good bed. And that cheap foam beds can still offer plenty of cooling support. We were eager to see whether the CoolNest's memory foam build could dissipate heat to keep our testers comfortable.

Memory foam has a reputation for sleeping hot, so we pitted the SweetNight against fellow all-foam beds, the Siena and the Nectar Premier. But we also wanted to see if its cooling can stand on its own, so we've compared it to two of the best cooling mattresses we've tested: the Saatva Classic and the Bear Elite Hybrid. After vigorous testing, here are our honest thoughts and lab-based data on the the SweetNight CoolNest 12" Mattress.

Like the best cheap mattresses, the 12" CoolNest Memory Foam Mattress is pretty much always under $400 for a queen. The 40% off sale at SweetNight is omni-present, meaning you don't have to meticulously time your purchase to coincide with a major sale to grab a 12" queen for $399 (MSRP: $669.99). The 14" and 16" queen sizes are $469.99 and $599.99 respectively.

While the 12" CoolNest has been sold in a twin and Cal king, both are currently unavailable. However, these sizes are available if you upgrade to a 14" model. A full size, meanwhile, is usually $349.99 (it was sold around $359.99 in 2025) while a king is $449.99 (MSRP: $659.99).

As for benefits, SweetNight offers free shipping and returns, a 100-night sleep trial, and a 10-year warranty. These extras are downright reasonable for an online bed-in-a-box brand, although they lag behind the 365-night trial and lifetime warranty of competitor Nectar. 100 nights gives you plenty of time try the CoolNest at home while a mattress warranty lasting a decade will likely cover you throughout your entire mattress ownership.

Overall, we rate the CoolNest's value for money as impressive. Especially when you consider that a queen-sized dedicated cooling mattress can cost $1,000 more.

SweetNight CoolNest Memory Foam Mattress review 2026: Design

The 12" CoolNest Memory Foam Mattress is made up of six foam layers, all fiberglass-free and CertiPUR-US certified. Like the best mattresses in a box, the CoolNest arrives rolled up and packed inside a shipping box.

While the bottom foam layers are dense and designed for support and durability, the top layers focus on cooling comfort. The top-most foam tier is infused with Phase Change Material (PCM).

PCM is a specialist cooling fabric that has been proven to lower skin temperature, enhancing heat dissipation by up to 25.6% (compared to non-cooling mattresses). Below the PCM layer, there is a memory foam layer infused with cooling gel particles to absorb excess heat.

The cover is also designed for cooling. It's made from a 3D knitted cooling nylon fabric. SweetNight boasts that this nylon fabric contains over 20,000 micro-pores/cm² for enhanced airflow.

The SweetNight CoolNest is designed with a "5-zone support system". This means it should provide softer comfort to pressure points (such as the shoulders) and firmer support around the lumbar region.

SweetNight CoolNest Memory Foam Mattress review 2026: Sleep comfort

I'm a side and back sleeper weighing under 130lbs, so I like my mattresses on the plusher side. And while I don't tend to sleep hot, heatwaves combined with no AC means that extra temperature control from my mattress has been a must this summer. So, for three weeks in late July and early August, I slept on a full-size 12" CoolNest Memory Foam Mattress.

Before testing the CoolNest, I had slept on two quite different mattresses: the EGOHOME Black 12" Memory Foam Mattress and the Helix Sunset Luxe. The former is a budget all-foam bed while the latter is a luxury hybrid, but both are built to be the one of the best mattress for side sleepers.

Even if it didn't feel as plush as the Sunset Luxe or as supportive as the EGOHOME, the CoolNest did have one big advantage: it kept me more refreshed during a long hot summer. Let's see why I rate the CoolNest as the coolest bed I've ever tested and how it scored in other areas...

Temperature control: 4 out of 5

A mattress with good temperature regulation can prevent heat build-up to stay at a comfortable temperature while you're sleeping. It's a key testing area, as a heat-retaining, stuffy bed can lead to insomnia and night sweats.

While most mattresses feature some degree of temperature-regulating features, such as springs or open cell foams, dedicated cooling models like the CoolNest and Bear Elite Hybrid contain more advanced cooling tech, like PCM or GlacioTex.

To test how well the CoolNest regulates temperature, we used a thermal imaging camera to measure how much of my body heat the mattress absorbs and dissipates.

I lay on the CoolNest mattress for 15 minutes and, using the thermal cam, we recorded the temperature of the bed every minute. At its hottest point, we observed a maximum temperature increase (MTI) of 15.2°F — that means it was over 15°F warmer than when we started. We generally rate an MTI over 9°F as "poor" and a 1 out of 5, so this initial test result was disappointing.

For context, the hybrid Saatva Classic had an MTI of 6.3°F and the all-foam Siena Signature had an MTI of 9.8°F, despite neither being cooling mattresses. The cooling Bear Elite Hybrid, had an MTI of 10.5°F, which is still in the "poor" category, but almost 5°F cooler than the CoolNest.

