It was officially announced during State of Play earlier this week, and now we have a release date: iconic RPG series RuneScape will make its console debut on the PS5 with survival game Dragonwilds on 15th September.
As previously reported, the game will be available day one as part of the PS Plus Extra catalogue, so members will be able to play the game in its entirety as part of their subscription.
While the game has been available in Early Access on PC for some time, this marks the v1.0 release of the title.

The press release reveals:
“RuneScape: Dragonwilds is an open-world, co-op, crafting and survival game, and the first standalone title to join Jagex’s iconic medieval MMORPG franchise, selling over one million copies during its early access period. Players embark solo or in teams of four across Gielinor’s previously unexplored continent of Ashenfall, on an epic quest to discover why untamed, transformative magic spills across the fractured land.
Through the power of magic that flows through the anima-rich landscape, players can not only obtain powerful spells to get them through battles, but find their practical uses as well, as they collect items and craft things to help them throughout their journey. In this land riddled with fierce dragons, players must level up skills, prepare potions, and craft gear, as they carve a path through these ferocious beasts and make their way to the Dragon Queen herself.”
The reception for the aforementioned Early Access release has been generally very positive, so I think this game will be well-received on console. The fact it’s included in PS Plus Extra at launch is, well, a plus.

Awesome!
I love Runescape, and I can’t wait to play this one!
Legitimately can’t wait for this.
I'll definitely be trying it for the survival aspects and the base-building, the visuals look beautiful too they remind me of No Man's Sky. It's definitely not a colour starved palette, it ticks all of the boxes for my kind of game.
@GirlVersusGame I can see where you are getting the no man's sky feel. Personally for me I'm getting a dragon age inquisition/conan exiles vibe. I'm not a huge fan of this graphical style but it's included in my sub so I'll give it a try as I've always heard good things about runescape. Digital too so boz can't snack on this 👍
"iconic rpg" sad clickbaits
@Northern_munkey I was thinking Conan when I saw the desert part and the dragon but I've been trying to erase that biome from my memory. Those hyenas at the start are still to this day one of the most brutal enemies I've faced in any survival game. I don't know when you played it last, or if they were patched but they would lock-on then chase me from one end of the desert to the next. It was like that scene in Blues Brothers where the State police join in with the local police, more and more hyenas. I know so many people who quit before they reached the forests, and mainly because of hyenas. Without masochism there was no finishing that game. There were a lot of funny moments too, but those hyenas wanted to watch the world burn.
@GirlVersusGame I didn't play it too much to be honest but I'll take your word for it. It's a shame when a game has a mechanic in it that destroys any sense of fun for somebody.
@Northern_munkey Oh I enjoyed the difficulty, even went for one hundred percent. It was one of the hardest and most janky survival games I've played and became the kind of foundation for future survival games. I can't think of any other game that really pushed me harder to just live. Finally setting up a base in the forest was a really rewarding experience, the desert was just a brutal hellscape and those hyenas were such an obstacle. The real game began further into the map. I have a real soft spot for that game, it was a first for so many things, the first time I died by having my own base fall on me (structural stability) the first time I was raided by other players, the first time I heard a grown man rage and lose it, the first time I heard a controller hit a wall (then saw the remains) it broke so many people. In the end I was the last of my clan to leave the game, I think we went to Day-Z after that but Conan is full of memories for me, Ark was around the same time.
One thing that will always stand out about Conan was what my friends did when I'd log off, they'd move items and storage around, for weeks. I'd come back on and think 'I could have sworn I put this somewhere else'. Then it escalated to removing parts of a wall, hiding items and I thought another clan had raided us, so we went to war with them and they were as confused as I was. I was convinced they'd been breaking the treaty and taking my things, it's still funny thinking of it now.
Now we just need a remake of EverQuest, Flyff and Warhammer Online.
Yeah this looks great. Not sure I’ve got the time to sink into a game like this though