However, after I left the mattress the CoolNest began to redeem itself through its ultra-fast heat dissipation. The bed kicked out heat at a rate of 2.1°F per minute, a cooling rate even quicker than the Bear Elite's 1.82°F per minute. That means when you get up, the bed starts dropping heat at top speed.

As for non-cooling models, the Saatva's dissipated heat at a rate of 1.16°F per minute, Siena's cooling rate was 1.52°F per minute, while the Nectar Premier dissipated heat at a relatively slow 0.9°F

15 minutes after I had stepped off, the CoolNest hadn't managed to return to the baseline temperature. But its cooling rate is still the fastest we've seen. In our lab-based tests, we gave the CoolNest an objective final score of 3.8 out of 5 (which we rate as "good").

Subjective feedback was much more glowing than our objective tests, with an overall subjective score of 4.5 out of 5 for the CoolNest 4.5. This is an excellent score, with the consensus among my testing panel being that the cover was noticeably cool to the touch and caused minimal heat build-up.

One tester, Ruth Jones, said: "I was impressed with how cool it was to the touch in the sleep studio, especially in comparison to the Plank Firm Luxe. Lying on it initially it did feel cool and even though it warmed up slightly when I was on there, it stayed pretty chill."

"I didn't notice any warm spots developing, even under my shoulders and hips," she added.

The SweetNight CoolNest absorbed the highest amount of heat during our thermal imaging tests, as shown in this graph by the initial sharp spike. However, the CoolNest quickly dissipates heat after the heat's source is removed, earning a lot of points for its rapid cooling rate.

But how cool was it to sleep on night after night? As the lead tester, I used the CoolNest throughout numerous summer heatwaves in a building with no AC (my bedroom temperature often reached 86 °F). But it kept me sleeping cool each time.

Combining our subjective score with our objective score, we can award the SweetNight CoolNest with an overall temperature regulation rating of 4 out of 5. This an excellent temperature regulation score that indicates the bed will keep most sleepers cool. Chronic hot sleepers who experience severe overheating may want to try a cooling bed with best-in-class cooling like the Bear Elite Hybrid.

Pressure relief: 3.7 out of 5

Pressure relief is needed in a mattress to prevent key areas of the body such as shoulders, hips and knees from pressing into a bed and becoming sore. Good pressure relief cushions and supports these areas, evenly distributing weight to prevent any aches.

SweetNight states that the CoolNest is ideal for back and side sleepers — it's designed with zoned support specifically for those sleep positions. While there is no pillow or Euro top for extra cushioning, I did expect the thick foam layers to provide the pressure relief SweetNight claims.

My fellow testers and I agreed that the CoolNest lives up to its promise. Collectively, we agreed that it's best for side and back sleepers, awarding the mattress an objective pressure relief score of 3.5.

As mentioned, I sleep on my back and my side, meaning I was the perfect candidate to lead the CoolNest mattress testing. I found there was enough flexibility in the shoulder area and hip area to prevent numbness when side sleeping, but also enough support for my lower back when back sleeping.

As for a stomach-sleeping Ruth Jones, she found that the mattress was great for side sleeping but not so much for stomach sleeping.

"It's softer than I'd usually go for in a mattress and as a stomach sleeper, it lacked support for my hips and lower back," Jones told me. "However, it was comfortable at the shoulder when side sleeping and I felt generally well supported while back sleeping."

We also performed objective pressure relief tests, placing a 25kg weight at the hip and shoulder areas of the mattress. We measured the indentation depth (ID — how far the weight sank) and recovery time (RT — how long it took for the surface to spring back up after the weight was removed).

The CoolNest had an average ID of 4.19", providing a balance of comfort and support in the "very good" category. As for the RT, it took an average of 2 seconds for the CoolNest's surface to snap back into its original shape, signaling a quick response that makes the CoolNest easy to move around on (which I can corroborate from personal experience). For its great ID and RT scores, we awarded the CoolNest an objective pressure relief score of 4 out of 5.

In comparison, the Siena Memory Foam had a much lower ID of 3.63" (it's a very firm bed) but a quicker RT of 1.75 seconds. That makes it better for stomach sleepers. The Saatva Classic, however, had a best-in-class ID (4.63") and RT of 0.1 seconds — which is why it's our top-rated mattress overall.

Combining subjective and objective feedback, we awarded the SweetNight CoolNest's pressure relief a score of 3.7 out of 5, indicating a "Strong Performance".

Firmness

We rate a mattress's firmness on a standardized scale of one to 10, with 10 being as firm as a plank and 1 being marshmallow soft. Our mattress firmness rating is completely subjective as a variety of factors (such as body weight and primary sleep position) can interfere with your perception of firmness.

To get a well-rounded rating, I asked each member of our diverse testing panel to rank the firmness of the CoolNest on a scale of one to 10. I then created a collective rating based on everyone's feedback.

While SweetNight calls the firmness of the CoolNest "medium", which indicates a score of 5 out of 10 on the standardized scale, I perceived it to be more medium firm (around 6-7 on the scale.)

However, one tester, who is in the 130lbs to 230lbs weight category and prefers firmer mattresses, felt it was softer and gave the bed a 6/10.

Overall, we gave the mattress a collective 6.5 out of 10 firmness rating, designating it a medium-firm bed. The medium-firm rating is considered to be a "Goldilocks" firmness, best for combination sleepers, back sleepers, and most side sleepers.

Motion isolation: 3.5 out of 5

Couples looking for a mattress should always check its motion isolation capabilities, a feature that stops your restless co-sleeper's tossing and turning from traveling to your side of the bed and waking you up.

As the SweetNight CoolNest is made out of dense, slow-moving foam, I had high hopes for its motion isolation — especially compared to hybrid mattresses with springy constructions.

To see if the CoolNest can actually stop motion transfer, we ran two tests: a subjective assessment with testers acting as co-sleepers and a lab-based objective test with a 5kg slam ball and an accelerometer.

In our subjective tests, my fellow testers and I evaluated the impact of each other's movements. One tester, Ruth, was particularly impressed with the CoolNest motion isolation during the subjective tests.

"I could hardly feel Frances getting in and out of bed, even when she was almost jumping onto the mattress," she said. "I'm generally a deep sleeper so it takes a lot to disturb me and I think even a very restless partner wouldn't wake me up on the SweetNight."

In contrast, I'm a light sleeper and can find it hard to fall asleep if there's too much disturbance. However, I found that I only really felt another tester's motion during high-force movements. The light movements were unperceivable to me.

After combining all testers' feedback, I awarded the CoolNest a subjective motion isolation score of 4.25 out of 5, indicating "noticeable but tolerable perceived motion".

For for our objective lab-based tests, we dropped a 5kg slam ball on one side of the CoolNest and measured its impact absorption via an accelerometer on the other. The initial impact average (IIA) was 17.162, which is a disappointingly high figure. It indicates the bed is poor at absorbing the initial "thud" of the slam ball.

In contrast, the Siena had an IIA of 5.527 m/s2, a result consistent with all-foam beds. Another memory foam bed tested, the Nectar Premier, had an IIA of 7.961.

However, the CoolNest made up for this sky-high IIA for its short decay rate. In other words, the IIA was big, but its ripple effect only lasted 1.442 seconds. This decay rate is excellent, especially when you consider that the only one faster belonged to the ultra-dense, firm Siena Signature (1.14 seconds).

Overall, we rate the motion isolation as "Strong", with an overall motion isolation score of 3.5. This means that you might feel the initial movement of your partner getting into bed but the motion will quickly die out. It shouldn't last long enough to be disruptive.

Edge support: 4.5 out of 5

Edge support refers to how sturdy the foot and sides of your mattress are. A mattress with strong edge support will allow you to sleep close to the sides without leaving you unstable. Good edge support also makes sitting on the edge of the mattress and getting in or out of bed easier.

SweetNight claims that the CoolNest has "enhanced edge support", although it doesn't explain which part of the all-foam bed is meant to be responsible for the stronger side. To put this claim to the test, we placed a 25kg weight 3" away from the edge of the mattress and measured how far it sank.

After five minutes, the average indentation of the weight was 4.63", which we rate as "Very good." We measured the sinkage at the sides and foot of the bed to be equal, signaling even support along the perimeter of the bed.

To measure the available sleep space, we also performed a roll-off test. For this, our reviewer lies as close to the edge of the bed as they can get before they start to feel unstable or roll off. The CoolNest has a roll-off distance (ROD) of 0.5" indicating a significant amount of useable sleep space. We awarded the mattress a perfect 5 in this category.

Combing the weight and roll-off test scores, the overall edge support score of the CoolNest is 4.5 out of 5, which we rate as "Excellent". The score also backs up my experience sleeping on the CoolNest, as I've never felt that I'm about to fall out of bed, even when sleeping close to the very edge.

While the CoolNest had a relatively deep compression in both the foot and and sides of the bed, we felt the edge support of the CoolNest was stable in our subjective tests. In comparison to the another memory foam bed tested (the Nectar Premier), there was little difference between the compression at the sides and no difference between compression at the foot. Meanwhile, the firmer feel of the all-foam Siena Signature may be why it exhibited the sturdiest edges.

The SweetNight CoolNest is a crowd-pleasing medium-firm, a feel that will leave most side and back sleepers comfortable and supported. However, stomach sleepers will need something firmer to keep their hips upright.
